Lowered serum cesium levels in schizophrenia: association with immune-inflammatory biomarkers and cognitive impairments.

This study looked at a mineral called cesium in the blood of people with schizophrenia and compared it to healthy people. They found that people with schizophrenia had lower cesium levels, and this was connected to cognitive problems (like memory and thinking difficulties), fatigue symptoms, and signs of immune system activity. The researchers suggest that low cesium might contribute to some of the symptoms seen in schizophrenia.

Exploring anhedonia in adolescents with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): A mixed-methods study.

This study looked at whether teenagers with ME/CFS lose the ability to enjoy activities they once loved. Researchers surveyed 164 young people and found that 42% experienced some loss of enjoyment, with 15% experiencing significant loss. Many of these teenagers said their condition either stopped them from doing activities or made it hard to enjoy them, even when they did participate.

The Epidemiology of Insomnia and Sleep Duration Across Mental and Physical Health: The SHoT Study.

This study looked at sleep problems in over 50,000 Norwegian college students and found that insomnia (difficulty sleeping) is much more common in people with both mental and physical health conditions. Students with ME/CFS had particularly high rates of insomnia—about 65% of women and an unspecified percentage of men experienced insomnia when they also had ME/CFS. The study also found that people with these conditions slept shorter amounts overall.

Chronic fatigue syndrome: an emerging sequela in COVID-19 survivors?

Some people who recover from COVID-19 continue to experience symptoms that look very similar to ME/CFS, including severe tiredness, pain, and difficulty thinking clearly. This study found that about 27% of COVID-19 survivors had these ME/CFS-like symptoms, and they reported worse sleep, more fatigue, and more difficulty with basic activities compared to those who recovered normally. The researchers measured markers of nerve damage and inflammation to understand what might be causing these symptoms.

Analysis of Gender Differences in HRV of Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Using Mobile-Health Technology.

Researchers used a smartphone app connected to a heart monitor to measure heart rate variability (how much the time between heartbeats varies) in ME/CFS patients and healthy people. They found that women with ME/CFS showed different heart patterns than healthy women, but men with ME/CFS did not show the same clear difference. This suggests that ME/CFS may affect the heart's nervous system control differently in men versus women.

Evaluation of Immune Dysregulation in an Austrian Patient Cohort Suffering from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The researchers tested 116 ME/CFS patients for antibodies that target receptors controlling blood vessel function and other vital processes. They found that patients whose ME/CFS started after an infection had stronger connections between these antibodies and key symptoms like fatigue and muscle pain, suggesting these antibodies might play a role in how the disease develops.

Researchers tracked what 50 ME/CFS patients experienced throughout their day—their thoughts, activities, and mood—five times daily using phones and activity monitors. They found that two main patterns seemed connected to fatigue: feeling psychologically uncomfortable and how much patients were moving around. However, these patterns looked different for each person, and knowing about them didn't clearly predict who would improve with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

Sarcoidosis among US Hispanics in a Nationwide Registry.

This study looked at how sarcoidosis (a disease that causes inflammation in the body) affects Hispanic patients in the United States compared to non-Hispanic patients. Researchers surveyed nearly 3,835 people and found that Hispanic patients with sarcoidosis experience more depression, chronic pain, sleep problems, and job loss than non-Hispanic patients. The findings suggest that doctors may need to approach treatment differently for Hispanic patients with this condition.

This study tested saliva samples from people with ME/CFS and healthy people to measure levels of common viruses that stay dormant in the body. Researchers found that two viruses (HHV-6B and HHV-7) were present at higher levels in people with ME/CFS, especially in those whose viral levels went up and down over time. Importantly, when these viral levels were higher, patients reported worse symptoms like pain, brain fog, and heart/blood pressure problems.

This study tested whether ME/CFS and fibromyalgia involve a condition called 'central sensitisation,' where the nervous system becomes overly sensitive to pain signals. Researchers compared pain sensitivity in 19 ME/CFS patients, 19 fibromyalgia patients, and 20 healthy people using physical tests. They found that 84% of ME/CFS patients and 95% of fibromyalgia patients showed signs of central sensitisation, while none of the healthy controls did.

Researchers found that about 1 in 7 sarcoidosis patients reported having an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), and these patients were more likely to experience fatigue, depression, sleep problems, and difficulty with physical activities. The study suggests that checking for thyroid problems might help doctors better manage sarcoidosis symptoms.

They found that ME/CFS has a serious impact on income and quality of life across all three countries, and that graded exercise therapy (a treatment commonly used in the UK) did not work for patients. The study also revealed differences in how doctors diagnose and treat ME/CFS depending on which country people live in.

Effectiveness of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy (Fatigue in Teenagers on the Internet) for Adolescents With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Routine Clinical Care: Observational Study.

This study tested whether an internet-based therapy program called FITNET, delivered through routine clinical care, works as well as it did in earlier controlled research. The program helps teenagers with ME/CFS through structured cognitive behavioral therapy done online. Results showed that teenagers improved significantly with similar outcomes to the original research study, and very few got worse during treatment.

This survey asked 146 Belarusian doctors how they treat thyroid problems. Most doctors use levothyroxine (LT4) as the first treatment for low thyroid function. Some doctors said they might add a second thyroid hormone (LT3) for patients who keep feeling tired and unwell even after their blood tests show normal thyroid levels. The doctors noted that when patients have normal thyroid tests but ongoing symptoms, the cause is often stress, other health problems, or unrealistic expectations rather than actual thyroid disease.

Accurate and objective determination of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome disease severity with a wearable sensor.

Researchers developed a wearable sensor that measures how much time ME/CFS patients spend standing or walking each day (called UpTime). In a small study of 15 people, they found that severely ill ME/CFS patients spend less than 20% of their day upright, moderately ill patients spend 20-30%, while healthy people spend more than 30%. This sensor measurement was more accurate than asking patients to estimate their activity themselves, suggesting it could be a reliable way to track disease severity and test new treatments.

Chronic Pain Syndromes and Their Laryngeal Manifestations.

This study looked at whether fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and ME/CFS patients have similar voice and throat problems. Researchers reviewed medical records of over 4,000 patients at a voice center and found that patients with these three conditions were more likely to have functional voice disorders (problems with how the voice works rather than visible damage) compared to other patients.

Longitudinal outcomes associated with significant other responses to chronic fatigue and pain.

This study followed 68 people with chronic fatigue (some also with fibromyalgia) for 18 months to see how their loved ones' responses affected their health outcomes. The researchers found that when significant others responded negatively to fatigue and pain, patients experienced more pain, worse mental health, and worse fatigue symptoms over time. Interestingly, when loved ones were more helpful and comforting (solicitous), patients with more fibromyalgia tender points tended to have this response, and when loved ones helped distract patients, mental health was better.
