In this pilot RCT, 30 ME/CFS patients received rituximab (a B-cell depleting antibody used in cancer and autoimmune disease) or placebo. Two-thirds of the rituximab group showed clinical improvement, with delayed response patterns consistent with autoimmune disease mechanisms. The placebo group had minimal response.

Chronic fatigue syndrome in the media: a content analysis of newspaper articles.

Researchers analyzed Norwegian newspaper articles about ME/CFS published between 2008-2009 to see how they described treatments. They found that newspapers were much more likely to write positively about alternative treatments (like the Lightning Process) and negatively about evidence-based treatments (like cognitive behavioral therapy and graded exercise) than the scientific evidence supports. This matters because many people get health information from newspapers, so unbalanced reporting could influence patient choices.

In 2009, researchers reported finding a virus called XMRV in about two-thirds of ME/CFS patients in the US, raising hopes for a breakthrough in understanding the disease. This UK study tested blood samples from 186 ME/CFS patients to see if they also carried this virus, but found no evidence of XMRV in any of them. The results suggest the virus may not be common in ME/CFS patients in Europe, or that earlier findings may have been specific to certain populations.

They found no trace of XMRV in blood samples or immune cells, and people's immune systems showed no signs of having fought off this virus. This suggested that XMRV was not common in people with these blood-borne infections.

Most families found both treatments helpful and acceptable, particularly the practical parts like setting goals and gradually increasing activity. However, some felt the emotional aspects of the illness weren't fully addressed, and others had mixed feelings about how much family involvement was needed.

Researchers found that people with bladder pain syndrome were much more likely to have these other conditions compared to healthy controls. Importantly, people who had multiple overlapping conditions experienced worse pain, sleep problems, depression, and lower quality of life than those with just one condition.

Postexertional malaise in women with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at how women with ME/CFS recover from exercise compared to healthy women. After a single exercise test, 85% of healthy women felt completely back to normal within 24 hours, but none of the women with ME/CFS did—in fact, most took much longer to recover, experiencing worsening fatigue, pain, cognitive problems, and other symptoms. This research confirms that postexertional malaise is a real and serious condition that makes recovery from physical activity dramatically different for people with ME/CFS.

Microbial infections in eight genomic subtypes of chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis.

This study looked at blood samples from ME/CFS patients to identify different genetic subtypes based on how 88 genes were turned on or off. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients had distinct genetic patterns that were different from healthy people and those with depression. They also discovered that different viral infections—particularly Epstein-Barr virus and enterovirus—were linked to different genetic subtypes of ME/CFS.

This study looked for traces of a virus called MLV (murine leukemia virus-related virus) in the blood of ME/CFS patients and healthy people. Researchers found viral genetic material in 86.5% of CFS patients compared to only 6.8% of healthy controls. The viruses found were diverse rather than identical, and some patients who tested positive years earlier still showed the virus in follow-up testing.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS who experienced trauma or abuse—either as children or adults—had worse symptoms or outcomes. Researchers followed 93 patients over time and found that childhood abuse and neglect were more strongly connected to illness severity than adult experiences. However, the connections were modest, and past trauma did not predict whether the illness would get worse over time.

[Omaron in the complex treatment of patients with multiple sclerosis].

This study tested a combination medication called omaron in 33 patients with multiple sclerosis to see if it could help with fatigue and thinking problems. After 12 weeks of treatment, patients taking omaron reported feeling less tired (28.6% improvement) and showed better memory and thinking skills compared to a similar group who didn't receive the medication. The drug was well-tolerated with no serious side effects.

Researchers found that 42% of RA patients experienced severe fatigue that felt frustrating and exhausting. Importantly, this severe fatigue was more closely linked to pain, mood, sleep quality, and how patients thought about their fatigue—rather than to inflammation markers alone.

This study looked at whether parvovirus B19 (a common virus) plays a role in ME/CFS, particularly in patients with joint pain. While ME/CFS patients and healthy people had similar rates of past B19 infection, researchers found that ME/CFS patients were much more likely to have specific antibodies suggesting the virus wasn't being cleared properly from their body. Interestingly, patients with these antibodies were more likely to report chronic joint pain.

A retrospective review of the sleep characteristics in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Researchers studied sleep patterns in 118 patients with ME/CFS and fibromyalgia using objective sleep tests. They found that most patients had abnormal sleep studies showing excessive daytime sleepiness, and some had sleep features similar to narcolepsy. A genetic marker (HLA DQB1*0602) associated with narcolepsy was found in 43% of patients, much higher than in the general population.
