Chronic fatigue syndrome and occupational status: a retrospective longitudinal study.

Researchers tracked 316 patients for about 9.5 months and found that just over half of those working at the start stayed employed, while only 9% of those not working returned to a job. The study shows that while ME/CFS makes work very difficult, it is possible for some people to maintain or regain employment with the right support.

They found that people with ME/CFS had unusual patterns during exercise: they breathed inefficiently, their hearts didn't speed up as much as expected, but they felt the exercise was harder than controls thought it was. These differences remained even when comparing people with similar fitness levels.

This large international study surveyed 1,418 people with ME/CFS and their family members to understand how the illness affects quality of life for both patients and loved ones. People with ME/CFS reported very low health status (averaging 34 out of 100) with major difficulties in daily activities, pain, and movement, while their family members experienced significant emotional distress including worry, frustration, and sadness, plus practical impacts on family life and finances. The study found that the worse a patient's quality of life is, the worse their family member's quality of life tends to be as well.

Revisiting IgG Antibody Reactivity to Epstein-Barr Virus in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Its Potential Application to Disease Diagnosis.

This study looked at antibody responses to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a common virus linked to ME/CFS onset in some patients. Researchers analyzed blood samples from 92 ME/CFS patients and 50 healthy people, testing reactions to over 3,000 EBV proteins. They found that in patients whose ME/CFS started after a suspected EBV infection, two specific viral proteins triggered stronger antibody responses than in healthy controls. These antibody patterns could correctly identify about 83% of infected patients and 72% of healthy people, suggesting they might become useful diagnostic markers.

This suggests that brain structure may be connected to how tired we feel, even before someone develops a condition like ME/CFS.

The study confirms that ME/CFS is generally a serious condition with poor prognosis, but suggests that improvement is possible at any age.

The severity of fatigue and blood pressure/temperature regulation problems seemed connected to lower levels of a specific antibody (ADRB2), suggesting the immune system's dysregulation may play a role in these symptoms.

This study tested 102 COVID-19 patients (some who were hospitalized, some who weren't) within about 3-4 weeks of infection to see how common these cognitive problems really were and what might cause them. The researchers found that while most patients felt foggy-headed, people who had been hospitalized showed more measurable problems with memory and thinking speed than those who recovered at home.

This study tested three antiviral medications in ME/CFS patients who had reactivated herpesvirus infections (HHV-6 and HHV-7). Over three months, the drug artesunate was more effective at clearing the virus from the blood than two other antivirals (valaciclovir and valganciclovir). By the third month, artesunate cleared the virus in about 68% of HHV-6 cases and 63% of HHV-7 cases, compared to 37% and 34% with valaciclovir.
