This study investigated whether people with ME/CFS have problems with growth hormone (GH), a chemical in the body that affects energy and metabolism. Researchers compared 37 ME/CFS patients to 37 healthy controls by measuring various growth hormone-related substances in their blood and urine, and tested how their bodies responded to specific hormone challenges. They found no significant differences between the two groups, suggesting that ME/CFS is not caused by growth hormone deficiency.

Self-reported sensitivity to chemical exposures in five clinical populations and healthy controls.

This study asked 225 people—including those with ME/CFS, SAD, and other conditions, plus healthy volunteers—to report how sensitive they are to everyday chemical exposures like perfumes, cleaning products, and other odors. People with ME/CFS reported significantly higher chemical sensitivity than healthy controls, and women reported more sensitivity than men. The researchers suggest that chemical sensitivity may be connected to how the body's stress-response system (the HPA axis) functions.

Screening for prolonged fatigue syndromes: validation of the SOFA scale.

This study developed and tested two screening tools (called SOFA/CFS and SOFA/GP) to help doctors identify patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and prolonged fatigue conditions. Researchers tested these tools with 770 CFS patients in specialist clinics and 1,593 people in regular primary care settings, and found that both instruments could reliably spot these fatigue syndromes. The study also showed that fatigue syndromes have distinct patterns that are separate from anxiety and depression, and these patterns remained stable over a 12-month follow-up.

This study looked at fatigue in 277 medical students to see how common chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and a related condition called neurasthenia actually are. The researchers found that while over one-third of students reported fatigue, very few met the strict criteria for CFS (less than 1%), and a small number met criteria for neurasthenia (about 3%). The study also found that students with fatigue were more likely to have depression symptoms, though it's unclear whether depression causes fatigue or results from it.

This study tested whether a synthetic hormone called desmopressin could improve how the pituitary gland responds to stress signals in people with ME/CFS. Researchers gave ME/CFS patients and healthy volunteers different hormone combinations and measured their stress hormone responses. When desmopressin was added to another hormone (CRH), it boosted the pituitary gland's response in both groups, but especially in people with ME/CFS.

Researchers developed a new blood test to detect antibodies against Borna disease virus (BDV), a virus found in animals. They tested thousands of blood samples from people with various conditions, including psychiatric disorders, and found that people with schizophrenia and mood disorders had higher rates of BDV antibodies compared to healthy blood donors. However, people with chronic fatigue syndrome did not show elevated BDV antibodies in this study.

This study compared immune system markers in people with ME/CFS, looking separately at Gulf War veterans and non-veterans. Researchers found that Gulf War veterans with ME/CFS had different immune patterns (more of certain types of T cells, fewer NK cells, and higher levels of inflammation markers) compared to healthy veterans. However, non-veterans with ME/CFS showed no such immune differences from healthy controls, suggesting Gulf War service may have affected the immune system differently than sporadic ME/CFS.

The researchers observed a support group over time to understand what helps patients cope with this serious illness that causes extreme fatigue and reduces ability to work, study, and maintain social activities. They found that a personalized approach combining medical care from a regular doctor and participation in a support group was helpful for disease management.

Cardiovascular response during head-up tilt in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested how the hearts of ME/CFS patients respond to positional changes using a tilt table test, where participants lie flat then are gradually tilted upward for 45 minutes. While ME/CFS patients showed different baseline heart rates and heart pumping patterns compared to healthy controls, the overall frequency of fainting-like responses was similar between the two groups.

Is depression associated with immune activation?

Researchers tested whether depression and ME/CFS are caused by an overactive immune system. They compared immune cell counts and immune signaling molecules in people with depression, people with ME/CFS who later developed depression, and healthy controls. Surprisingly, they found no signs of immune activation in either patient group—instead, the data suggested the immune system was actually downregulated (less active) in people with depression.

Researchers tested blood samples from 91 patients with ME/CFS and/or fibromyalgia who already tested positive for mycoplasma bacteria. They found that most patients carried multiple types of mycoplasma—particularly Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Mycoplasma fermentans—and some patients had two or even three different mycoplasma species at the same time. Patients with multiple infections tended to have been sick longer, suggesting they may have picked up additional infections over time.

Chronic fatigue syndrome and nickel allergy.

This study tested 50 patients with ME/CFS and 73 healthy people for allergic reactions to eight different metals. Researchers found that people with ME/CFS were more likely to be allergic to nickel—36% of ME/CFS patients had nickel allergies compared to only 19% of healthy people. This difference was especially pronounced in women with ME/CFS, where over half (52%) showed nickel allergy. The researchers suggest that nickel exposure might somehow trigger or contribute to ME/CFS in some people.

They compared 37 ME/CFS patients to 38 healthy people using several tests (like standing up quickly, holding their breath, and doing mental math). The study found only minor differences, suggesting that major autonomic problems may not be the primary issue in ME/CFS, though some specific responses to stress were reduced.

Researchers tested whether common viruses (HHV6, HHV7, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus) are more active or present in people with ME/CFS compared to healthy people. They examined blood samples from ME/CFS patients and matched healthy controls, looking for both the viruses themselves and antibodies (immune markers) against these viruses. They found no significant differences between the two groups, suggesting these particular viruses may not be a primary driver of ME/CFS.

Orthostatic intolerance in adolescent chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at how the bodies of adolescents with ME/CFS respond when they stand up or tilt upright. Researchers found that nearly all ME/CFS patients showed significant problems with this response, including rapid heart rate, blood pressure drops, and symptoms like dizziness and fainting. These problems were much more common in ME/CFS patients than in healthy teenagers or those with simple fainting disorders.

Personality dimensions in chronic fatigue syndrome and depression.

This study looked at personality traits in people with ME/CFS, people with depression, and healthy people. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients tended to be less outgoing and more anxious/worried compared to healthy people, but less anxious than those with depression. Interestingly, ME/CFS patients reported they felt less outgoing and more anxious when they were sick compared to when they were well, suggesting illness itself may change how people experience their personality.

Idiopathic chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome: a comparison of two case-definitions.

This study compared how many patients were diagnosed with ME/CFS using two different diagnostic definitions from 1988 and 1994. The researchers found that the 1994 definition diagnosed more patients as having CFS, but these additional patients were less likely to have had a sudden onset of illness or signs suggesting an infectious trigger like fever or sore throat. This suggests the two definitions captured somewhat different groups of people.

Self-reported depression and suicide attempts among U.S. women physicians.

This study surveyed over 4,500 U.S. women doctors to understand how often they experience depression and attempt suicide. The researchers found that about 1 in 5 women physicians have experienced depression at some point in their lives, and about 1.5% have attempted suicide. Several factors increased the risk, including a history of abuse, substance use, chronic fatigue syndrome, and work-related stress.
