The study suggests that health anxiety about modern threats may influence how people interpret body signals and perceive their health.

However, most people remained significantly disabled and unemployed at the end of the study, suggesting that while some aspects may get better, ME/CFS typically leaves people unable to work long-term.

This study looked at brain scans from people with ME/CFS to measure the size of fluid-filled spaces (ventricles) in their brains. Researchers found that people with ME/CFS had slightly larger ventricles compared to healthy controls, suggesting there may be subtle physical changes in the brains of some ME/CFS patients. While this difference was close to being statistically significant, it provides another piece of evidence that ME/CFS involves measurable brain changes.

The study found no significant difference in physical fitness between the two groups, suggesting that poor fitness is not the main reason ME/CFS patients struggle with exercise.

This study asked whether exercise makes thinking and memory problems worse in people with ME/CFS. Researchers tested 21 pairs of identical twins where one twin had ME/CFS and one did not, asking them to exercise until exhausted and then testing their memory, attention, and thinking speed. The twins with ME/CFS did not show worse cognitive decline after exercise compared to their healthy twin, suggesting that exercise itself does not damage thinking ability.

Researchers surveyed over 2,000 Gulf War veterans and conducted detailed medical exams on 443 of them to look for unexplained health symptoms. They found that many veterans experienced overlapping symptoms—including cognitive problems, fatigue, and muscle pain—that resembled conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, but they found few clear physical differences between sick and healthy veterans.

This study looked at how oral surgery patients respond to intermaxillary fixation (IMF), a procedure that temporarily wires the jaw shut. Researchers measured stress hormones in urine and found that IMF causes significant stress, leading to irritability and sleep problems. When patients were given an anti-anxiety medication, their stress hormone levels were reduced.

This study tested whether a walking program could help people with ME/CFS feel better. Twenty patients with ME/CFS walked for 12 weeks at a pace matched to their fitness level. The researchers found that patients reported improvements in psychological stress and some other symptoms, and importantly, the walking did not make their ME/CFS symptoms worse.

This study looked at whether childhood abuse (sexual or physical) was more common in adults with ME/CFS compared to healthy people. Researchers surveyed a random sample from the community and found that while abuse history was linked to other types of chronic fatigue conditions, it was actually less common in people diagnosed with ME/CFS specifically. This finding contradicts earlier suggestions that most ME/CFS patients have experienced childhood abuse.

This study tested memory and thinking skills in 20 people with ME/CFS and compared them to 20 healthy people. The researchers found that people with ME/CFS performed worse on difficult memory tasks, particularly those requiring quick mental switching and staying focused despite distractions. However, their basic memory storage ability was normal.

Researchers compared 32 veterans with CFS to 62 healthy veterans using thinking and memory tests. They found that veterans with CFS did show some cognitive difficulties, even when the researchers accounted for differences in how smart people were before they got sick.

Hemodynamic instability in chronic fatigue syndrome: indices and diagnostic significance.

This study tested how the body's blood pressure and heart rate respond when patients stand up from lying down (a tilt test). Researchers found that people with ME/CFS have much more unstable cardiovascular responses compared to healthy people and those with other conditions. A mathematical score called the hemodynamic instability score (HIS) could correctly identify ME/CFS patients 97% of the time, suggesting this test might help doctors diagnose the condition.

Physiological responses to incremental exercise in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers compared how the bodies of 15 people with ME/CFS responded to a gradually increasing exercise test on a treadmill, compared to 15 healthy people. People with ME/CFS showed lower heart rates and weaker cardiovascular responses during exercise, even when they appeared to be pushing themselves as hard as they could. This suggests their bodies may have trouble with either heart function or muscle oxygen use during physical exertion.

Illness perceptions and mood in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at how ME/CFS patients' beliefs about their illness—such as what they think caused it, whether they can control it, and how long they expect it to last—relate to their mood and fatigue levels. Researchers surveyed 126 ME/CFS patients from a clinic and found that these beliefs were connected to both how tired patients felt and their levels of anxiety and depression, suggesting that what patients think about their illness may influence how much it affects them.

They compared IgE levels in 95 ME/CFS patients and 109 healthy people, including those with and without allergies. They found IgE levels were the same in both groups, suggesting that allergies are probably not a major cause of ME/CFS.

This study looked at 2,073 patients with chronic fatigue to understand how well two common diagnostic criteria (Fukuda and Holmes) identify ME/CFS. The researchers found that the Holmes criteria selected patients with more severe symptoms, while the Fukuda criteria included a broader group with milder cases. Adding or removing certain symptoms from the current diagnostic criteria could help doctors better identify who truly has ME/CFS.

Autoantibodies to a 68/48 kDa protein in chronic fatigue syndrome and primary fibromyalgia: a possible marker for hypersomnia and cognitive disorders.

Researchers tested blood samples from ME/CFS and fibromyalgia patients to look for specific antibodies (immune proteins) that might be unique to these conditions. They found that about 13% of ME/CFS patients and 16% of fibromyalgia patients had antibodies against a protein called 68/48 kDa. Importantly, patients with these antibodies were more likely to experience severe sleep problems, memory issues, and trouble concentrating.

This study compared how the bodies of people with fibromyalgia and ME/CFS respond to standing up from lying down. Researchers measured blood pressure and heart rate while patients lay down and then tilted upright for 30 minutes. They found that fibromyalgia and ME/CFS patients had very different cardiovascular responses to this position change, suggesting these are two distinct conditions rather than the same illness.

This study looked at whether oxidative stress—a type of cellular damage—might contribute to ME/CFS. Researchers compared 33 people with ME/CFS to 28 people with similar symptoms who didn't meet ME/CFS criteria. They found that people with ME/CFS had higher levels of fat damage in their blood particles and lower levels of a protective protein called transferrin, suggesting their bodies may be more vulnerable to oxidative damage.

This study examined whether ME/CFS runs in families by comparing relatives of people with ME/CFS to relatives of people with other medical conditions. Researchers found that relatives of ME/CFS patients were significantly more likely to also have ME/CFS, suggesting that family history and possibly genetics play a role in developing the condition.
