Prevalence and factors associated with the use of acupuncture and Chinese medicine: results of a nationally representative survey of 17161 Australian women.

This study surveyed over 17,000 Australian women to find out how many use acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, and what health conditions are associated with using these treatments. The researchers found that women with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), along with other long-term health problems like low iron, arthritis, and endometriosis, were more likely to try acupuncture or Chinese medicine.

Prefrontal Structure Varies as a Function of Pain Symptoms in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

This study examined brain structure in 89 women with ME/CFS using brain imaging. Researchers found that the amount of pain a patient experiences—not fatigue—was the strongest predictor of changes in a specific brain region called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. People with more pain showed smaller brain volume and lower levels of brain chemicals in this region, even after accounting for fatigue, depression, and physical activity.

Researchers tested three common questionnaires that measure fatigue and symptoms in ME/CFS patients to see which ones work best. They found that two popular questionnaires had problems—many patients scored so high they hit the ceiling (meaning the test couldn't measure if they got worse), and the questions weren't reliable. The DePaul Symptom Questionnaire worked much better, especially at measuring post-exertional malaise (the worsening of symptoms after activity), and could reliably distinguish ME/CFS patients from healthy people.

Obesity in adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome: an observational study.

This study looked at whether adolescents with ME/CFS are more likely to be overweight or obese than young people without the condition. Researchers compared teenagers attending specialist ME/CFS clinics with healthy teenagers from a large population study. They found that adolescents with severe ME/CFS (those referred to specialist services) had higher rates of obesity, particularly by age 16.

Comorbidity in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

This study looked at 1,757 people with ME/CFS in Spain to understand what other health conditions they commonly experience alongside their ME/CFS. Researchers found that more than 80% of patients had at least one additional condition, such as fibromyalgia, thyroid problems, vitamin D deficiency, or ligament issues. The study identified five different groups of ME/CFS patients based on their comorbidities, with some groups experiencing significantly worse fatigue and quality of life than others.

Fatigue and psychosocial variables in autoimmune rheumatic disease and chronic fatigue syndrome: A cross-sectional comparison.

This study compared how people with ME/CFS and people with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (like rheumatoid arthritis) experience fatigue and cope with their symptoms. This suggests that fatigue in these different conditions may need different treatment approaches.

This study looked at the bacteria living in the gut of 50 ME/CFS patients and 50 healthy people to see if differences in gut bacteria might explain some ME/CFS symptoms. The researchers found that ME/CFS patients have unusual patterns of gut bacteria, and these patterns are different depending on whether the patient also has irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Importantly, the type and balance of gut bacteria were linked to how severe patients' fatigue, pain, and other symptoms were.

Interestingly, people in poorer areas were less likely to be diagnosed with ME/CFS but more likely to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia compared to people in wealthier areas.

This study found that ME/CFS patients have smaller hearts and lower levels of certain hormones that control blood volume and fluid balance compared to healthy people. When researchers gave half the ME/CFS patients a synthetic hormone called desmopressin for five days, about half of them felt better, with less dizziness when standing and improved ability to do daily activities.

Anxiety levels were also higher in the ME/CFS group and were connected to worse sleep quality in both groups.

This study looked at whether the HPV vaccine (used to prevent cervical cancer) was linked to developing ME/CFS in Norwegian girls and boys between 2009 and 2014. The study did find that ME/CFS became slightly more common over time in both vaccinated and unvaccinated young people.

Differential effects of childhood trauma subtypes on fatigue and physical functioning in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether different types of childhood trauma are linked to fatigue and physical disability in ME/CFS patients. These thought patterns were connected to beliefs about fear and avoidance, suggesting they may help keep ME/CFS symptoms going.

This study looked at fatigue in people with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), a condition that shares many symptoms with ME/CFS. Researchers asked 138 young people with POTS to describe their fatigue and brain fog using questionnaires. They found that fatigue comes in multiple forms and that people with POTS fall into two groups: those with mild symptoms and those with severe symptoms, with the severe group experiencing much worse brain fog and activity limitations.
