Factors associated with work status in chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers surveyed 507 patients and found that about half were still working, while nearly one-third had stopped working completely. Researchers studied blood samples from 33 ME/CFS patients and 21 healthy people to look for differences in how their genes were working. They found that ME/CFS appears to involve problems with the immune system (the body's defense mechanism) and how cells produce energy. By matching these gene differences with existing FDA-approved drugs, they identified immunosuppressant medications as potential candidates that might help reduce ME/CFS symptoms.

Elevated blood lactate in resting conditions correlate with post-exertional malaise severity in patients with Myalgic encephalomyelitis/Chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at lactate levels (a substance produced by muscles) in the blood of ME/CFS patients who were at rest. Researchers found that about 45% of patients had higher-than-normal lactate levels even when not exercising. Importantly, patients with elevated resting lactate tended to experience more severe post-exertional malaise (the symptom flare-ups that follow physical activity).

The Impact of a Structured Exercise Programme upon Cognitive Function in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients.

This study tested whether a 16-week structured exercise program could help improve 'brain fog' and thinking problems that many people with ME/CFS experience. Of 53 patients who started the program, 34 completed it. Tests showed that those who finished the program had modest improvements in attention and processing speed, particularly in how quickly and accurately they could respond to visual tasks.

Most people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience muscle and joint pain, but the pain works differently in different people. This study found three distinct groups: one with mixed types of pain, one with pain driven by nervous system sensitivity, and one with pain in specific areas that improves when the IBD is under control. The group with nervous system-driven pain had higher rates of depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

[Fatigue among working and non-working students: a sociological analysis of the environmental determinants of its level].

Interestingly, non-working students reported significantly more fatigue than working students. They found that the questionnaire reliably captures how tired ME/CFS patients feel, works the same way for different ages and genders, and can detect when fatigue changes over time. This tool may help doctors and researchers measure whether new treatments for ME/CFS actually work.

However, there's no clear agreement on how much of a drop counts as 'significant.' This study looked at over 1,000 people with ME/CFS to see whether this requirement actually helps doctors identify who has the illness. The researchers found that when diagnostic criteria clearly describe which symptoms to look for and how severe they should be, the 'significant drop in functioning' requirement may not be necessary.

Researchers tested blood samples from 50 ME/CFS patients and 50 healthy people to see if ME/CFS patients had unusual antibodies (immune proteins) that attack nerve cells. While a small number of both patients and healthy people had some immune activity toward nerve proteins, only one ME/CFS patient had a specific antibody that could be clearly identified. Interestingly, the patients who did have these antibodies tended to have more severe symptoms and had become ill more recently.

Prediction of long-term outcome after cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study followed 511 ME/CFS patients for up to 10 years after they completed cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to see which factors predicted who would recover better long-term. Researchers found that patients who started with less severe fatigue, had symptoms for a shorter time before treatment, and felt more in control of their fatigue tended to have better outcomes years later. The study suggests that maximizing improvements during treatment and addressing pain may be important for lasting recovery.

Epidemiology of paediatric chronic fatigue syndrome in Australia.

This study looked at how many Australian children develop ME/CFS and what their experiences are like. Researchers tracked newly diagnosed cases over one year and found that the condition is quite rare in children under 10, but becomes more common in teenagers. Interestingly, the rates were very different depending on where children lived in Australia, suggesting some areas may be better at recognizing and diagnosing the condition than others.

Decreased Expression of the CD57 Molecule in T Lymphocytes of Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Researchers measured levels of a protein called CD57 on immune cells in ME/CFS patients and compared them to healthy people. They found that ME/CFS patients had significantly lower amounts of CD57 on their T cells (a type of white blood cell). This difference was large enough that measuring CD57 levels could potentially help doctors diagnose ME/CFS.

This suggests that having a recognized disease name might actually help people with ME/CFS receive better social support from their friends.

This study followed 784 young people with ME/CFS for an average of 8 years to understand how the illness progresses over time. About half of the young people reported recovery within 5 years, and by 10 years, 68% reported feeling recovered. Most young people improved in their ability to function daily, though a small group (5%) remained very unwell. Having supportive doctors, staying involved in school with flexible accommodations, and developing personal management plans were all important for long-term improvement.

Neuropsychological dysfunction in chronic fatigue syndrome and the relation between objective and subjective findings.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS who report having trouble thinking and remembering actually show problems on objective cognitive tests. Researchers gave 236 patients questionnaires about memory difficulties and gave them various thinking tests. They found that patients' own reports of cognitive problems didn't strongly match their actual test results, but those with higher fatigue, pain, and depression tended to report more thinking difficulties. The actual cognitive problems found on testing were mainly in speed of thinking and attention.
