[Utilization of national insurance in connection with functional somatic disorders].

This study looked at how much money Norway's national insurance system spent on people with chronic fatigue syndrome and other similar long-term conditions in the year 2000. Researchers found that these conditions caused about 3% of all sick leave taken by workers and affected about 6% of people newly approved for disability payments. The study shows that these conditions, particularly fibromyalgia, have a significant financial impact on healthcare systems.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have reduced oxygen processing ability compared to healthy people. Researchers had 33 ME/CFS patients and 33 matched healthy controls perform exercise tests on stationary bikes while measuring heart rate and oxygen use. The results showed that ME/CFS patients had normal oxygen uptake capacity similar to sedentary healthy people of the same age and gender, contrary to what some earlier studies had reported.

Researchers created a simple checklist called the FibroFatigue scale to help doctors measure how severe fibromyalgia and ME/CFS symptoms are and track whether treatments are working. The scale includes 12 questions about common symptoms like pain, tiredness, sleep problems, and concentration difficulties. The new tool was tested on 100 women with both conditions and was found to be reliable and accurate.

Immunological variables mediate cognitive dysfunction in gulf war veterans but not civilians with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study compared immune system markers and thinking/memory problems in Gulf War veterans with ME/CFS and civilians with ME/CFS. The researchers found that in Gulf War veterans, certain immune system patterns were connected to cognitive problems like slower reaction times, and these immune changes seemed to affect how well they could function. Interestingly, this same immune-cognition relationship was not found in civilians with ME/CFS, suggesting the two groups may have different underlying causes for their illness.

This study found that women with endometriosis—a painful condition where tissue grows outside the uterus—have much higher rates of ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and autoimmune diseases compared to the general population. Researchers surveyed nearly 3,700 women with endometriosis and compared their health conditions to published data about women without endometriosis. Women with endometriosis were 150 times more likely to have ME/CFS and nearly twice as likely to have fibromyalgia.

Fatigue in chronic migraine patients.

This study looked at fatigue in 63 patients with chronic migraine headaches. The researchers found that most of these patients experienced significant fatigue, and many met the diagnostic criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The study suggests that fatigue and migraines may be connected conditions that should be recognized and treated together.

Prevalence of allergen-specific IgE among patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested 50 ME/CFS patients for allergies by measuring specific immune proteins called allergen-specific IgE in their blood. Contrary to earlier patient surveys suggesting very high allergy rates, only 36% of ME/CFS patients had detectable allergic antibodies to common allergens like dust mites, pollen, and foods. This rate was similar to what researchers find in the general healthy population, suggesting that allergies may not be uniquely associated with ME/CFS.

Fatigue after breast cancer and in chronic fatigue syndrome: similarities and differences.

This study compared 57 women with ME/CFS to 57 women who had breast cancer and were experiencing severe fatigue after treatment. Researchers measured fatigue, physical activity, mood, sleep, and concentration using questionnaires, tests, and activity monitors worn for 12 days. While both groups experienced significant fatigue, ME/CFS patients generally had more severe symptoms overall, though some breast cancer survivors reported similar problems with sleep and concentration.

Chronic fatigue syndrome and arthralgia following parvovirus B19 infection.

This study looked at whether parvovirus B19 infection (a common virus that causes rash and joint pain) can lead to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Researchers followed 51 patients with acute B19 infection and found that some developed lasting joint pain and fatigue months later. Five patients met the diagnostic criteria for CFS after B19 infection, but the study found it very difficult to prove that B19 was the cause without clear evidence of infection at the time fatigue started.

The main worries for ME/CFS and fibromyalgia patients centered on feeling bad about themselves, feeling uncertain, and not being recognized or understood by others.

Researchers measured pupil movements in MS patients and healthy volunteers, then compared these measurements to fatigue severity scores. Surprisingly, they found the opposite of what they expected: people with more pupil instability actually reported less fatigue, not more.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS have lower blood volume (the amount of fluid circulating in their bodies) and whether this might explain their exercise problems. Researchers compared 17 ME/CFS patients with 17 healthy controls, measuring blood volume and fitness capacity. They found that ME/CFS patients had significantly reduced exercise capacity and a trend toward lower blood volume, and these two measurements were strongly related to each other.

This study looked for a specific type of immune protein called antinuclear autoantibodies (ANAs) in people with ME/CFS and Gulf War veterans with multiple symptoms. Researchers compared blood samples from ME/CFS patients, symptomatic Gulf War veterans, and healthy controls. They found no significant differences in ANA levels between any of the groups, and none of the patients had the specific nuclear envelope ANA type that had been suggested as a possible ME/CFS marker.

The prevalence of chronic fatigue syndrome in Iceland - a national comparison by gender drawing on four different criteria.

This study asked over 2,500 Icelanders about symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) to find out how many people have it. Different diagnosis criteria gave very different results—ranging from 0% to 4.9%—showing that how doctors define CFS matters a lot. The study found that women made up most of the people with CFS, and there were some interesting differences between men and women in their symptoms.

Radiophobia: long-term psychological consequences of Chernobyl.

After the Chernobyl nuclear accident, many people experienced psychological distress and developed symptoms like extreme fatigue, sleep problems, mood changes, memory difficulties, and muscle or joint pain. These symptom patterns resembled chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Importantly, these symptoms appeared in people across both highly and minimally contaminated areas and didn't increase with radiation exposure levels, suggesting psychological stress rather than radiation damage caused the illness.

Patients' strategies for coping with psoriasis.

This study looked at how people with psoriasis (a skin condition) cope with their illness by comparing their coping strategies to healthy people and those with other diseases. Researchers found that psoriasis patients most often use acceptance and planning to manage their condition, while least often turning to alcohol, drugs, or denial. Interestingly, people with psoriasis used fewer active coping strategies than healthy controls, but used similar coping approaches to patients with other conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome and cancer.

Researchers tested blood samples from ME/CFS patients and healthy controls for specific antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV), a common virus. They found that 16 ME/CFS patients had unique antibodies to two CMV proteins (p52 and CM2) that were not found in 77 control subjects, including other ME/CFS patients and healthy people. This suggests these antibodies might be a specific marker for a subset of ME/CFS patients and could indicate an ongoing or incomplete CMV infection in this group.

Chronic fatigue in a population-based study of Gulf War veterans.

Researchers studied Gulf War veterans to see how many had chronic fatigue that couldn't be explained by standard medical tests. They found that about 2.2% of veterans met the official criteria for ME/CFS, and another 5.1% had unexplained fatigue. Women veterans were more likely to have these conditions than men. Unlike some other ME/CFS patients, most of these veterans developed their fatigue gradually rather than suddenly.

Chronic fatigue following infection by Coxiella burnetii (Q fever): ten-year follow-up of the 1989 UK outbreak cohort.

This study followed people who were exposed to Q fever (a bacterial infection) during an outbreak in the UK in 1989 and checked on them 10 years later. Compared to people who were never exposed to Q fever, those who had been infected were much more likely to experience ongoing fatigue and to meet criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome. However, the study couldn't determine whether this fatigue was caused by the infection still being present in their bodies or by psychological effects from years of medical follow-up.
