Illness behaviour of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study asked 40 patients with ME/CFS to complete questionnaires about their health concerns and mood. Compared to people visiting general doctors, ME/CFS patients reported more worry about their health and stronger belief that they had a serious illness. However, they were less likely to think their symptoms were purely psychological. About two-thirds of the ME/CFS patients also showed signs of depression or anxiety on screening tests.

Immunologic abnormalities associated with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study examined immune cells in the blood of ME/CFS patients and compared them to healthy people. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients had normal numbers of immune cells overall, but the cells showed signs of being overactive and tired. Most notably, patients had significantly reduced natural killer cell activity—these are immune cells that normally help fight infections and abnormal cells.

Using heart rate recordings, researchers found that fatigue patients showed an imbalance in their autonomic nervous system—specifically, the part that triggers the "fight or flight" response was overactive while the calming part was underactive, even at rest.

Sleep disorders in patients with chronic fatigue.

This study looked at sleep problems in 59 people with chronic fatigue, most of whom had ME/CFS. Researchers found that 81% had at least one sleep disorder—most commonly sleep apnea—that might be treatable. Importantly, these sleep problems occurred whether or not people met the full criteria for ME/CFS, suggesting they are a separate issue worth investigating and treating.

This study reviewed 12 documented outbreaks of ME/CFS-like illness from 1934 to the 1980s to understand how symptoms varied between them. While all outbreaks shared common features like extreme fatigue, muscle pain, and headaches, the neurological symptoms (affecting the nervous system) differed significantly. The researchers found that older outbreaks (1930s-1950s) showed more severe objective nerve damage, while later outbreaks (1960s-1980s) had milder neurological findings, possibly because doctors weren't looking for these symptoms as carefully.

Researchers found that many patients in their ME/CFS clinic had signs of this Sjögren's-like illness, including abnormal tests and certain antibodies in their blood. The study suggests these two conditions may overlap more often than doctors realize.

This study looked at whether a common virus called parvovirus B19 might be responsible for fibromyalgia, a condition similar to ME/CFS that causes widespread pain and fatigue. Researchers compared blood antibodies (which show past infection) in 52 fibromyalgia patients versus 39 healthy people. They found slightly higher rates of past parvovirus infection in fibromyalgia patients, but the difference was too small to be meaningful, so they concluded the virus is probably not the cause of fibromyalgia.

Enteroviruses and the chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers investigated whether a common virus called enterovirus might be causing ME/CFS by hiding in the body. They tested 76 ME/CFS patients and 76 healthy controls using multiple methods, including blood tests, stool samples, and genetic analysis. The study found no evidence that enterovirus plays a role in ME/CFS—only one patient showed traces of the virus in one test, which disappeared three months later.

They found that most ME/CFS patients had elevated antibodies to at least one virus, but the pattern didn't suggest a generalized immune overreaction affecting all viruses equally.

They found that while some people initially thought to have ME/CFS actually had other conditions (like a rare enzyme deficiency or inflammation), the muscle changes in alcohol misuse were quite distinct and recognizable through muscle biopsies.

This study followed 87 patients who had a persistent low-grade fever (99-101°F) along with fatigue, muscle pain, and joint pain. Doctors ran many tests looking for infections, autoimmune diseases, or cancer, but found nothing abnormal. Most patients gradually improved over time, with about half becoming symptom-free within three years. The researchers suggest this condition might be related to ME/CFS.

Researchers found that ME/CFS affects people in nine different ways: mood and emotional health, ability to do daily activities, sleep quality, physical avoidance, thinking and memory problems, beliefs about what caused their illness, relationships and social life, confidence in their own abilities, and overall life satisfaction. Understanding these separate aspects could help doctors better assess and treat ME/CFS in individual patients.

Researchers found that people with all three conditions experienced much higher levels of fatigue than healthy people, and those with ME/CFS and MS also had greater difficulty doing everyday activities. The study highlights how serious and disabling fatigue can be across these different conditions.

Researchers found that about 30% of children with CFS met the criteria for fibromyalgia, and these children experienced more muscle pain, sleep problems, and neurological symptoms than those without fibromyalgia. The study suggests that CFS and fibromyalgia in children may be closely related or even the same condition.

Researchers tested blood samples from 13 ME/CFS patients and 13 healthy people to see if they carried human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), a common virus that most people encounter in childhood. They found that over half of the ME/CFS patients had active HHV-6 in their blood, while none of the healthy controls did. The patients also had higher antibody levels, suggesting their immune systems were actively fighting the virus.

Researchers used a type of brain imaging called SPECT scans to compare brain blood flow patterns in people with ME/CFS, AIDS-related dementia, depression, and healthy people. People with ME/CFS and AIDS dementia showed similar patterns of reduced blood flow in certain brain areas, while people with depression showed different patterns. These findings suggest ME/CFS may involve brain inflammation similar to a chronic viral infection rather than being purely psychological.

Single fibre EMG studies in chronic fatigue syndrome: a reappraisal.

Researchers used a specialized test called single fibre EMG to examine how well the muscles and nerves work together in people with ME/CFS. They tested 30 patients with ME/CFS and compared them to 30 healthy controls. While they found some minor differences, the differences were so small that the researchers concluded problems with nerve-muscle communication are unlikely to be a main cause of ME/CFS.
