Musculoskeletal Pain in Individuals With Inflammatory Bowel Disease Reflects Three Distinct Profiles.

Most people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience muscle and joint pain, but the pain works differently in different people. This study found three distinct groups: one with mixed types of pain, one with pain driven by nervous system sensitivity, and one with pain in specific areas that improves when the IBD is under control. The group with nervous system-driven pain had higher rates of depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at mitochondrial DNA (the genetic material in the energy-producing parts of our cells) in people with ME/CFS to see if differences in this DNA might help explain the condition. Researchers compared DNA samples from ME/CFS patients in the UK and South Africa to look for variations. Interestingly, they found that ME/CFS patients were less likely to have certain common genetic variations that most people carry, but they did not find any confirmed disease-causing mutations.

Researchers studied blood immune cells from 10 ME/CFS patients and 10 healthy people to understand what's different at the genetic level. They found that several genes related to inflammation were more active in ME/CFS patients, and genes related to energy production and circadian rhythms (your body's internal clock) showed abnormal patterns. These findings suggest ME/CFS involves multiple biological systems working incorrectly at the same time.

[Fatigue among working and non-working students: a sociological analysis of the environmental determinants of its level].

Interestingly, non-working students reported significantly more fatigue than working students. This study looked at dizziness and lightheadedness symptoms in ME/CFS patients when lying down versus standing up. Researchers found that these symptoms were very common in ME/CFS (occurring in 72% of patients when standing) and that they often happened even while lying down—something doctors don't usually check for. Importantly, these symptoms weren't simply caused by a rapid heart rate, suggesting a different mechanism is at play in ME/CFS.

This study examined 313 patients with unexplained exercise intolerance using specialized heart and lung testing. Researchers found that about 12.5% of these patients have trouble exercising because their muscles cannot extract and use oxygen properly from the bloodstream, rather than having heart or lung problems. In these patients, the blood remained less acidic during exercise and had higher oxygen levels than expected, suggesting the muscles simply weren't using the available oxygen efficiently.

A new approach to find biomarkers in chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) by single-cell Raman micro-spectroscopy.

Researchers used a new scanning technology called Raman spectroscopy to look at individual cells from ME/CFS patients and healthy people. They found that cells from ME/CFS patients had higher levels of a protein building block called phenylalanine, similar to cells with broken energy-producing structures (mitochondria). Using computer learning, they could identify ME/CFS patient cells with 98% accuracy based on this signature.

Assessing chronic fatigue syndrome: Self-reported physical functioning and correlations with physical testing.

This study tested whether two simple physical tests could help diagnose ME/CFS and match how tired patients feel. Researchers had 27 women with ME/CFS do a standing endurance test and a balance-while-thinking test, then compared the results to questionnaires about fatigue and daily functioning. Only the standing test correlated with how patients rated their physical abilities.

Adolescent and parent factors related to fatigue in paediatric multiple sclerosis and chronic fatigue syndrome: A comparative study.

This study compared teenagers with multiple sclerosis (MS) who experienced fatigue, teenagers with ME/CFS, and healthy teenagers to understand what factors contribute to severe fatigue. Researchers found that teenagers with MS who were fatigued and teenagers with ME/CFS had very similar patterns of fatigue and unhelpful thinking patterns about their symptoms, but teenagers with ME/CFS had normal brain function while those with MS had some cognitive difficulties. The study suggests that psychological approaches used successfully in ME/CFS might also help teenagers with MS who experience fatigue.

A logistic regression analysis of risk factors in ME/CFS pathogenesis.

This study looked at what factors might increase someone's risk of developing ME/CFS by comparing 269 people with ME/CFS to people with multiple sclerosis and healthy controls. Researchers found that having frequent colds or infections before illness onset, being single, having lower income, and having a family history of anxiety or neurological illness were linked to higher ME/CFS risk. The study suggests that infections may play an important role in how ME/CFS develops, which differs from multiple sclerosis.

This study measured a protein called GDF15 in the blood of ME/CFS patients and compared it to healthy people. GDF15 is released by cells when they are stressed or damaged. The researchers found that patients with severe ME/CFS had higher levels of GDF15 than healthy controls, and the levels of this protein were linked to how tired patients felt. The GDF15 levels stayed relatively stable over several months, suggesting it could be a useful marker for measuring cellular stress in ME/CFS.

This study followed 511 ME/CFS patients for up to 10 years after they completed cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to see which factors predicted who would recover better long-term. Researchers found that patients who started with less severe fatigue, had symptoms for a shorter time before treatment, and felt more in control of their fatigue tended to have better outcomes years later. The study suggests that maximizing improvements during treatment and addressing pain may be important for lasting recovery.

This study surveyed 150 people with ME/CFS about how their illness started and changed over time. Most people reported their ME/CFS began after an infection, stress, or chemical exposure. While some symptoms like fatigue and flu-like feelings improved slightly over time, others like brain fog stayed about the same or got worse, and nearly half of participants couldn't work by the time of the study.

Epidemiology of paediatric chronic fatigue syndrome in Australia.

This study looked at how many Australian children develop ME/CFS and what their experiences are like. Researchers tracked newly diagnosed cases over one year and found that the condition is quite rare in children under 10, but becomes more common in teenagers. Interestingly, the rates were very different depending on where children lived in Australia, suggesting some areas may be better at recognizing and diagnosing the condition than others.

This study examined the immune system of ME/CFS patients by testing their blood for signs of infection and measuring different types of immune cells. Researchers compared 251 ME/CFS patients (including 54 with severe ME/CFS) to healthy people and multiple sclerosis patients. They found that ME/CFS patients had unusual patterns in their T cells—a type of immune cell—but not in natural killer cells, contrary to what some earlier studies suggested.

Researchers measured levels of a protein called CD57 on immune cells in ME/CFS patients and compared them to healthy people. They found that ME/CFS patients had significantly lower amounts of CD57 on their T cells (a type of white blood cell). This difference was large enough that measuring CD57 levels could potentially help doctors diagnose ME/CFS.

Chronic fatigue syndrome in the emergency department.

This study surveyed 282 people with ME/CFS to understand their experiences in emergency departments (EDs). About 59% had visited an ED, often due to symptoms like dizziness or severe fatigue. Many patients reported that ED staff didn't understand their illness and sometimes dismissed their symptoms as psychological rather than physical, leading to poor experiences and feelings that they weren't taken seriously.
