This study looked at how common sensitivity to light and sound are in people with ME/CFS compared to people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Researchers surveyed over 2,200 people and found that people with ME/CFS experience these sensitivities much more often than people with MS. People who had both light and sound sensitivity reported feeling worse overall than those without these sensitivities.

They found that each condition has a unique pattern of these microRNAs, like a biological fingerprint. Using these patterns, they created a computer model that could accurately identify which condition a person has, which could help with proper diagnosis.

This study looked at 425 people who had mild-to-moderate COVID-19 treated as outpatients and followed them for about 8 months afterward. Researchers found that 37% of these people developed long-lasting fatigue (Post-COVID-Fatigue), and those who had more symptoms during their initial infection and ongoing symptoms were more likely to experience severe fatigue. The more symptoms someone had, the worse their fatigue tended to be.

Developing a Blood Cell-Based Diagnostic Test for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Using Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells.

Researchers used a new technology called Raman spectroscopy combined with artificial intelligence to analyze blood cells from ME/CFS patients and healthy people. The test was able to correctly identify ME/CFS patients about 91% of the time and could even distinguish between mild, moderate, and severe cases with 84% accuracy. This could eventually help doctors diagnose ME/CFS with a simple blood test instead of relying only on patient symptoms.

Researchers studied 275 people with and without long COVID to understand what happens in the immune system. They found that people with long COVID have different patterns of immune cells and antibodies, including stronger responses to past viral infections like Epstein-Barr virus, and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Using computer analysis, they identified specific immune markers that could help identify who has long COVID.

Recovery and symptom trajectories up to two years after SARS-CoV-2 infection: population based, longitudinal cohort study.

This Swiss study followed over 1,100 people who had COVID-19 and compared them to people who never had the infection, tracking their recovery for two years. About 23% of infected people had not fully recovered by six months, and this number decreased only slightly to 17% by two years. Symptoms like loss of taste/smell, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and post-exertional malaise (feeling worse after physical activity) were significantly more common in people who had COVID-19 compared to those who didn't.

This study examined why people with ME/CFS and long COVID experience 'brain fog' and memory problems. Researchers tested how well people could think and remember before and after standing up quickly (which can make blood pressure drop). They found that people with these illnesses had more trouble thinking clearly after the standing test, and this was linked to unusual changes in their heart rate and blood pressure. The findings suggest that problems with blood flow to the brain during physical stress may be contributing to cognitive difficulties.

Two-thirds of patients had fatigue at 3 months, though this improved somewhat by 6 months, with about 60% still experiencing it. People who had more existing health conditions before COVID-19 were more likely to develop fatigue, suggesting that previous health status may influence recovery.

This study looked at the size of the hypothalamus (a small part of the brain that controls many body functions) in teenagers with ME/CFS compared to healthy teenagers. While the overall brain structure sizes were similar between the two groups, researchers found that in ME/CFS patients, certain areas of the hypothalamus were slightly larger when fatigue was more severe, and other areas grew larger with longer illness duration. This suggests the hypothalamus may play a role in ME/CFS, though more research is needed to understand what this means.

This study examined whether three common viruses—HHV-6, HHV-7, and parvovirus B19—play a role in ME/CFS by comparing 200 ME/CFS patients with 150 healthy people. The researchers found that ME/CFS patients were much more likely to have these viruses in an active state (replicating) rather than dormant, and those with active infections had higher levels of inflammatory markers. The severity of ME/CFS symptoms appeared linked to the presence and activity level of these viral infections.

While many experiences were shared across all groups, carers of young people faced particular struggles with providing care without clear guidance, while carers of adults and spouses worried most about what the future would hold.

They found some connections—particularly between a virus called HSV1 and brain fog in ME/CFS patients—but overall, herpesvirus antibodies explained symptoms better in MS patients than in ME/CFS patients.

Researchers looked at a special type of genetic material called circular RNA (circRNA) in the blood of ME/CFS patients and healthy people, measuring it before and after exercise. They found that ME/CFS patients have a different pattern of circular RNAs compared to healthy controls, and unlike healthy people, ME/CFS patients didn't show the normal increase in these molecules after exercise. The study identified 14 specific circular RNAs that were present in ME/CFS patients but completely absent in healthy controls, suggesting these could potentially be used as markers to help diagnose the disease.

This study tested whether a computer-based attention test called CPT3™ can reliably detect thinking and concentration problems in ME/CFS patients. Researchers compared 158 ME/CFS patients with 67 healthy people and found that ME/CFS patients performed significantly worse on measures of attention, focus, and reaction speed. The test successfully identified differences between the two groups, suggesting it could be a useful tool for doctors to help diagnose or monitor ME/CFS.
