Chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome: a co-twin control study of functional status.

This study compared twins where one had chronic fatigue or ME/CFS and the other did not. Researchers found that fatigued twins had significantly worse quality of life and daily functioning than their healthy siblings, particularly in physical activities. The more severe the fatigue definition used, the greater the functional impairment observed.

Hemodynamic and neurohumoral responses to head-up tilt in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether ME/CFS patients have problems with blood pressure and heart rate control when standing up or tilting upright. Researchers tested 36 ME/CFS patients and 36 healthy people by tilting them upright for 40 minutes while measuring heart function and stress hormones. About 28% of ME/CFS patients had abnormal responses (like fainting symptoms or rapid heart rate), compared to 17% of healthy controls, though this difference was not statistically significant.

Patients' strategies for coping with psoriasis.

This study looked at how people with psoriasis (a skin condition) cope with their illness by comparing their coping strategies to healthy people and those with other diseases. Researchers found that psoriasis patients most often use acceptance and planning to manage their condition, while least often turning to alcohol, drugs, or denial. Interestingly, people with psoriasis used fewer active coping strategies than healthy controls, but used similar coping approaches to patients with other conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome and cancer.

Blood volume and its relation to peak O(2) consumption and physical activity in patients with chronic fatigue.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS have lower blood volume (the amount of fluid circulating in their bodies) and whether this might explain their exercise problems. Researchers compared 17 ME/CFS patients with 17 healthy controls, measuring blood volume and fitness capacity. They found that ME/CFS patients had significantly reduced exercise capacity and a trend toward lower blood volume, and these two measurements were strongly related to each other.

They found that most websites did not provide balanced or accurate information compared to what scientific research actually shows. Surprisingly, they found no differences in viral markers between the twins with ME/CFS and their healthy siblings.

This study looked at whether a new questionnaire (the SFS-Y) could help identify young people experiencing chronic fatigue by measuring different types of tiredness symptoms. Researchers gave the questionnaire to over 1,100 teenagers and found that the tool was quite good at spotting chronic fatigue, especially when it measured difficulty concentrating. The results suggest this questionnaire might be useful for screening young people who could develop ME/CFS-like conditions.

This suggests that a specific bacterial infection is unlikely to be a primary cause of ME/CFS.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have actual problems with memory and thinking skills, or whether the difficulty they experience is mainly related to depression, anxiety, or fatigue. Researchers compared 23 people with ME/CFS to 23 healthy people using both objective tests (like memory tasks) and subjective reports (how people felt their thinking was affected). The findings showed that on actual cognitive tests, people with ME/CFS performed just as well as healthy controls, though they reported feeling that their thinking was worse.

This study looked at children with severe fatigue and found that some had a specific antibody (anti-Ro/SSA) in their blood that is also found in Sjögren's syndrome, an autoimmune condition affecting moisture-producing glands. Eight children with fatigue syndrome tested positive for this antibody, and two of them showed actual gland damage on biopsy similar to Sjögren's syndrome, suggesting that some fatigue cases may actually be caused by an autoimmune condition affecting the glands.

Both versions showed that people with ME/CFS were significantly slower at thinking tasks involving attention, memory, and focus, confirming that cognitive problems are real and measurable in this illness.

Underlying self-esteem in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS have low self-esteem, using two different types of tests. When asked directly, people with ME/CFS reported lower self-esteem than healthy people and those with other chronic illnesses. However, a special test that measures unconscious reactions suggested their true underlying self-esteem was even lower than what they reported, possibly because they use mental defense mechanisms to protect themselves.

Prognosis of chronic fatigue in a community-based sample.

Researchers followed up with people from a large community study to see which factors predict whether chronic fatigue gets better or worse over time. They found that how severe fatigue was at the start, and especially whether exercise made symptoms worse for 24 hours or more (a symptom called postexertional malaise), were the strongest predictors of whether someone would still have chronic fatigue years later.

Low-dose dexamethasone suppression test in chronic fatigue syndrome and health.

This study looked at how the body's stress-response system (called the HPA axis) works differently in ME/CFS patients compared to healthy people. Researchers measured cortisol levels in saliva at different times of day, and then gave participants a small dose of a steroid medication to see how well the body could shut down cortisol production. They found that ME/CFS patients' cortisol levels dropped much more dramatically and stayed suppressed longer after the medication, suggesting their stress system may be working overtime to control itself.

This study looked for four types of bacteria called Mycoplasma in the blood of 261 ME/CFS patients in Europe and compared them to 36 healthy people. The researchers found that about 69% of ME/CFS patients had at least one type of Mycoplasma bacteria, compared to only 6% of healthy controls. The most common type found was M. hominis, followed by M. pneumoniae and M. fermentans.
