Fatigue in multiple sclerosis compared with chronic fatigue syndrome: A quantitative assessment.

Researchers developed a test to measure fatigue by checking how quickly a person's muscle strength drops during repeated effort. They tested this in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), people with ME/CFS, and healthy volunteers. People with MS showed more muscle fatigue than those with ME/CFS or no illness, especially if their MS affected movement control.

Behavioural effects of infectious mononucleosis.

This study looked at how infectious mononucleosis (IM) affects the brain and behavior in both the short and long term. Researchers tested memory, attention, coordination, and mood in people with acute IM, people who had recovered months earlier, and healthy controls. They found that acute IM caused similar brain and behavior problems to the flu, while people recovering from IM months later showed patterns similar to those seen in chronic fatigue syndrome patients.

This study looked at how doctors in a primary care clinic evaluate patients who complain of chronic fatigue. Researchers reviewed 425 patient charts and found that when patients mentioned chronic fatigue, doctors often did not perform complete evaluations—skipping important tests, mental health screening, and sleep history questions. Most doctors diagnosed patients with depression or general fatigue rather than investigating the chronic fatigue complaint thoroughly.

This study looked at 71 people with chronic fatigue to understand how anxiety about health (hypochondriasis) affects their quality of life. The researchers found that people who worried more about their health and had more physical symptoms reported worse quality of life, especially those diagnosed with ME/CFS. Depression also played a role in this relationship.

This study looked at personality traits in people with ME/CFS and compared them to people with multiple sclerosis, depression, and healthy controls. The researchers found that people with ME/CFS had some personality differences, but these were mostly explained by those who also had depression. Overall, the ME/CFS group fell between the healthy controls and the depression group in terms of personality traits.

This study compared depression symptoms in people with ME/CFS, multiple sclerosis (MS), and clinical depression to see if they experienced sadness in similar ways. Researchers used a standard questionnaire to measure different types of depressive symptoms. While all three groups showed some depression-related symptoms, the patterns were different—people with ME/CFS and MS reported more physical symptoms, whereas those with clinical depression reported more feelings of self-blame.

'Seronegative' Sjögren's syndrome manifested as a subset of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether some people diagnosed with ME/CFS who also experience dry eyes and mouth might actually have a related condition called Sjögren's syndrome. Researchers tested one-third of ME/CFS patients with these dry symptoms against several official diagnostic criteria for Sjögren's syndrome and found they met the criteria. However, these patients tested negative for the antibodies typically found in Sjögren's syndrome, making them an unusual variant of the disease.

Metabolic and cardiovascular effects of a progressive exercise test in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested how well women with ME/CFS could exercise compared to healthy controls by having them walk on a treadmill until exhaustion. Women with ME/CFS had lower aerobic fitness levels than healthy controls, but their hearts and lungs appeared to work normally. Importantly, the maximal exercise test did not cause a major flare-up of fatigue or other ME/CFS symptoms.

Preliminary determination of a molecular basis of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested the urine of 20 ME/CFS patients and 45 healthy controls to look for chemical differences. They found that ME/CFS patients had different levels of several substances in their urine, particularly one called CFSUM1 and beta-alanine, which were higher in patients with more severe symptoms. These findings suggest ME/CFS may have measurable biological markers that could help identify the condition.

Cognitive functioning in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study found that people with ME/CFS performed worse than healthy controls on thinking and memory tests. Patients showed slower processing speed, difficulty concentrating, and trouble learning and remembering new information. However, the researchers noted that cognitive problems varied widely between patients, so not everyone with ME/CFS experiences the same level of difficulty.

Insulin-like growth factor-I (somatomedin C) levels in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Researchers tested whether people with ME/CFS have lower levels of a growth hormone called IGF-I, which had previously been found to be low in fibromyalgia patients. They measured IGF-I levels in 15 people with ME/CFS, 15 with both ME/CFS and fibromyalgia, 27 with fibromyalgia alone, and 15 healthy volunteers. The study found no significant differences in IGF-I levels between any of the patient groups and healthy controls, suggesting that low IGF-I may not be a key feature of ME/CFS.

This study looked at people who had Lyme disease and continued to have fatigue, joint pain, and memory problems even after antibiotic treatment. Researchers compared 23 of these patients to 23 people who recovered fully from Lyme disease. The group with ongoing symptoms performed worse on memory and concentration tests, reported more sleep and mood problems, and showed signs of greater emotional distress.

Chronic fatigue and minor psychiatric morbidity after viral meningitis: a controlled study.

Researchers followed 83 patients who had viral meningitis and compared them to 76 people who had other viral infections. They found that about 12.6% of all participants developed chronic fatigue after their illness—higher than expected. Interestingly, having meningitis specifically was not a stronger risk factor than other viral infections; instead, people who took longer to recover and those with a history of psychiatric illness were more likely to develop chronic fatigue.

Cognitive idiosyncrasies among children with the chronic fatigue syndrome: anomalies in self-reported activity levels.

This study looked at whether children with ME/CFS and their parents perceive their activity levels differently than healthy children do. Researchers used activity monitors (objective measurement) and asked children and parents to estimate activity (subjective measurement) over 3 days. They found that children with ME/CFS and their parents underestimated how much activity was actually happening, and there was a bigger gap between what they expected to do in the future versus what they wanted to do.

Selective impairment of auditory processing in chronic fatigue syndrome: a comparison with multiple sclerosis and healthy controls.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have trouble processing sounds specifically, or if they struggle with processing information in general. Researchers compared people with ME/CFS, people with multiple sclerosis, and healthy people on two similar tasks—one using sounds and one using visuals. People with ME/CFS performed worse on the sound-based task but did better on the visual task, suggesting their brains may have particular difficulty processing auditory information.

This study compared immune system markers in blood samples from 76 ME/CFS patients and 69 healthy controls to see if immune abnormalities could explain fatigue severity. Researchers found one immune marker (CD11b on CD8 cells) was lower in ME/CFS patients, but most other immune measures were similar between groups, and none of these markers correlated with how severe a patient's fatigue or depression was.

This study measured how much ME/CFS affects people's daily lives and well-being compared to people without the illness and people with other serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Researchers found that people with ME/CFS had much greater difficulty with physical and mental activities than the general population and most other disease groups—similar in severity only to depression, though in different ways.

Postinfectious chronic fatigue: a distinct syndrome?

Researchers studied 717 people with chronic fatigue to see if those whose illness started after a viral infection were different from those whose illness began differently. They found that people with post-viral onset reported more flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes) and had worse day-to-day functioning, but blood tests and other markers of inflammation or ongoing viral infection did not show clear differences between the two groups.

This study looked at 222 patients with weak immune systems, many of whom also had ME/CFS and/or chronic viral infections (EBV or CMV). They were treated with transfer factor, a type of immune-boosting therapy, given as injections over 8 weeks. The researchers found that younger patients improved more often than older patients, with failure rates rising significantly in those over 54 years old.
