Concurrent sick building syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome: epidemic neuromyasthenia revisited.

This study looked at three groups of people in different buildings who reported feeling sick, and found that some developed symptoms beyond what's typically expected from poor indoor air quality. While many had the usual complaints like respiratory irritation and headaches from their building environments, others developed more serious symptoms like extreme fatigue and neurological problems that match ME/CFS. The researchers concluded that ME/CFS may often occur alongside or be connected to sick building syndrome.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have low magnesium levels, since some people believed magnesium supplements might help with fatigue. Researchers measured magnesium in red blood cells from 89 ME/CFS patients and compared them to healthy people, then did additional tests on six patients. They found no difference in magnesium levels between the two groups.

This study compared immune system markers in 21 people with ME/CFS to 21 healthy people matched by age and sex. Researchers found that certain immune cells in ME/CFS patients produced higher levels of specific immune signaling molecules, while antibody levels were slightly lower than normal. Overall, the study did not find clear evidence that ME/CFS is caused by a persistent viral infection or a severely damaged immune system.

This study looked at whether people with multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) have psychiatric issues or thinking problems. Researchers found that both groups reported more psychiatric diagnoses than healthy people, and both groups tended to report physical symptoms rather than emotional ones. Surprisingly, the study did not find significant cognitive impairment in MCS patients, except for a small difference in visual memory.

Cognitive functioning in chronic fatigue syndrome and depression: a preliminary comparison.

Researchers tested thinking and memory skills in 16 people with ME/CFS and 23 people with depression using a brief set of mental tests. Both groups performed similarly to each other and scored in the normal range on most tests. Interestingly, people with ME/CFS reported more cognitive problems than their test scores showed, which the researchers suggest might be due to increased attention to physical sensations rather than actual cognitive damage.

Gender differences in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether ME/CFS affects men and women differently by comparing 348 patients seen at a specialized clinic. While women more often had swollen lymph nodes and fibromyalgia alongside ME/CFS, and men more often had sore throats, the researchers found that overall, men and women with ME/CFS are quite similar in most ways, including their symptoms, psychological well-being, and how the illness affects their daily functioning.

Primary juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome in adolescents.

This study looked at whether children diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) also had fibromyalgia, a condition involving widespread muscle pain and tender points. Researchers found that about 30% of children with CFS met the criteria for fibromyalgia, and these children experienced more muscle pain, sleep problems, and neurological symptoms than those without fibromyalgia. The study suggests that CFS and fibromyalgia in children may be closely related or even the same condition.

Sleep disorders in patients with chronic fatigue.

This study looked at sleep problems in 59 people with chronic fatigue, most of whom had ME/CFS. Researchers found that 81% had at least one sleep disorder—most commonly sleep apnea—that might be treatable. Importantly, these sleep problems occurred whether or not people met the full criteria for ME/CFS, suggesting they are a separate issue worth investigating and treating.

Psychosocial factors and chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether psychological and social factors differ between people with ME/CFS, people with irritable bowel syndrome, and healthy people without these conditions. Researchers examined life stressors, personality traits, how people cope with stress, and their social support systems. They found that while stressful life events were similar across groups, differences appeared in how people handled stress and their personality patterns.

Lack of evidence for infection with known human and animal retroviruses in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested blood samples from 21 ME/CFS patients and 21 healthy control volunteers to see if several types of retroviruses (viruses that can insert themselves into human DNA) might cause ME/CFS. They looked for eight different retroviruses using sensitive laboratory tests. None of the viruses were found in either patients or controls, suggesting these particular viruses are not responsible for ME/CFS in this group.

A potential role for human herpesvirus type 6 in nervous system disease.

This study looked for evidence that human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6), a common virus, might be involved in nervous system diseases including ME/CFS. Researchers tested blood and spinal fluid samples from patients with different neurological conditions and compared them to healthy controls. They found that a small number of multiple sclerosis patients had HHV-6 DNA in their spinal fluid, and MS patients had higher antibodies to HHV-6 in their blood, suggesting the virus may play a role in that disease.

This study compared 90 patients with three conditions that cause fatigue and other symptoms: ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and multiple chemical sensitivities. The researchers found that these three conditions are very similar in many ways—patients often report overlapping symptoms, and many people meet the criteria for more than one condition. All three groups used a lot of healthcare services, visiting doctors about 22-40 times per year on average.

This study looked at whether people diagnosed with ME/CFS might actually have a condition similar to Sjögren's syndrome, a disease that causes dry mouth and eyes along with immune system problems. Researchers found that many patients in their ME/CFS clinic had signs of this Sjögren's-like illness, including abnormal tests and certain antibodies in their blood. The study suggests these two conditions may overlap more often than doctors realize.

This study reviewed 12 documented outbreaks of ME/CFS-like illness from 1934 to the 1980s to understand how symptoms varied between them. While all outbreaks shared common features like extreme fatigue, muscle pain, and headaches, the neurological symptoms (affecting the nervous system) differed significantly. The researchers found that older outbreaks (1930s-1950s) showed more severe objective nerve damage, while later outbreaks (1960s-1980s) had milder neurological findings, possibly because doctors weren't looking for these symptoms as carefully.

[Epidemiologic study of chronic fatigue in primary care (general practice)].

Researchers studied fatigue in patients visiting regular doctors' offices to understand how common it is and what causes it. They found that some patients had long-lasting, disabling fatigue, but these patients were very different from each other in why they thought they were tired. Most of these patients also had depression or other mental health conditions alongside their fatigue.

This study asked 40 patients with ME/CFS to complete questionnaires about their health concerns and mood. Compared to people visiting general doctors, ME/CFS patients reported more worry about their health and stronger belief that they had a serious illness. However, they were less likely to think their symptoms were purely psychological. About two-thirds of the ME/CFS patients also showed signs of depression or anxiety on screening tests.

This study compared immune system function and psychological stress levels in three groups: healthy people, those with chronic fatigue (but not ME/CFS), and patients with ME/CFS. All three groups showed differences in how stressed they felt, their activity levels, and how well their immune cells (specifically natural killer cells) worked. Importantly, the chronic fatigue group fell somewhere between healthy people and ME/CFS patients in terms of both psychological stress and immune function.

Dimensional assessment of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study asked 298 people with ME/CFS to fill out detailed questionnaires about how the illness affected them. Researchers found that ME/CFS affects people in nine different ways: mood and emotional health, ability to do daily activities, sleep quality, physical avoidance, thinking and memory problems, beliefs about what caused their illness, relationships and social life, confidence in their own abilities, and overall life satisfaction. Understanding these separate aspects could help doctors better assess and treat ME/CFS in individual patients.

[Viral infection and fibromyalgia].

This study looked at whether a common virus called parvovirus B19 might be responsible for fibromyalgia, a condition similar to ME/CFS that causes widespread pain and fatigue. Researchers compared blood antibodies (which show past infection) in 52 fibromyalgia patients versus 39 healthy people. They found slightly higher rates of past parvovirus infection in fibromyalgia patients, but the difference was too small to be meaningful, so they concluded the virus is probably not the cause of fibromyalgia.

This study compared fatigue in people with three different chronic illnesses: postpolio syndrome, ME/CFS, and multiple sclerosis. Researchers found that people with all three conditions experienced much higher levels of fatigue than healthy people, and those with ME/CFS and MS also had greater difficulty doing everyday activities. The study highlights how serious and disabling fatigue can be across these different conditions.
