Somatic symptom disorder in patients with post-COVID-19 neurological symptoms: a preliminary report from the somatic study (Somatic Symptom Disorder Triggered by COVID-19).

This study examined whether patients with long-lasting neurological symptoms after COVID-19 meet diagnostic criteria for somatic symptom disorder (SSD), a condition where psychological distress can amplify physical symptoms. Researchers evaluated 50 patients and found that about two-thirds met SSD criteria, though brain imaging and standard neurological tests were mostly normal. Most patients also had fatigue meeting chronic fatigue syndrome criteria, sleep problems, and significant work loss.

Prevalence of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) in Australian primary care patients: only part of the story?

This study looked at how many people in Australia have ME/CFS by examining medical records from primary care clinics between 2015-2019. Researchers found that roughly 95-104 people per 100,000 have ME/CFS in Australia, but they also discovered that many patients avoid visiting their doctors because of stigma, disbelief in the condition, and lack of available treatments. The researchers concluded that the real number of people with ME/CFS is likely much higher than what their numbers show.

Predictors of Long COVID in Patients without Comorbidities: Data from the Polish Long-COVID Cardiovascular (PoLoCOV-CVD) Study.

This study followed 488 people without serious health conditions after they recovered from COVID-19 to see who developed Long COVID symptoms. Researchers found that people who had a severe acute COVID-19 illness, higher body weight, and joint pain during their initial infection were more likely to develop Long COVID. About 45% of those who developed Long COVID had symptoms that persisted beyond the follow-up period.

Comparative Analysis of Extracellular Vesicles in Patients with Severe and Mild Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

While these differences were promising, they weren't strong enough to confirm they're reliable markers yet.

This study tested whether a simple physical exam called the Beighton score—where doctors check how flexible your joints are—accurately identifies this condition. They tested this in large groups of people from Norway and the UK, but found that the genetic changes previously reported were not reliably associated with ME/CFS. While they found some other genetic variations that showed weak signals of association, none were strong enough to be considered genuine findings.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a painful skin condition that causes recurrent boils, drainage, and scarring in areas like armpits and groin. This Dutch study surveyed over 167,000 people and found that HS is more common than previously thought (2% rather than 1%), and that people with HS often have other conditions including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and depression. The study also found that many people with HS have not yet been diagnosed or treated.

Researchers found that about one-third of people with bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) have small-fiber polyneuropathy (SFPN), a condition where tiny nerves in the skin are damaged or reduced. Notably, people with SFPN were significantly more likely to also have chronic fatigue syndrome (31% vs 10.6%). This suggests these two painful conditions may share a common nerve-related mechanism.

Generalized Worry in Patients With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Following Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: A Prospective Cohort Study in Secondary Care.

This study looked at worry in nearly 500 people with ME/CFS who received a talking therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). About 7 in 10 patients had significant worry alongside their fatigue. After CBT, patients reported notably less worry, and this improvement stayed stable months later. People who worried severely at the start also experienced worse fatigue and had more difficulty with work and social activities.

This study surveyed over 1,800 university students in Wuhan, China to understand how common ME/CFS is and what factors might contribute to it. Researchers found that about 6 in 100 students had ME/CFS, and identified several factors linked to the condition: pulling all-nighters, overeating, anxiety, and poor sleep quality increased risk, while being actively engaged in learning appeared protective. The study highlights that lifestyle and mental health factors may play important roles in ME/CFS among young adults.

Mistaken Identity: Many Diagnoses are Frequently Misattributed to Lyme Disease.

This study looked at over 1,000 patients who were referred to a hospital thinking they had Lyme disease, but actually didn't. The doctors found that 84% of these patients did not have Lyme disease at all. Instead, they had many other conditions causing their symptoms, including anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. This suggests that Lyme disease is being diagnosed too often when patients actually have other medical problems.

This study looked at blood samples taken from college students before they got sick to see if certain chemical markers could predict who would recover from mononucleosis and who would develop ME/CFS instead. Researchers found that people who later developed ME/CFS had different levels of certain chemicals in their blood before they even got sick, particularly those involved in energy production and immune function. Using a computer model based on these chemical differences, they could correctly predict with 97% accuracy which people would recover and which would develop ME/CFS.

Researchers tested 214 people with ME/CFS and 189 healthy controls using exercise bikes to see how their bodies responded to physical activity. They found that people with ME/CFS had unusual patterns during exercise: they breathed inefficiently, their hearts didn't speed up as much as expected, but they felt the exercise was harder than controls thought it was. These differences remained even when comparing people with similar fitness levels.

Impact of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) on the quality of life of people with ME/CFS and their partners and family members: an online cross-sectional survey.

This large international study surveyed 1,418 people with ME/CFS and their family members to understand how the illness affects quality of life for both patients and loved ones. People with ME/CFS reported very low health status (averaging 34 out of 100) with major difficulties in daily activities, pain, and movement, while their family members experienced significant emotional distress including worry, frustration, and sadness, plus practical impacts on family life and finances. The study found that the worse a patient's quality of life is, the worse their family member's quality of life tends to be as well.
