Cellular immunity in monozygotic twins discordant for chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at immune system differences in identical twins where one twin had ME/CFS and the other didn't. By comparing identical twins, researchers could focus on immune changes related to the illness rather than genetic differences. The study found that certain immune cells were more variable in twins with ME/CFS, suggesting the immune system may be less stable in this condition.

This study followed 79 people with ME/CFS who had been ill for less than 2 years to see what happened over the next year without treatment. About 46% of these patients reported feeling better after one year, which is much higher than the 20% improvement rate seen in people who had been ill for longer. The study found that people who didn't improve tended to have worse concentration problems, fewer social supports, and didn't believe their illness had a physical cause.

Researchers compared immune markers between people with ME/CFS and healthy controls to understand this relationship better. Dry eyes and mouth syndrome--a subgroup of patients presenting with sicca symptoms.

This study looked at 34 patients who had dry eyes and dry mouth symptoms but did not meet the standard criteria for Sjögren's syndrome. These patients had many symptoms on questionnaires but few objective physical findings, and most of them also had features more typical of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome rather than Sjögren's.

Influenza vaccination: is it appropriate in chronic fatigue syndrome?

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS should get the flu vaccine, since many patients worry it might worsen their symptoms or harm their already-altered immune system. Researchers reviewed patient concerns and clinical trial data and found that flu vaccination actually produces protective antibodies in ME/CFS patients without making their symptoms worse, though some patients reported more side effects after the shot (which turned out to overlap with ME/CFS symptoms they already had).

This study looked at depression and anxiety in people with ME/CFS and found two important factors. When doctors didn't believe in or validate patients' illness, patients had higher depression and anxiety. Interestingly, patients who believed that resting and limiting physical activity would help them recover had lower depression and anxiety scores, possibly because they felt more in control of their condition.

Self-reported symptoms and medical conditions among 11,868 Gulf War-era veterans: the Seabee Health Study.

This study surveyed nearly 12,000 Navy Seabees who served around the time of the 1991 Gulf War to understand their health problems. Compared to Seabees who didn't deploy to the Gulf, those who did reported significantly more health issues, including chronic fatigue syndrome, PTSD, chemical sensitivity, and irritable bowel syndrome. Women, reserve members, and certain military units had higher rates of these combined symptoms.

This study compared two types of ME/CFS patients: those whose illness started after an infection and those whose didn't. After multidisciplinary treatment, patients who developed ME/CFS after infection showed better improvement in symptoms and were more likely to return to work. Importantly, a marker of immune function called NK cell activity also showed more improvement in the post-infectious group, suggesting their bodies may respond differently to treatment.

The study explains that while fatigue after infections is common, severe or long-lasting fatigue in teenagers should be evaluated by doctors to find out if there's an underlying cause, and it briefly describes chronic fatigue syndrome using standard diagnostic criteria.

This study tested whether a telephone-based brain function test could accurately detect thinking problems in people with ME/CFS. Researchers compared two versions of the same test—one on a computer and one done by telephone—in 30 people with ME/CFS and 30 healthy people. Both versions showed that people with ME/CFS were significantly slower at thinking tasks involving attention, memory, and focus, confirming that cognitive problems are real and measurable in this illness.

This study found that women with endometriosis—a painful condition where tissue grows outside the uterus—have much higher rates of ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and autoimmune diseases compared to the general population. Researchers surveyed nearly 3,700 women with endometriosis and compared their health conditions to published data about women without endometriosis. Women with endometriosis were 150 times more likely to have ME/CFS and nearly twice as likely to have fibromyalgia.

This study looked at children with severe fatigue and found that some had a specific antibody (anti-Ro/SSA) in their blood that is also found in Sjögren's syndrome, an autoimmune condition affecting moisture-producing glands. Eight children with fatigue syndrome tested positive for this antibody, and two of them showed actual gland damage on biopsy similar to Sjögren's syndrome, suggesting that some fatigue cases may actually be caused by an autoimmune condition affecting the glands.

This study compared how flexible the joints are in children with ME/CFS versus healthy children. Researchers found that children with ME/CFS had much more joint flexibility than healthy children—60% of children with ME/CFS had highly flexible joints compared to only 24% of healthy children. This suggests that joint hypermobility (unusually flexible joints) may be more common in ME/CFS.

A comparison of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome attending separate fatigue clinics based in immunology and psychiatry.

This study compared ME/CFS patients attending two different hospital clinics—one run by immunology doctors and one by psychiatry doctors—to see if they were similar. Researchers found that patients at both clinics had very similar symptoms, disability levels, and emotional distress, even though they chose different clinics. The main difference was that immunology clinic patients were more likely to believe their fatigue was caused by physical problems, while psychiatry clinic patients were more open to other explanations.

Researchers looked at what information about ME/CFS treatments people were finding on the Internet in 2000. They found that most websites did not provide balanced or accurate information compared to what scientific research actually shows. Only a few websites told readers to check the information with their doctor, and many lacked proper author credentials or sources.

This study looked at how oral surgery patients respond to intermaxillary fixation (IMF), a procedure that temporarily wires the jaw shut. Researchers measured stress hormones in urine and found that IMF causes significant stress, leading to irritability and sleep problems. When patients were given an anti-anxiety medication, their stress hormone levels were reduced.

Hemodynamic instability in chronic fatigue syndrome: indices and diagnostic significance.

This study tested how the body's blood pressure and heart rate respond when patients stand up from lying down (a tilt test). Researchers found that people with ME/CFS have much more unstable cardiovascular responses compared to healthy people and those with other conditions. A mathematical score called the hemodynamic instability score (HIS) could correctly identify ME/CFS patients 97% of the time, suggesting this test might help doctors diagnose the condition.

What is chronic fatigue syndrome? Heterogeneity within an international multicentre study.

This study looked at 744 people with chronic fatigue across eight countries to see if they formed different groups based on their symptoms. Researchers found two distinct subgroups: a larger group (68%) with less severe illness and fewer psychiatric issues, and a smaller group (32%) whose symptoms looked more like somatoform illness (where psychological factors strongly influence physical symptoms). Importantly, the proportion of people in each group varied dramatically between countries (6-48%), suggesting that how doctors diagnose and classify ME/CFS is not standardized worldwide.

Lack of association between HLA genotype and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested whether certain immune system genes (HLA genes) were more common in ME/CFS patients compared to healthy people. They studied 58 ME/CFS patients and 134 healthy controls using modern genetic testing methods. They found no significant differences in HLA genes between the two groups, suggesting that these particular immune genes are not a major cause of ME/CFS.

Natural course of symptoms in Cambodia veterans: a follow-up study.

Researchers followed Dutch military veterans who served in Cambodia in 1992-1993 and reported fatigue and memory problems after returning home. At 18 months later, about 39% of veterans reported feeling much better or completely recovered, while 57% still had the same symptoms and 4% felt worse. The study found that veterans who started with less severe fatigue and felt they had more control over their symptoms were more likely to improve.
