Attentional Processing and Interpretative Bias in Functional Neurological Disorder.

This study looked at how people with ME/CFS and a related condition called functional neurological disorder (FND) process information and interpret bodily sensations differently than healthy people. Researchers gave participants three types of tests: one measuring whether they automatically notice illness-related information, another testing how well they can control their attention, and a third examining whether they interpret unclear bodily sensations as signs of illness. The findings suggest that both ME/CFS and FND involve similar difficulties with attention control and a tendency to interpret bodily sensations as illness-related.

This study followed 68 people with chronic fatigue (some also with fibromyalgia) for 18 months to see how their loved ones' responses affected their health outcomes. The researchers found that when significant others responded negatively to fatigue and pain, patients experienced more pain, worse mental health, and worse fatigue symptoms over time. Interestingly, when loved ones were more helpful and comforting (solicitous), patients with more fibromyalgia tender points tended to have this response, and when loved ones helped distract patients, mental health was better.

Joint Assessment of Equilibrium and Neuromotor Function: A Validation Study in Patients with Fibromyalgia.

Researchers created and tested a new 20-question tool to measure balance problems and nerve-muscle coordination in people with fibromyalgia. The tool was tested on 62 fibromyalgia patients, 22 older adults, and 24 healthy people. The results show the tool works well at identifying balance issues in fibromyalgia patients, especially problems related to head movements.

This study found that people with ME/CFS experience significant problems with memory and thinking speed after their body has been stressed by a tilt test (a medical test that checks how the body handles position changes). Specifically, when tested right after the tilt procedure, patients made more mistakes on memory tasks and responded much more slowly compared to before the test. This suggests that the physical stress of orthostatic intolerance directly worsens cognitive problems in ME/CFS.

Researchers measured breathing rates in 216 ME/CFS patients over two days and compared them to information about PEM and other symptoms. They found that patients with more severe PEM tended to have faster resting breathing rates, while depression, anxiety, and activity level did not explain the faster breathing.

They found that ME/CFS patients had significantly higher rates of active EBV infection in their bloodstream compared to healthy people, though most people in both groups carried these viruses in a dormant state. This suggests that for some patients, active EBV infection may play a role in ME/CFS development.

Researchers tested whether a standard exercise test (cardiopulmonary exercise test, or CPET) could reliably measure how ME/CFS affects the body's ability to exercise. They had 51 women with ME/CFS and 10 healthy women do the same exercise test twice, 24 hours apart. The results showed that the measurements were consistent and clearly different between the two groups, suggesting that CPET could be a useful tool for assessing ME/CFS.

The researchers tested whether cognitive behavioral therapy (a type of talking therapy) could help reduce health anxiety in ME/CFS patients, and found it produced meaningful improvements.

The digestive problems remained worse in the POTS group even after accounting for other conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested blood samples from Gulf War veterans with Gulf War Illness (GWI) and compared them to healthy veterans and people with ME/CFS or irritable bowel syndrome. They found that GWI veterans had higher levels of autoantibodies—proteins the immune system makes that mistakenly attack the brain and nervous system—compared to all three control groups. This suggests that a blood test measuring these autoantibodies could potentially help doctors diagnose Gulf War Illness objectively.

Researchers tested whether cyclophosphamide, a chemotherapy drug, could help people with ME/CFS based on observations that some patients improved after cancer treatment. Forty patients received six infusions of this drug over six months, with check-ins lasting up to four years. More than half the patients reported meaningful improvements in fatigue and physical activity, with many staying better even years later.
