Behavioural effects of infectious mononucleosis.

This study looked at how infectious mononucleosis (IM) affects the brain and behavior in both the short and long term. Researchers tested memory, attention, coordination, and mood in people with acute IM, people who had recovered months earlier, and healthy controls. They found that acute IM caused similar brain and behavior problems to the flu, while people recovering from IM months later showed patterns similar to those seen in chronic fatigue syndrome patients.

Researchers found that people with ME/CFS were more likely to have exercised regularly before getting sick, and women with ME/CFS were more likely to have never had children. Depression was more common after ME/CFS developed, though it wasn't more common before illness onset.

This study looked at personality traits in people with ME/CFS and compared them to people with multiple sclerosis, depression, and healthy controls. The researchers found that people with ME/CFS had some personality differences, but these were mostly explained by those who also had depression. 'Seronegative' Sjögren's syndrome manifested as a subset of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether some people diagnosed with ME/CFS who also experience dry eyes and mouth might actually have a related condition called Sjögren's syndrome. Researchers tested one-third of ME/CFS patients with these dry symptoms against several official diagnostic criteria for Sjögren's syndrome and found they met the criteria. However, these patients tested negative for the antibodies typically found in Sjögren's syndrome, making them an unusual variant of the disease.

Researchers developed a sensitive test to detect human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) DNA in blood. They tested blood samples from children with a specific rash illness, bone marrow transplant patients, HIV-infected patients, people with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and healthy adults. The test found HHV-6 DNA most often in children with the rash illness, less commonly in transplant and HIV patients, rarely in ME/CFS patients, and not at all in healthy people.

Sleep disturbances and fatigue in women with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at sleep problems in women with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Researchers found that both groups had significant sleep difficulties, and that trouble staying asleep was the most common sleep problem reported. There was a clear link between poor sleep and fatigue—women who slept poorly felt more tired.

They found that 77% of ME/CFS patients had antibodies suggesting exposure to or active HHV-6 infection, compared to only 12% of healthy controls. This suggests HHV-6 may be more common in people with ME/CFS, though it's unclear whether the virus causes the illness or is simply more active in these patients.

Researchers tested 11 different immune system markers in ME/CFS patients and compared them to fatigued people without ME/CFS. They found that three immune tests (protein A binding, Raji cell test, and complement proteins C3 or C4) showed different results between the groups. However, most other immune tests they looked at, including antibody levels and other complement markers, did not reliably distinguish ME/CFS patients from those with other causes of fatigue.

This study tested whether people with chronic fatigue have real problems with thinking and memory, or whether these complaints are mainly due to depression and anxiety. Researchers gave cognitive tests and brain scans (MRI) to people with chronic fatigue, people with depression, and healthy controls. They found that people with chronic fatigue performed similarly to controls on objective tests, and brain scans showed no consistent abnormalities. The researchers concluded that complaints of cognitive problems were likely related to mood symptoms rather than physical brain changes.

Researchers found that patients with ME/CFS and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) often have similar antibodies in their blood—proteins the immune system produces that may attack the body's own tissues. About 62% of ME/CFS patients and 73% of FMS patients had antibodies against serotonin, a chemical important for mood and pain regulation. Interestingly, these antibodies were also found in family members of affected patients, suggesting a genetic component may play a role.

This study looked at 64 ME/CFS patients to understand whether psychiatric conditions (like depression or anxiety) are part of ME/CFS itself or develop separately. Researchers found that patients without pre-existing psychiatric disorders had milder illness overall, suggesting that ME/CFS can occur on its own. Most patients improved with counseling and by staying within their energy limits.

This study looked at how a major natural disaster (Hurricane Andrew in 1992) affected people with ME/CFS living in Florida. Patients who experienced the most hurricane damage had worse ME/CFS symptoms and greater difficulty with daily activities compared to those in less-affected areas. Interestingly, how stressed people felt about the hurricane and whether they had social support mattered more than the actual damage itself.

This study measured electrical activity in the brains of people with ME/CFS and healthy controls using a simple listening task where they had to identify specific sounds. Researchers found no differences in brain wave patterns (called P300) between the two groups, even though many ME/CFS patients report problems with memory and attention. This suggests that brain electrical activity measured this way may not be a reliable marker for ME/CFS.

The impact of catastrophic beliefs on functioning in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether how people think about ME/CFS affects how disabled they become. Researchers asked 282 people with ME/CFS what they thought would happen if they pushed themselves too hard, and sorted their answers into catastrophic (very negative) or non-catastrophic thinking. People who had catastrophic thoughts about pushing themselves were significantly more fatigued and more disabled in work, household tasks, sleep, socializing, and hobbies—even though they had been sick for similar lengths of time as others.

Seroepidemiology of chronic fatigue syndrome: a case-control study.

Researchers tested people with ME/CFS and healthy control groups for antibodies to many common viruses, including herpesviruses and enteroviruses. They found no differences between the two groups—patients with ME/CFS did not have higher levels of antibodies to any of the viruses tested. This suggests that recent or past infection with these particular viruses is not a distinguishing feature of ME/CFS.
