Evaluating neuropsychological impairment in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS have problems with thinking, memory, and concentration. Researchers tested patients using standard cognitive tests and also asked them to report their own memory and concentration difficulties. Surprisingly, most patients performed normally on the tests, and there was no clear connection between test results and what patients reported experiencing in daily life.

Serum neopterin and somatization in women with chemical intolerance, depressives, and normals.

This study looked at a marker in the blood called neopterin, which may indicate immune system activation, in women with chemical sensitivity (difficulty tolerating everyday chemicals at low levels), women with depression, and healthy women. The researchers found that neopterin levels themselves were similar across groups, but in women with chemical sensitivity, higher neopterin levels were linked with more physical symptoms—a connection not seen in the other groups.

Impaired associative learning in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have problems with how their brain learns and forms connections between different pieces of information. Researchers measured brain learning using a test where a gentle puff of air is paired with an eye blink stimulus. While ME/CFS patients could hear and feel the stimuli normally, they had difficulty learning to associate the two stimuli together—suggesting their brain's ability to form certain types of connections may be affected.

Lack of seasonal variation of symptoms in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Many people experience changes in energy, mood, appetite, and sleep across different seasons, often feeling worse in winter. This study tested whether ME/CFS patients experience these same seasonal changes. The researchers found that ME/CFS patients actually show much less seasonal variation in their symptoms compared to healthy people, suggesting their fatigue and other symptoms stay relatively constant year-round rather than fluctuating with the seasons.

A population-based incidence study of chronic fatigue.

This study looked at how many people develop chronic fatigue in the general population (rather than just in doctor's offices), and what factors might increase the risk. Researchers found that people who were already somewhat fatigued before the study began were more likely to develop chronic fatigue later on. Interestingly, emotional difficulties and psychiatric conditions appeared less common in ME/CFS patients when researchers carefully adjusted for fatigue itself.

Cognitive performance and complaints of cognitive impairment in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

This study asked people with ME/CFS about memory and concentration problems and then tested them in the lab. While ME/CFS patients reported more trouble concentrating and remembering when reading compared to healthy people, standard lab tests didn't always show measurable differences—except in those with depression. This suggests that cognitive difficulties in ME/CFS may be real but show up more in everyday activities than in controlled lab settings.

The chronic fatigue syndrome and hyperventilation.

This study looked at whether rapid, shallow breathing (hyperventilation) causes ME/CFS or makes it worse. Researchers compared ME/CFS patients with people who hyperventilate but don't have ME/CFS, and healthy people. While ME/CFS patients did show signs of hyperventilation more often than healthy controls, having hyperventilation didn't actually make their fatigue or other symptoms worse.

Generalized anxiety disorder in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study found that people with ME/CFS have much higher rates of anxiety disorders—particularly generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)—compared to people without ME/CFS. The anxiety often started early and frequently occurred alongside other mental health conditions. The researchers suggest that anxiety may be a risk factor that makes someone more vulnerable to developing ME/CFS, rather than simply being caused by the illness itself.

An open study of the efficacy and adverse effects of moclobemide in patients with the chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested whether a medication called moclobemide could help people with ME/CFS. Researchers gave 49 patients the drug for 6 weeks and found small improvements in fatigue, depression, and anxiety. The medication worked better for patients who also had depression, with half of them feeling much better, compared to only about one-fifth of those without depression.

Chronic debilitating fatigue in Irish general practice: a survey of general practitioners' experience.

Irish doctors were surveyed about their experience treating patients with chronic, debilitating fatigue. The study found that fatigue is common in general practice—affecting about 1 in 1,000 people—with twice as many women as men affected. However, doctors used very different approaches to treating these patients and many were unhappy with the care they could provide.

Physical activity in chronic fatigue syndrome: assessment and its role in fatigue.

This study looked at how active people with ME/CFS actually are compared to healthy people and patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Researchers used three different methods to measure activity: questionnaires, daily logs, and a wearable device. They found that ME/CFS patients were less active than healthy people, similar to MS patients, but ME/CFS patients were more likely to avoid activities they feared would make their fatigue worse.

Does the chronic fatigue syndrome involve the autonomic nervous system?

This study tested whether ME/CFS patients have problems with their autonomic nervous system—the part of the nervous system that controls automatic functions like heart rate and blood pressure. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients had abnormal heart rate and blood pressure responses during standing and tilting tests, and their nervous system wasn't regulating these responses properly. The findings suggest that either deconditioning from reduced activity, a viral infection damaging the nervous system, or both could explain why many ME/CFS patients feel dizzy or faint when standing up.

Researchers tested whether two viruses—Borna disease virus (BDV) and HTLV-1—might be linked to psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and depression in Japanese patients. After testing blood samples from 346 patients with psychiatric conditions and 70 healthy people, they found almost no evidence that either virus was associated with these mental health conditions.

Fatiguing illness among employees in three large state office buildings, California, 1993: was there an outbreak?

Researchers surveyed over 3,300 state office workers in California to see if there was an unusual outbreak of long-lasting fatigue or ME/CFS-like illness. They found that about 18% of workers reported fatigue lasting at least a month, but this rate was similar in buildings thought to have clusters and in a comparison building, suggesting there was no outbreak. The study identified that certain groups—including women, Hispanic workers, Native American workers, and those with lower income or education—were more likely to report fatigue.

Somatomedin C (insulin-like growth factor I) levels in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers measured levels of somatomedin C (a growth-related hormone) in 49 ME/CFS patients and compared them to 30 healthy people. They found that ME/CFS patients had higher levels of this hormone than healthy controls. This is interesting because a similar condition called fibromyalgia shows the opposite pattern—lower levels of this hormone.

Comparison of heart rate variability in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and controls.

Researchers tested whether ME/CFS patients have problems with their autonomic nervous system (the system that automatically controls heart rate, blood pressure, and other vital functions). They measured heart rate variability—natural variations in heart rate—in ME/CFS patients and healthy controls while lying down and standing up. They found that the heart rate patterns were similar between the two groups both at rest and when standing, suggesting that basic autonomic function may not be obviously different in ME/CFS.

This study tested how well people with ME/CFS could think and concentrate compared to people with depression, acute infections, and healthy people. All three patient groups performed worse on attention and memory tests and reported feeling more tired than healthy controls. Importantly, people with ME/CFS and acute infection had less severe mood problems than those with depression, suggesting their cognitive difficulties aren't simply caused by depression.

This study examined whether ME/CFS might be caused by an infection or involve immune system problems. While researchers didn't find a specific virus or bacteria responsible for the illness, they discovered that when they grouped patients based on whether their symptoms started suddenly or gradually, some differences in immune markers appeared between patients and healthy people.

[Prevalence of chronic fatigue syndrome in 4 family practices in Leiden].

Researchers in the Netherlands looked at how many people in general medical practices had chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). They reviewed medical records from about 23,000 patients and found that at least 1-2 out of every 1,000 patients had CFS. Interestingly, they noticed that women were diagnosed with CFS about five times more often than men.
