This study looked at how often mood and anxiety disorders occur in people with ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and irritable bowel syndrome compared to people without these conditions. Researchers found that people with these syndromes do experience depression and anxiety more often than the general population, but most people with these conditions do not have a psychiatric disorder. ME/CFS patients had the highest rates of mood and anxiety problems among the three conditions studied.

The role of the partner and relationship satisfaction on treatment outcome in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at how a patient's partner and their relationship quality affect how well cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) works for ME/CFS. Researchers found that when partners were overly helpful or protective (called 'solicitous responses'), patients were less likely to improve significantly from their fatigue and disability. The study suggests that addressing how partners respond to the illness during treatment may be important for better outcomes.

Frequency of Migraine Headaches in Patients With Fibromyalgia.

This study examined how often people with fibromyalgia experience migraine headaches. Researchers surveyed over 1,700 fibromyalgia patients and found that about 56% met the criteria for migraines. People with both conditions were more likely to also have depression, anxiety, IBS, and chronic fatigue syndrome, suggesting these overlapping conditions increase overall burden on patients.

Relationship between chronic nonurological associated somatic syndromes and symptom severity in urological chronic pelvic pain syndromes: baseline evaluation of the MAPP study.

This study looked at people with chronic pelvic pain conditions and found that many of them also had other chronic illnesses like fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, or chronic fatigue syndrome. People who had both pelvic pain and these other conditions reported more severe symptoms and higher rates of depression and anxiety. The researchers found this pattern was more common in women than in men.

The Process of Change in Pain During Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

This study looked at how cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)—a talk therapy that helps change thoughts and behaviors—reduces pain in ME/CFS patients. Researchers followed 142 patients over the course of their treatment and found that pain and fatigue tend to improve together. The improvement in pain appeared to be partly explained by patients doing more physical activity and thinking less about their symptoms, though other factors also played a role.

This study looked at hospital workers to see how many experienced lower back pain and whether it was connected to chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). About 60% of the 365 hospital staff surveyed had back pain in the previous year, and those with back pain were significantly more likely to also have ME/CFS. Working irregular shifts and spending many years in the job appeared to increase the risk of developing ME/CFS.

This study compared women with endometriosis in the USA and Puerto Rico to see if their symptoms and health conditions differed. Researchers found that while both groups experienced similar types of pain and fertility problems, women in the USA reported more severe pain and more often had other chronic conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Women in Puerto Rico more frequently reported miscarriages.

This study compared how ME/CFS affects children, teenagers, and adults by looking at patient data from clinics in the UK and a trial in the Netherlands. The researchers found that ME/CFS looks quite different depending on age: younger children were more likely to have sore throats and less likely to have problems with thinking or memory, while teenagers were more prone to headaches and depression. Adults showed more severe fatigue and disability overall.

Attention network test: assessment of cognitive function in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested whether a computer-based attention test called the Attention Network Task (ANT) could measure thinking and processing speed problems in ME/CFS patients. Researchers compared 41 ME/CFS patients (some with depression, some without) to 29 healthy controls and found that ME/CFS patients took longer to respond to tasks, especially when the tasks were complex, even though they made the same number of mistakes as controls. This suggests that slowed thinking speed, rather than errors, may be the main cognitive problem in ME/CFS.

Prolonged fatigue in Ukraine and the United States: Prevalence and risk factors.

This study compared how common prolonged, disabling fatigue is in Ukraine versus the United States by surveying thousands of people in both countries. Researchers found that prolonged fatigue was more common in Ukraine (5.2%) than in the U.S. (3.7%), and identified different risk factors in each country—such as socioeconomic status, mood disorders, and various health conditions. Importantly, about one-fifth of people with prolonged fatigue had no other diagnosed medical or mental health condition.

Changes in Gut and Plasma Microbiome following Exercise Challenge in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).

This study examined whether the bacteria living in the gut of ME/CFS patients behave differently after exercise compared to healthy people. Researchers collected stool and blood samples from 10 ME/CFS patients and 10 healthy controls before and after an intense exercise test. They found that after exercise, ME/CFS patients showed unusual changes in their gut bacteria and had more bacterial DNA circulating in their blood 72 hours later—something that didn't happen in healthy people.

Robuvit® (Quercus robur extract) supplementation in subjects with chronic fatigue syndrome and increased oxidative stress. A pilot registry study.

This study tested whether a natural plant extract called Robuvit (made from oak wood) might help people with ME/CFS who had signs of increased oxidative stress—a type of cellular damage. Thirty-eight people with ME/CFS took Robuvit supplements for 6 months while also following a structured lifestyle plan (better sleep, exercise, diet, and relaxation), and they were compared to 42 similar people who followed the plan without the supplement. The group taking Robuvit reported more improvement in fatigue symptoms and had lower markers of oxidative stress in their blood.

This study followed over 5,600 children from birth to age 13 to see whether mothers' anxiety and depression, and children's own psychological stress, were linked to severe, disabling fatigue in early adolescence. Researchers found that children whose mothers experienced anxiety or depression during pregnancy and early childhood had a higher risk of developing chronic fatigue at age 13. The findings suggest that family-based approaches to treatment may be important for children with disabling fatigue.

Cognitive dysfunction in adolescents with chronic fatigue: a cross-sectional study.

This study compared thinking and memory skills in teenagers with chronic fatigue to healthy teenagers. Teenagers with chronic fatigue performed worse on tests of processing speed (how fast they could think), working memory (holding information in mind), and learning new information. These differences were not explained by depression, anxiety, or sleep problems alone.

Slow wave sleep in the chronically fatigued: Power spectra distribution patterns in chronic fatigue syndrome and primary insomnia.

This study looked at the deepest, most restorative type of sleep in people with ME/CFS and primary insomnia to understand why both groups feel tired and don't feel rested despite sleeping. Researchers used special brain wave measurements during sleep and found that both groups had unusual patterns of very slow brain waves during deep sleep, even though they were getting normal or sometimes even extra amounts of deep sleep. The findings suggest that the problem may not be getting enough deep sleep, but rather that the quality or type of brain activity during that sleep is different.

People with ME/CFS and fibromyalgia face more stigma and judgment from others compared to people with more widely recognized illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis. This study found that when women with ME/CFS have good social support, they are less likely to hide their illness due to shame. However, women with ME/CFS reported finding less personal growth and positive change from their illness experience compared to women with other chronic conditions.

This study found that fatigue is very common and severely disabling in people with mitochondrial disease. About 62% of patients reported excessive fatigue, and 32% experienced severe fatigue that significantly limited their daily activities—levels comparable to fatigue in ME/CFS patients. The researchers surveyed 132 patients and compared their fatigue levels to healthy people and ME/CFS patients to understand how widespread and serious this problem is.

Increased risk of chronic fatigue syndrome in patients with migraine: A retrospective cohort study.

This study found that people with migraine headaches are 1.5 times more likely to develop ME/CFS than people without migraine. The risk was even higher in older adults (age 65+), who were more than twice as likely to develop ME/CFS if they had migraines. The more frequently someone had migraines, the higher their risk of developing ME/CFS appeared to be.

This large study of the Norwegian population during the 2009 flu pandemic found that people who caught the H1N1 influenza virus were more than twice as likely to develop ME/CFS afterward. However, people who received the pandemic flu vaccine did not show an increased risk of developing ME/CFS. This suggests that actually getting infected with the flu virus itself, rather than the vaccine, may trigger ME/CFS in some people.
