[Clinical characteristics of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome: analysis of 82 cases].

This study examined 82 Chinese patients with ME/CFS to understand what symptoms they experience and what might be causing their illness. Researchers found that most patients had memory and attention problems alongside fatigue, many showed signs of anxiety or depression, and some had low levels of a substance called L-carnitine (which helps produce energy) or evidence of a viral infection. When patients took L-carnitine supplements, their levels improved and symptoms got better.

Researchers gave both groups a stressful public speaking task, then exposed their blood samples to a bacterial substance to measure immune response. Unlike healthy controls whose immune response increased after stress, ME/CFS patients showed a decreased immune response, suggesting their bodies may not mobilize infection-fighting chemicals normally during stress.

This study tracked how much physical activity people with ME/CFS could do while following a walking program. Participants wore activity monitors for 4 weeks. They were able to meet their daily walking goals for the first 1-2 weeks, but then their activity levels dropped significantly and symptoms got worse, suggesting they had hit a limit their bodies could not sustain.

JP-8 jet fuel exposure and divided attention test performance in 1991 Gulf War veterans.

This study examined how exposure to low levels of jet fuel affected thinking and attention in Gulf War veterans who were chronically ill. Researchers tested veterans' reaction times on a computer task before and after brief exposures to either jet fuel fumes or clean air, done three times over three weeks. Veterans who were ill and had chemical sensitivities showed faster reaction times after jet fuel exposure, which the researchers suggest might indicate changes in brain chemistry rather than improved thinking.

Increased daily physical activity and fatigue symptoms in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This small study asked 6 people with ME/CFS to increase their daily walking by about 30% for 4 weeks and tracked how they felt. Unlike some previous research suggesting exercise helps, these patients reported that their muscle pain and mood actually got worse with more activity, even though they were able to increase their activity level. The researchers suggest that people with ME/CFS may have a daily limit to how much activity they can do before symptoms worsen.

Prevalence and correlates of nonrestorative sleep complaints.

This study surveyed over 25,000 people across seven European countries to understand how common nonrestorative sleep (feeling unrefreshed after sleep) is and what factors are linked to it. Researchers found that about 1 in 10 people experience nonrestorative sleep, with women and younger adults affected more often. People with this symptom reported worse daytime tiredness and mental fatigue compared to those with other sleep problems.

Chronic fatigue in a population sample: definitions and heterogeneity.

This study looked at how doctors define ME/CFS by surveying over 31,000 Swedish adults about their fatigue symptoms. The researchers found that the current official checklist for diagnosing ME/CFS (requiring 4 out of 8 specific symptoms) doesn't match how fatigue actually varies in real populations. Using statistical analysis, they identified a recognizable ME/CFS-like illness pattern, but concluded that a simpler definition focusing on severe, disabling fatigue might work better.

The definition of disabling fatigue in children and adolescents.

This study looked at how disabling fatigue in children and teens should be defined, since the current definition used for adults might not fit young people well. Researchers found that children with disabling fatigue that didn't quite meet the strict adult criteria still suffered just as much and missed just as much school as those who did meet the strict criteria. The study suggests that doctors should use a broader, less restrictive definition to catch all children who need help.

Prevalence of chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome in Korea: community-based primary care study.

Researchers in Korea asked nearly 1,650 patients visiting primary care clinics about fatigue and checked whether they had chronic fatigue or ME/CFS. They found that about 8% of patients had chronic fatigue, but only 0.6% (less than 1%) had ME/CFS. Most chronic fatigue cases could be explained by physical or psychological causes, while ME/CFS cases had no clear medical explanation.

Gulf War veterans' health: medical evaluation of a U.S. cohort.

This study looked at over 2,000 U.S. veterans from the 1991 Gulf War, comparing those who were deployed to the Persian Gulf with those who were not. Researchers found that deployed veterans had higher rates of chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, skin problems, and stomach issues 10 years after the war. Overall physical health scores were similar between the two groups, but the increased risk of these specific conditions in deployed veterans suggests Gulf War deployment may have lasting health effects.

Chronic fatigue syndrome: exercise performance related to immune dysfunction.

This study looked at whether problems with the immune system might explain why people with ME/CFS feel exhausted after exercise and cannot exercise as much as healthy people. Researchers tested 16 ME/CFS patients' immune cells and had them exercise on a stationary bike while measuring their oxygen use and heart rate. They found that two specific immune markers—elastase and protein kinase R—were linked to reduced exercise capacity, suggesting immune dysfunction may play a role in abnormal exercise responses.

Children and adolescents with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in non-specialist settings: beliefs, functional impairment and psychiatric disturbance.

This study looked at 30 children and teenagers with ME/CFS who were seen in regular medical clinics (not specialist ME/CFS centers) and compared them to 30 young people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Young people with ME/CFS had much higher rates of emotional and psychiatric symptoms, missed far more school, and strongly preferred rest over exercise compared to those with IBD. The study found that children and adolescents with ME/CFS experience significant disability and psychological distress.

The relationships among coping styles and fatigue in an ethnically diverse sample.

This study looked at how people from different ethnic backgrounds (African Americans, Latinos, and European Americans) cope with ME/CFS and chronic fatigue. The study found that different ethnic groups tend to use different coping strategies, and some approaches (like denial) seemed to be less helpful across all groups.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have problems with their body's ability to regulate blood pressure and heart rate when changing positions (like standing up). Researchers compared 58 people with ME/CFS to 55 healthy people using a tilt table test. Surprisingly, they found that both groups had similar rates of these problems, suggesting that this particular type of autonomic dysfunction may not be a primary cause of ME/CFS.

Is chronic fatigue syndrome a connective tissue disorder? A cross-sectional study in adolescents.

Researchers investigated whether ME/CFS is related to loose or stretchy connective tissue (the material that holds joints, skin, and blood vessels together). They compared 32 adolescents with ME/CFS to 167 healthy teenagers and measured joint flexibility, blood pressure, skin stretchiness, and blood vessel stiffness. While they found some differences—including lower blood pressure and stretchier skin in the ME/CFS group—they did not find the joint hypermobility that would be expected if ME/CFS were a connective tissue disorder.

Disturbed adrenal function in adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested how well the adrenal glands (small glands that produce stress hormones) respond to stimulation in adolescents with ME/CFS compared to healthy teens. Researchers found that adolescents with ME/CFS had weaker adrenal responses, producing less of the hormone cortisol and taking longer to reach peak levels. These differences were more noticeable in girls than boys.

This study measured harmful molecules called free radicals in the blood of ME/CFS patients and compared them to healthy people. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients had higher levels of these damaging molecules, and in patients without heart disease risk factors, the amount of free radicals correlated with how severe their symptoms were, particularly fatigue after exertion and joint pain.

Fatigue and regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis in multiple sclerosis.

This study looked at fatigue in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and examined whether their stress hormone system (HPA axis) might be involved. Researchers tested 31 MS patients using three different fatigue questionnaires and a special hormone test. They found that MS patients with severe fatigue had higher levels of a stress hormone called ACTH compared to MS patients without fatigue.

This study used brain imaging to measure a specific receptor (5-HT1A) that helps regulate serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain. Researchers compared 10 ME/CFS patients with 10 healthy people and found that ME/CFS patients had significantly fewer of these receptors, especially in a brain region called the hippocampus (involved in memory and emotion). This suggests that serotonin regulation in the brain may work differently in ME/CFS.
