Working memory deficits associated with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested memory and thinking skills in 20 people with ME/CFS and compared them to 20 healthy people. The researchers found that people with ME/CFS performed worse on difficult memory tasks, particularly those requiring quick mental switching and staying focused despite distractions. However, their basic memory storage ability was normal.

Researchers used brain imaging scans to look for differences in blood flow to the brain in people with ME/CFS compared to their identical twins who don't have the disease. They found that the brain scans of people with ME/CFS looked very similar to those of their healthy twins, suggesting that ME/CFS may not cause detectable changes in how blood flows through the brain at rest.

Defensive coping styles in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at how people with ME/CFS cope with stress and worry compared to healthy people and those with other chronic illnesses. Researchers found that people with ME/CFS were more likely to use a coping style where they appear calm and in control on the surface while actually feeling anxious underneath. This study looked at whether childhood abuse (sexual or physical) was more common in adults with ME/CFS compared to healthy people. Researchers surveyed a random sample from the community and found that while abuse history was linked to other types of chronic fatigue conditions, it was actually less common in people diagnosed with ME/CFS specifically. This finding contradicts earlier suggestions that most ME/CFS patients have experienced childhood abuse.

This study looked at whether Gulf War veterans with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) had thinking and memory problems. Researchers compared 32 veterans with CFS to 62 healthy veterans using thinking and memory tests. They found that veterans with CFS did show some cognitive difficulties, even when the researchers accounted for differences in how smart people were before they got sick.

This study looked at brain MRI scans from 48 ME/CFS patients to see if visible abnormalities in the brain were related to how physically impaired they felt. Researchers found that patients whose brain scans showed abnormalities reported being significantly more physically limited than those with normal-looking scans. This suggests ME/CFS may involve real, measurable changes in the brain rather than being purely psychological.

Illness perceptions and mood in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at how ME/CFS patients' beliefs about their illness—such as what they think caused it, whether they can control it, and how long they expect it to last—relate to their mood and fatigue levels. Researchers surveyed 126 ME/CFS patients from a clinic and found that these beliefs were connected to both how tired patients felt and their levels of anxiety and depression, suggesting that what patients think about their illness may influence how much it affects them.

Autoantibodies to a 68/48 kDa protein in chronic fatigue syndrome and primary fibromyalgia: a possible marker for hypersomnia and cognitive disorders.

Researchers tested blood samples from ME/CFS and fibromyalgia patients to look for specific antibodies (immune proteins) that might be unique to these conditions. They found that about 13% of ME/CFS patients and 16% of fibromyalgia patients had antibodies against a protein called 68/48 kDa. Importantly, patients with these antibodies were more likely to experience severe sleep problems, memory issues, and trouble concentrating.

This study compared thinking and attention abilities in people with ME/CFS and healthy controls. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients had specific trouble with divided attention—the ability to focus on two things at once (like listening to someone while reading). However, they performed normally on other cognitive tests like memory and word-finding. This suggests that ME/CFS affects one particular type of thinking rather than overall intelligence.

Hemodynamic instability in chronic fatigue syndrome: indices and diagnostic significance.

This study tested how the body's blood pressure and heart rate respond when patients stand up from lying down (a tilt test). Researchers found that people with ME/CFS have much more unstable cardiovascular responses compared to healthy people and those with other conditions. A mathematical score called the hemodynamic instability score (HIS) could correctly identify ME/CFS patients 97% of the time, suggesting this test might help doctors diagnose the condition.

This study measured a stress hormone called cortisol in the urine of people with ME/CFS and compared it to healthy controls. The researchers found that people with ME/CFS had lower cortisol levels than expected. The study found no significant difference in physical fitness between the two groups, suggesting that poor fitness is not the main reason ME/CFS patients struggle with exercise.

Researchers surveyed over 2,000 Gulf War veterans and conducted detailed medical exams on 443 of them to look for unexplained health symptoms. They found that many veterans experienced overlapping symptoms—including cognitive problems, fatigue, and muscle pain—that resembled conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, but they found few clear physical differences between sick and healthy veterans.

This study followed 35 children and teenagers who developed ME/CFS, checking in with them about 13 years after they first got sick. Most participants (80%) felt they had recovered or were doing reasonably well by the follow-up, though many still had some lingering symptoms. However, about 20% remained significantly ill with ongoing fatigue and activity limitations a decade and a half later.

Psychological adjustment of adolescent girls with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at how 36 teenage girls with ME/CFS were coping emotionally and psychologically. The researchers found that most girls had experienced problems before getting sick, but they generally maintained healthy self-esteem and social skills despite their illness. However, the girls struggled with activities typical for teenagers, like sports and dating, and many kept their emotions bottled up rather than expressing them openly.

This study looked at brain scans from people with ME/CFS to measure the size of fluid-filled spaces (ventricles) in their brains. Researchers found that people with ME/CFS had slightly larger ventricles compared to healthy controls, suggesting there may be subtle physical changes in the brains of some ME/CFS patients. While this difference was close to being statistically significant, it provides another piece of evidence that ME/CFS involves measurable brain changes.

Lack of association between HLA genotype and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested whether certain immune system genes (HLA genes) were more common in ME/CFS patients compared to healthy people. They found no significant differences in HLA genes between the two groups, suggesting that these particular immune genes are not a major cause of ME/CFS.

Health-related quality of life in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome: an international study.

This study measured how ME/CFS affects daily life and well-being in patients from the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany. Researchers found that patients in all three countries experienced very similar impacts on their quality of life—significantly worse than healthy people across most areas measured, including physical function, emotional health, and energy levels. The findings suggest that ME/CFS affects people similarly regardless of where they live.

Fatigue in disease-free cancer patients compared with fatigue in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study compared fatigue in cancer survivors who had finished treatment with fatigue in people with ME/CFS. About one in five cancer survivors (19%) experienced severe fatigue similar to ME/CFS patients, even though they had been cancer-free for at least 6 months. The severely fatigued cancer survivors also reported concentration problems, reduced activity, emotional difficulties, and pain.

Assessment of pentachlorophenol-exposed timber workers using a test-of-poisoning model.

This study looked at 62 former timber workers in New Zealand who were exposed to a toxic chemical called pentachlorophenol (PCP) during their jobs. Researchers found that some workers developed a cluster of symptoms including fever, headaches, breathing problems, and skin issues, while others developed a long-lasting fatigue that started while they were still working. However, the researchers concluded that these fatigue syndromes didn't clearly match what doctors expect from PCP poisoning, and many other factors could have caused the symptoms.
