The survey was useful for showing that ME/CFS causes more functional impairment than other conditions like depression or infectious mononucleosis.

While the study suggests a strong link between psychiatric conditions and ME/CFS, it does not explain whether one causes the other.

The researchers found that both MS and ME/CFS patients experienced severe fatigue that affected their daily life. Interestingly, those who met the full criteria for ME/CFS had severe fatigue but didn't necessarily have more psychiatric issues than others with chronic fatigue.

This study compared people with different types of long-term fatigue conditions—including ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue without a specific diagnosis—to understand how much these conditions affect daily life and work. Researchers found that all groups struggled with unemployment and visited many doctors, but people with both ME/CFS and fibromyalgia together had the hardest time staying employed. The results show that these conditions cause serious disruption to people's lives and lead to significant healthcare costs.

Chronic fatigue in the community: 'a question of attribution'.

This study looked at 38 people with chronic fatigue who believed they had ME, comparing them to two similar groups who attributed their tiredness to psychological or social causes. After 18 months, people who believed they had ME were more disabled in daily activities like work and socializing, even though they were less emotionally distressed. Interestingly, people who attributed their fatigue to social reasons seemed to do better overall.

Viral serologies in patients with chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested 548 people with chronic fatigue to see if they had unusually high levels of antibodies to 13 common viruses, since ME/CFS often starts suddenly after a viral illness. They compared antibody levels in patients with chronic fatigue to healthy controls and found no consistent differences between the groups, suggesting these particular virus tests are not helpful in diagnosing or understanding chronic fatigue.

A comparison of the characteristics of chronic fatigue syndrome in primary and tertiary care.

This study compared ME/CFS patients seen in general doctor's offices with those referred to a specialist clinic. Patients at the specialist clinic had more severe fatigue and physical symptoms, and were more functionally disabled, but were often wealthier and more likely to believe their illness had a physical cause. Interestingly, nearly half of those referred to the specialist clinic didn't actually meet the official criteria for ME/CFS.

Postinfectious chronic fatigue: a distinct syndrome?

Researchers studied 717 people with chronic fatigue to see if those whose illness started after a viral infection were different from those whose illness began differently. They found that people with post-viral onset reported more flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes) and had worse day-to-day functioning, but blood tests and other markers of inflammation or ongoing viral infection did not show clear differences between the two groups.

Changing epidemiology of Ross River virus disease in South Australia.

This study followed people in South Australia who had Ross River virus (RRV) infections to see how long symptoms lasted. Researchers found that more than half of patients still had joint pain and tiredness 15 months after infection, with similar patterns continuing for 30 months. The symptoms were very disabling for many people and resembled chronic fatigue syndrome.

'Seronegative' Sjögren's syndrome manifested as a subset of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether some people diagnosed with ME/CFS who also experience dry eyes and mouth might actually have a related condition called Sjögren's syndrome. Researchers tested one-third of ME/CFS patients with these dry symptoms against several official diagnostic criteria for Sjögren's syndrome and found they met the criteria. However, these patients tested negative for the antibodies typically found in Sjögren's syndrome, making them an unusual variant of the disease.

Descriptive epidemiology of chronic fatigue syndrome based on a nationwide survey in Japan.

Researchers surveyed hospitals across Japan in 1992 to understand how many people have ME/CFS and how it spreads. They found that about 0.85 cases per 100,000 people were diagnosed that year, with slightly more women affected than men. The number of cases appeared to be growing from 1992 to 1993, and a small percentage of cases started after an infection.

Clinical and neurocognitive features of the post Lyme syndrome.

This study looked at people who had Lyme disease and continued to have fatigue, joint pain, and memory problems even after antibiotic treatment. Researchers compared 23 of these patients to 23 people who recovered fully from Lyme disease. The group with ongoing symptoms performed worse on memory and concentration tests, reported more sleep and mood problems, and showed signs of greater emotional distress.

Chronic fatigue complaints in primary care: incidence and diagnostic patterns.

This study looked at how doctors in a primary care clinic evaluate patients who complain of chronic fatigue. Researchers reviewed 425 patient charts and found that when patients mentioned chronic fatigue, doctors often did not perform complete evaluations—skipping important tests, mental health screening, and sleep history questions. Most doctors diagnosed patients with depression or general fatigue rather than investigating the chronic fatigue complaint thoroughly.

This study looked at how infectious mononucleosis (IM) affects the brain and behavior in both the short and long term. Researchers tested memory, attention, coordination, and mood in people with acute IM, people who had recovered months earlier, and healthy controls. They found that acute IM caused similar brain and behavior problems to the flu, while people recovering from IM months later showed patterns similar to those seen in chronic fatigue syndrome patients.

This study tested whether a substance called carnitine, which helps muscles use fat for energy, might be low in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and could explain their severe fatigue.
