This study analysed research published between 1998 and 2025 on how exercise relates to cognitive fatigue—the mental exhaustion that comes from sustained thinking. Researchers found that scientific interest in this topic has grown, with studies shifting from simply describing fatigue symptoms to examining how thinking, emotions, and body function work together. However, this bibliometric review maps what researchers have published; it does not test whether the theories proposed in those papers are actually correct.
By analogy, this mapping of research trends in exercise-related cognitive fatigue may inform understanding of post-exertional malaise and cognitive impairment in ME/CFS, which share overlapping concepts of fatigue and exertion-triggered worsening. The thematic shift from descriptive symptom measurement to mechanistic investigation of executive function and brain–body integration mirrors the direction ME/CFS research may need to follow. However, the study cohort (general exercise and cognitive fatigue literature) is not ME/CFS-specific, so direct relevance to ME/CFS pathophysiology remains unclear.
This bibliometric analysis does not establish causation, validate any mechanistic hypothesis, or demonstrate that exercise interventions treat or manage cognitive fatigue or ME/CFS. It does not assess the quality or replicability of the individual studies it surveyed. It does not determine whether the thematic shifts observed reflect genuine scientific progress or publication bias toward particular research trends.
