[Fatigue among working and non-working students: a sociological analysis of the environmental determinants of its level].

This study looked at whether doctors could predict which teenagers with mono (infectious mononucleosis caused by EBV) would develop long-lasting fatigue 6 months later. The researchers found that when doctors initially thought a patient would be 'likely fatigued' or 'unsurely fatigued,' those patients were more likely to actually develop fatigue compared to those predicted as 'not fatigued.' However, the doctors' predictions were only correct about two-thirds of the time.

Epidemiology of paediatric chronic fatigue syndrome in Australia.

This study looked at how many Australian children develop ME/CFS and what their experiences are like. Researchers tracked newly diagnosed cases over one year and found that the condition is quite rare in children under 10, but becomes more common in teenagers. Interestingly, the rates were very different depending on where children lived in Australia, suggesting some areas may be better at recognizing and diagnosing the condition than others.

A new approach to find biomarkers in chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) by single-cell Raman micro-spectroscopy.

Researchers used a new scanning technology called Raman spectroscopy to look at individual cells from ME/CFS patients and healthy people. They found that cells from ME/CFS patients had higher levels of a protein building block called phenylalanine, similar to cells with broken energy-producing structures (mitochondria). Using computer learning, they could identify ME/CFS patient cells with 98% accuracy based on this signature.

This suggests that PEM is more complex than previously thought and may need to be understood as having distinct components.

They found that ME/CFS appears to involve problems with the immune system (the body's defense mechanism) and how cells produce energy. By matching these gene differences with existing FDA-approved drugs, they identified immunosuppressant medications as potential candidates that might help reduce ME/CFS symptoms.

Researchers had ME/CFS patients and healthy people do a mild exercise test and measured their pain, oxidative stress levels, and nerve activity before and after. They found that oxidative stress was linked to pain in ME/CFS patients, but unlike healthy people, ME/CFS patients didn't show improvements in pain or oxidative stress after exercise.

The Impact of a Structured Exercise Programme upon Cognitive Function in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients.

However, there's no clear agreement on how much of a drop counts as 'significant.' This study looked at over 1,000 people with ME/CFS to see whether this requirement actually helps doctors identify who has the illness. The researchers found that when diagnostic criteria clearly describe which symptoms to look for and how severe they should be, the 'significant drop in functioning' requirement may not be necessary.

They found that ME/CFS patients had unusual patterns in their T cells—a type of immune cell—but not in natural killer cells, contrary to what some earlier studies suggested.
