Medical School Education on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

This study looked at how much medical schools in the UK teach doctors-in-training about ME/CFS. Researchers sent questionnaires to all 34 UK medical schools and found that only about half actually teach ME/CFS, and the teaching varies widely between schools. Most schools said they would welcome better teaching materials and resources about ME/CFS, suggesting doctors need more education on how to recognize and diagnose this condition.

This study examined whether having an infection around the time of HPV vaccination increases the risk of developing illness symptoms afterward in Danish women. Researchers found that women who had a treated infection within one month before or after their first HPV vaccine dose were more likely to later seek care at specialized centers for suspected vaccine side effects. The symptoms reported were similar to those seen in chronic fatigue syndrome.

Post-Acute COVID-19 Symptoms, a Potential Link with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A 6-Month Survey in a Mexican Cohort.

This study followed 130 people recovering from COVID-19 for 6 months to see how many developed symptoms similar to ME/CFS. Nearly half the patients experienced ongoing fatigue, and those with fatigue tended to be older and had spent more time in the hospital. Only 13% of the patients met the strict diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS, suggesting that while some people have overlapping symptoms, post-COVID fatigue and ME/CFS may be distinct conditions.

They found that glutamate (a brain chemical) levels changed differently depending on whether someone had exercised and how their body responded, and that some fat-related molecules were different between the two conditions. This suggests that ME/CFS and Gulf War Illness may involve different problems with how the body uses energy and processes fats.

Co-occurrence of immune-mediated conditions and endometriosis among adolescents and adult women.

This study looked at whether young women and adolescents with endometriosis (a painful condition where tissue grows outside the uterus) are more likely to have immune system problems like allergies, asthma, or chronic fatigue. Researchers compared 551 women with surgically confirmed endometriosis to 652 women without it and found that those with endometriosis were significantly more likely to have chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or a history of mononucleosis. The more immune-related conditions a woman had, the higher her chances of also having endometriosis.

Researchers surveyed over 450 veterans and found that those who tend to avoid dealing with difficult emotions were more likely to have PTSD, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and digestive problems—even after accounting for combat exposure and chemical exposure during the war.

Use of Cardiopulmonary Stress Testing for Patients With Unexplained Dyspnea Post-Coronavirus Disease.

This study looked at 41 people who had long-lasting breathing problems after COVID-19, even though their standard lung and heart tests appeared normal. Researchers used a special exercise test to measure how well their bodies could use oxygen and how they breathed during activity. They found that most patients had unusual breathing patterns or reduced exercise capacity, and about half met the criteria for ME/CFS.

Researchers found that ME/CFS patients had common metabolic changes suggesting their bodies are working harder to produce energy and are using fats and proteins differently as fuel. Interestingly, patients also fell into different subgroups with distinct metabolic patterns, suggesting ME/CFS may involve different energy problems in different people.

This study looked at whether joint hypermobility (unusual flexibility and loose joints) is connected to fibromyalgia and ME/CFS. Researchers found that most patients with these conditions also had signs of hypermobility, and that higher hypermobility scores matched with worse symptoms. The results suggest that hypermobility is often missed in diagnosis, even though it significantly affects how sick people feel.

This study compared people with long-haul COVID-19 to people with ME/CFS to see if they experience similar problems with dizziness and blood flow when standing up. Researchers found that long-haul COVID patients had very similar symptoms to ME/CFS patients and showed even greater reductions in blood flow to the brain during tilt testing. The findings suggest that COVID-19 infection may trigger ME/CFS-like illness in some people.

This study compared two ways of measuring physical activity in women with ME/CFS: a written activity diary (where patients recorded what they did) and an accelerometer (a device that objectively tracks movement). The researchers found that the diary method was much less accurate in ME/CFS patients compared to healthy people. Interestingly, factors like symptom severity or quality of life didn't explain why the diary was unreliable—suggesting ME/CFS itself may affect how accurately patients can report their own activity levels.

By looking at both gene activity and chemical markers on genes, they developed a test that correctly identified ME/CFS patients about 92-97% of the time. This is important because there's currently no reliable blood test to diagnose ME/CFS.

These findings were consistent across all disease groups studied, suggesting that jawbone problems may contribute to systemic inflammation in multiple conditions.

Researchers surveyed 24 ME/CFS patients online and compared their diets to the general Australian population. They found that ME/CFS patients use supplements much more often than the general public, but couldn't find a clear link between specific nutrients or supplements and how patients felt.

The Epidemiology of Insomnia and Sleep Duration Across Mental and Physical Health: The SHoT Study.

This study looked at sleep problems in over 50,000 Norwegian college students and found that insomnia (difficulty sleeping) is much more common in people with both mental and physical health conditions. Students with ME/CFS had particularly high rates of insomnia—about 65% of women and an unspecified percentage of men experienced insomnia when they also had ME/CFS. The study also found that people with these conditions slept shorter amounts overall.

Researchers found that men and women with ME/CFS had different patterns of these blood fats compared to healthy people. Importantly, certain blood fats were connected to the severity of fatigue, headaches, and thinking difficulties, suggesting that problems with how the body processes fats may play a role in ME/CFS symptoms.

This study tested whether a treatment called oxygen-ozone autohemotherapy (a procedure where blood is mixed with ozone gas and returned to the body) could help reduce fatigue in 100 people with post-COVID symptoms. On average, the treatment reduced fatigue symptoms by 67%, and about 40% of patients reported nearly complete recovery from fatigue. The benefits appeared similar in men and women.

Researchers found that while ME/CFS patients had normal nerve function at rest, their bodies had difficulty recovering after exercise—specifically, their parasympathetic nervous system (the 'rest and digest' system) didn't reactivate properly. This delayed recovery is concerning because similar patterns in other diseases are linked to worse health outcomes.
