The Relationship between Age and Illness Duration in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

This study looked at how age and how long someone has had ME/CFS might affect their symptoms and daily functioning. Researchers divided patients into four groups based on whether they were younger or older than 55, and whether they'd had the illness for more or less than 10 years. Interestingly, older patients who had lived with ME/CFS for over 10 years reported better mental health functioning than the other groups, while younger patients with longer illness duration experienced worse immune and nervous system symptoms compared to older patients with similar illness duration.

Long-term methylphenidate intake in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether a medication called methylphenidate (also known as Ritalin) could help ME/CFS patients with concentration problems and fatigue over the long term. Researchers sent surveys to patients who had been prescribed this medication and found that about one-third of those still taking it reported significant improvement in both fatigue and concentration difficulties, and were able to work more hours.

Illness progression in chronic fatigue syndrome: a shifting immune baseline.

This study looked at three inflammatory proteins (IL-1α, IL-6, and IL-8) in the blood of people with ME/CFS at different stages of illness—newly diagnosed teenagers, people in the middle of their illness, and those who had been sick for over a decade. The researchers found that the pattern of these proteins changes as the illness progresses, suggesting that the body's immune response shifts over time. By adjusting for how long someone has been ill, doctors might be able to use these three proteins together to identify ME/CFS with 75-88% accuracy.

Low putamen activity associated with poor reward sensitivity in childhood chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at how the brains of children with ME/CFS respond to rewards compared to healthy children. Using brain imaging, researchers found that a brain region called the putamen (involved in motivation) showed less activity in children with ME/CFS, especially when facing smaller rewards. Lower activity in this area was linked to worse fatigue and less enjoyment from learning.

Neurocognitive complaints and functional status among patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

This study followed 93 patients with ME/CFS over 18 months to understand how cognitive problems (like memory and perception difficulties) and physical function change over time. Patients who had both ME/CFS and fibromyalgia reported more pain, worse physical function, and more cognitive difficulties than those with ME/CFS alone. Interestingly, pain improved over time only for the ME/CFS-only group, suggesting that having both conditions may make recovery slower and more complicated.

Factors determining fatigue in the chronic fatigue syndrome: a path analysis.

This study looked at how different factors—sleep quality, mood, and overall health—affect fatigue in ME/CFS patients. Researchers asked 167 patients to fill out questionnaires about their fatigue, sleep, personality traits, and quality of life. Surprisingly, they found that poor sleep directly harmed both physical and mental quality of life, but didn't necessarily increase fatigue scores on standard tests.

Gender differences in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at differences between men and women diagnosed with ME/CFS, comparing 119 men with 1,190 women at the time of diagnosis. Men with ME/CFS tended to be younger, single, working in skilled jobs, and more commonly reported that an infection triggered their illness. Importantly, men reported less widespread pain, muscle symptoms, and other comorbid conditions than women, and reported better overall quality of life.

This study looked at how intense physical exercise affects the immune system by measuring antibodies (immune proteins) in ultramarathon runners before and after a race. The researchers found that two types of antibodies—IgA and IgG—increased after the race, suggesting that extreme physical stress temporarily changes how the immune system works. Understanding these changes may help explain why some people develop chronic fatigue after intense exercise.

Progressive brain changes in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome: A longitudinal MRI study.

This study used brain MRI scans taken 6 years apart to compare 15 ME/CFS patients with 10 healthy people. Researchers found that patients with ME/CFS had progressive shrinkage of white matter (the brain's communication pathways) in a specific region called the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, while healthy controls showed no change. The amount of brain shrinkage in ME/CFS patients correlated with their symptom severity.

Group Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Methods of applying the 1994 case definition of chronic fatigue syndrome - impact on classification and observed illness characteristics.

Researchers tested two different ways of diagnosing ME/CFS using the same official criteria to see if the method mattered. One method asked patients direct questions about fatigue and symptoms, while the other used standardized questionnaires with scoring thresholds. They found that both methods identified similar people as having ME/CFS (about 82% agreement), but the questionnaire method identified somewhat more cases without them being less severely ill.

The impact of chronic fatigue syndrome on cognitive functioning in adolescents.

This study looked at how ME/CFS affects thinking and concentration in teenagers. Researchers compared 59 teenagers with ME/CFS to 40 healthy teenagers and found that those with ME/CFS had lower scores on intelligence tests than their school grades would predict. When comparing teenagers' current test scores to their performance before they got sick, the ME/CFS group showed a significant decline, while healthy teens did not.

High prevalence of asymptomatic carriers of Tropheryma whipplei in different populations from the North of Spain.

Researchers tested stool samples from healthy people, HIV patients, and people with ME/CFS from Spain to see how common a bacterium called Tropheryma whipplei was in each group. They found this bacterium in about 25% of all samples, but it was more common in HIV patients (34%) than in healthy people without other conditions (20%), and was not found in any of the ME/CFS patients tested.

Support for the Microgenderome: Associations in a Human Clinical Population.

This study looked at gut bacteria in 274 ME/CFS patients and found that certain bacteria may affect symptoms differently in men and women, even when they have similar amounts of these bacteria. Specific bacteria called Firmicutes (including types like Clostridium and Lactobacillus) appeared connected to neurological, immune, and mood symptoms, but the way they affected symptoms depended on the patient's sex. This suggests that sex differences matter when understanding how gut bacteria influence ME/CFS.
