This study investigated whether hepatitis C virus (HCV) can infect and replicate in nerve cells, since some HCV patients experience fatigue, depression, and memory problems. Researchers tested whether HCV could enter and survive in different types of brain and nerve cells in the laboratory. They found that HCV could enter one type of peripheral nerve cell, but could not replicate in any of the brain or nerve cell types tested.

A virus called XMRV was discovered in 2009 and researchers initially thought it might be linked to ME/CFS. However, studies from different countries could not confirm this connection, and many scientists now believe the virus was not actually present in patient samples but was instead introduced by accident during laboratory testing. While the virus can infect human cells in theory, it does not appear to be a significant cause of ME/CFS.

This review suggests that ME/CFS may develop when the body has trouble controlling infections early on, leading to long-term inflammation in the brain. The authors propose that this inflammatory process—involving both the immune system and the nervous system—could explain many ME/CFS symptoms and why more women are affected than men. They also suggest that anti-inflammatory treatments targeting a protein called TNF might help patients.

Researchers infected mice with a virus similar to one that has been linked to chronic fatigue syndrome in humans. They found that infected mice showed fatigue-like symptoms (reduced activity, altered sleep and body temperature) during the first 1-2 weeks of infection. Notably, when these mice were given a bacterial toxin challenge a month later, they had much stronger and longer-lasting reactions than uninfected mice, suggesting that latent viral infection may make the body oversensitive to future immune challenges.

This suggests that when XMRV appeared in patient samples, it likely came from contamination during testing rather than being a real cause of ME/CFS.

Nucleic Acid, Antibody, and Virus Culture Methods to Detect Xenotropic MLV-Related Virus in Human Blood Samples.

Researchers developed sensitive tests to detect a virus called XMRV in blood samples. They used their tests on blood and tissue samples from patients with prostate cancer, but did not find the virus in any of the blood samples they tested. This study shows that while their detection methods work well, XMRV was not present in the patients' blood.

This study examined whether XMRV, a virus that had been proposed as a potential cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, could establish persistent infection in primates similar to humans. Researchers injected five macaques with XMRV and tracked the virus over 9 months, finding that it created a long-lasting infection that spread to multiple organs and tissues, even when it disappeared from the blood. The virus affected different cell types in different organs and triggered some immune responses, but these responses were weak and didn't effectively clear the infection.

This study asked 19 ME/CFS patients about their experiences with a new type of therapy called pragmatic rehabilitation. Researchers found that patients were more likely to stick with treatment if their doctor believed them, if they accepted their ME/CFS diagnosis, and if the treatment approach matched how they understood their own illness. When patients had very different ideas about what was causing their illness than what the therapy suggested, they were less likely to complete the treatment.

Researchers found traces of enterovirus (a common virus that infects the gut) inside these tumors using special staining techniques. The authors suggest this might indicate a link between chronic enterovirus infection and the development of these tumors, though much more research is needed to understand if this connection is real.

This study compares burnout (exhaustion from work stress) and ME/CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) by reviewing existing research and historical records. Though these conditions developed separately—burnout in psychology and CFS in medicine—they share many similar symptoms and appear to involve energy depletion. The authors found that while both conditions involve overload, need for rest, and affect similar types of people, they are often described differently depending on whether they're viewed through a psychological or medical lens.

Finding the right balance of physical activity: a focus group study about experiences among patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study asked ME/CFS patients about their experiences with physical activity to understand when exercise helped and when it caused problems. The researchers found that patients weren't against activity itself, but what mattered most was having a choice in the type and intensity of exercise, being able to adjust it to their own needs, and having support from healthcare providers. When activity was forced or not personalized, it often led to setbacks and made patients feel they had lost control of their bodies.
