Patient Reported Outcome Measures of Health-Related Quality of Life and Asthenia after Thyroidectomy.

Some patients who have their entire thyroid removed experience lasting tiredness and fatigue after surgery, a condition called asthenia. This study followed 182 patients before and after thyroid surgery to measure their quality of life and fatigue levels over one year. Patients who had their entire thyroid removed were much more likely to develop asthenia (42%) compared to those who had only half removed (4%), especially if they had thyroid cancer.

Researchers surveyed over 450 veterans and found that those who tend to avoid dealing with difficult emotions were more likely to have PTSD, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and digestive problems—even after accounting for combat exposure and chemical exposure during the war.

Clinical Heterogeneity in ME/CFS. A Way to Understand Long-COVID19 Fatigue.

This study examined 84 ME/CFS patients and 22 healthy controls using questionnaires to measure fatigue, pain, sleep quality, heart rate problems, thinking difficulties, mood, and other symptoms. Researchers used statistical clustering to group patients into five distinct subtypes based on their symptom patterns. The findings suggest that ME/CFS is not one-size-fits-all—some patients have high anxiety and depression without fibromyalgia, while others have fibromyalgia combined with heart rate regulation problems, hormone imbalances, or immune issues.

Exploring anhedonia in adolescents with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): A mixed-methods study.

This study looked at whether teenagers with ME/CFS lose the ability to enjoy activities they once loved. Researchers surveyed 164 young people and found that 42% experienced some loss of enjoyment, with 15% experiencing significant loss. Many of these teenagers said their condition either stopped them from doing activities or made it hard to enjoy them, even when they did participate.

This study looked at how well a treatment called oxygen-ozone autohemotherapy (O₂-O₃-AHT) worked for ME/CFS fatigue in men versus women. Two hundred patients received this treatment and filled out a fatigue questionnaire before and one month after. The results showed that women experienced more improvement in their fatigue than men did, especially among younger patients aged 14-29.

This study looked at how Gulf War Veterans' bodies responded during exercise and whether those responses could predict post-exertional malaise (PEM)—the worsening of symptoms after physical activity. Veterans with Gulf War Illness had more severe symptom flare-ups after exercising compared to healthy veterans, but the researchers found that common exercise measurements like breathing patterns and muscle pain didn't reliably predict who would experience worse PEM.

Long COVID and chronic fatigue syndrome: A survey of elderly female survivors in Egypt.

This study looked at 115 elderly women in Egypt who had recovered from COVID-19 to see if their lingering symptoms might lead to chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Most women reported problems like fatigue, muscle pain, and sleep trouble after COVID, and the study found that stress, sadness, and poor sleep were most strongly linked to developing CFS-like symptoms. Only one person in the study actually met full criteria for probable CFS, but the researchers suggest doctors should watch for these warning signs in long COVID patients.

The research found that U.S. patients reported more severe brain fog, stomach problems, and exhaustion after activity compared to Japanese patients. Interestingly, Japanese women experienced similar levels of disability as American patients despite being less likely to receive official disability support.

Most felt prepared for the visits, found them helpful, and felt private. Many liked that they didn't have to travel and could continue seeing the same doctor, but only about one-third got to speak privately with their doctor without a parent present.

Chronic fatigue syndrome: an emerging sequela in COVID-19 survivors?

Some people who recover from COVID-19 continue to experience symptoms that look very similar to ME/CFS, including severe tiredness, pain, and difficulty thinking clearly. This study found that about 27% of COVID-19 survivors had these ME/CFS-like symptoms, and they reported worse sleep, more fatigue, and more difficulty with basic activities compared to those who recovered normally. The researchers measured markers of nerve damage and inflammation to understand what might be causing these symptoms.

This study tested whether a treatment called oxygen-ozone autohemotherapy (a procedure where blood is mixed with ozone gas and returned to the body) could help reduce fatigue in 100 people with post-COVID symptoms. On average, the treatment reduced fatigue symptoms by 67%, and about 40% of patients reported nearly complete recovery from fatigue. The benefits appeared similar in men and women.

Analysis of Gender Differences in HRV of Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Using Mobile-Health Technology.

Researchers used a smartphone app connected to a heart monitor to measure heart rate variability (how much the time between heartbeats varies) in ME/CFS patients and healthy people. This suggests that ME/CFS may affect the heart's nervous system control differently in men versus women.

Researchers tested whether a simple saliva test could help diagnose severe ME/CFS in children and teens. They measured two protein fragments in saliva from young people with ME/CFS and compared them to healthy controls. The study found that this 'Fatigue Biomarker Index' showed significant differences between those with severe ME/CFS and healthy youth, suggesting it might one day be a useful objective test to help doctors diagnose the condition.

This large study of nearly 80,000 Dutch adults found that about 9 out of 100 people experience dry eye symptoms. Interestingly, younger adults (ages 20-30) reported dry eye more often than expected. The researchers discovered that dry eye is connected to many different health conditions, including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, and various autoimmune diseases.

This study tested saliva samples from people with ME/CFS and healthy people to measure levels of common viruses that stay dormant in the body. Researchers found that two viruses (HHV-6B and HHV-7) were present at higher levels in people with ME/CFS, especially in those whose viral levels went up and down over time. Importantly, when these viral levels were higher, patients reported worse symptoms like pain, brain fog, and heart/blood pressure problems.
