Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: a survey of GPs' attitudes and knowledge.

This study asked general practitioners (GPs) in the UK what they knew about ME/CFS and how confident they felt diagnosing and treating it. About half of the GPs surveyed didn't feel confident making a diagnosis, and 41% didn't feel confident treating the condition. The study found that GPs who believed ME/CFS was a real medical condition had much more positive attitudes toward patients.

This study looked at how people from different ethnic backgrounds (African Americans, Latinos, and European Americans) cope with ME/CFS and chronic fatigue. Researchers asked patients about their coping strategies—like turning to religion, staying active, accepting their illness, or focusing on their symptoms. The study found that different ethnic groups tend to use different coping strategies, and some approaches (like denial) seemed to be less helpful across all groups.

Fatigue in adult coeliac disease.

This study looked at fatigue in people with coeliac disease (an immune condition triggered by gluten). Researchers compared 130 coeliac disease patients—some following a gluten-free diet and some not—with 80 healthy people. They found that people with coeliac disease experienced significantly more fatigue and depression symptoms than healthy controls, though fatigue improved somewhat in those following a strict gluten-free diet.

This study asked both ME/CFS patients and general practitioners (GPs) in Wales what they knew about ME/CFS. Researchers found that many GPs had very little specialist knowledge about the condition, and concerningly, only about half of the GPs surveyed actually believed ME/CFS was a real illness. The study suggested that creating better educational materials for both GPs and patients could help improve understanding and care.

Researchers tested blood and urine samples from ME/CFS patients and compared them to healthy people, those with depression, and those with rheumatoid arthritis. Previous studies claimed certain chemicals in urine were markers for ME/CFS, but this study could not confirm those earlier findings. However, the study did find some signs of inflammation and possible muscle changes that might explain why ME/CFS patients experience fatigue and muscle pain.

This study tested how ME/CFS patients' immune systems respond to stress compared to healthy people. Researchers gave both groups a stressful public speaking task, then exposed their blood samples to a bacterial substance to measure immune response. Unlike healthy controls whose immune response increased after stress, ME/CFS patients showed a decreased immune response, suggesting their bodies may not mobilize infection-fighting chemicals normally during stress.

Is chronic fatigue syndrome a connective tissue disorder? A cross-sectional study in adolescents.

Researchers investigated whether ME/CFS is related to loose or stretchy connective tissue (the material that holds joints, skin, and blood vessels together). They compared 32 adolescents with ME/CFS to 167 healthy teenagers and measured joint flexibility, blood pressure, skin stretchiness, and blood vessel stiffness. While they found some differences—including lower blood pressure and stretchier skin in the ME/CFS group—they did not find the joint hypermobility that would be expected if ME/CFS were a connective tissue disorder.

Increased daily physical activity and fatigue symptoms in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This small study asked 6 people with ME/CFS to increase their daily walking by about 30% for 4 weeks and tracked how they felt. Unlike some previous research suggesting exercise helps, these patients reported that their muscle pain and mood actually got worse with more activity, even though they were able to increase their activity level. The researchers suggest that people with ME/CFS may have a daily limit to how much activity they can do before symptoms worsen.

Reliability of physiological, psychological, and cognitive variables in chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested whether measurements of fatigue, mood, thinking ability, and physical performance in ME/CFS patients were reliable when checked weekly over four weeks. Most measurements were reliable and consistent, but fatigue ratings—both mental and physical—varied too much week-to-week to be fully trusted. Interestingly, how well people performed during exercise didn't match up well with their reported depression or mood, suggesting the problem may be in how the brain processes fatigue rather than actual muscle weakness.

A 12-month follow-up study of self-management training for people with chronic disease: are changes maintained over time?

This study followed 171 people with chronic illnesses (including ME/CFS) for 12 months after they completed a self-management training course. The improvements they experienced at 4 months—such as better fatigue management, increased confidence in managing their health, and improved mood—stayed the same at 12 months. People continued using the techniques they learned on the course.

Gulf War veterans' health: medical evaluation of a U.S. cohort.

This study looked at over 2,000 U.S. veterans from the 1991 Gulf War, comparing those who were deployed to the Persian Gulf with those who were not. Researchers found that deployed veterans had higher rates of chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, skin problems, and stomach issues 10 years after the war. Overall physical health scores were similar between the two groups, but the increased risk of these specific conditions in deployed veterans suggests Gulf War deployment may have lasting health effects.

GB virus-C--a virus without a disease: we cannot give it chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study investigated whether a virus called GB virus-C (GBV-C) might be a cause of ME/CFS. Researchers tested blood samples from CFS patients and healthy controls for signs of current or past GBV-C infection. The epidemiology of chronic fatigue in the Swedish Twin Registry.

This Swedish study contacted over 31,000 people and found that about 2.4% had symptoms matching chronic fatigue syndrome. Women were nearly four times more likely to have these symptoms than men. The researchers were surprised to find that ME/CFS may be more common than doctors previously thought.

The prevalence of self-reported chronic fatigue in a U.S. twin registry.

This study looked at how common fatigue-related illnesses are among twins in the United States and found that fatigue symptoms are quite common, affecting over one-third of people at some point in their lives. Women were 2-3 times more likely to report fatigue than men, and women typically experienced it at younger ages. People with chronic fatigue had significantly worse quality of life and more additional symptoms than those without fatigue.

This study tracked how much physical activity people with ME/CFS could do while following a walking program. Participants wore activity monitors for 4 weeks. They were able to meet their daily walking goals for the first 1-2 weeks, but then their activity levels dropped significantly and symptoms got worse, suggesting they had hit a limit their bodies could not sustain.

Awareness and knowledge of fibromyalgia among French rheumatologists and general practitioners.

This study asked French doctors (both general practitioners and specialists called rheumatologists) how much they knew about fibromyalgia, a condition with widespread muscle pain and fatigue. The results showed that most doctors had never formally learned about this condition in medical school, and many did not fully recognize it as a legitimate disease. The study highlights that doctors need better training to understand and properly diagnose fibromyalgia.

The definition of disabling fatigue in children and adolescents.

This study looked at how disabling fatigue in children and teens should be defined, since the current definition used for adults might not fit young people well. Researchers found that children with disabling fatigue that didn't quite meet the strict adult criteria still suffered just as much and missed just as much school as those who did meet the strict criteria. The study suggests that doctors should use a broader, less restrictive definition to catch all children who need help.

This study examined how exposure to low levels of jet fuel affected thinking and attention in Gulf War veterans who were chronically ill. Researchers tested veterans' reaction times on a computer task before and after brief exposures to either jet fuel fumes or clean air, done three times over three weeks. Veterans who were ill and had chemical sensitivities showed faster reaction times after jet fuel exposure, which the researchers suggest might indicate changes in brain chemistry rather than improved thinking.

Hyperventilation and amplified blood pressure response: is there a link?

This study looked at whether rapid, shallow breathing (hyperventilation) causes blood pressure to rise when people change position, such as standing up. Researchers tested 320 patients with various conditions including ME/CFS using a tilt table test while measuring breathing CO2 levels. They found that hyperventilation during the test did not lead to higher blood pressure increases, suggesting that rapid breathing may not be the cause of blood pressure problems in these patient groups.
