[The Epstein-Barr virus and chronic fatigue syndrome].

This small study looked at whether ME/CFS symptoms develop after people recover from infectious mononucleosis caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Researchers followed 31 patients who had recovered from mono and found that several developed ongoing fatigue, sore throats, and sleep problems in the months and years after their acute illness. The results suggest a possible connection between EBV infection and ME/CFS symptoms.

Researchers measured levels of chlorinated hydrocarbons—chemicals that persist in the environment and accumulate in the body—in the blood of people with ME/CFS and compared them to healthy controls. People with ME/CFS had significantly higher levels of these chemicals, particularly a pesticide byproduct called HCB, suggesting that long-term exposure to these substances might play a role in developing the illness.

Chronic fatigue and the chronic fatigue syndrome: prevalence in a Pacific Northwest health care system.

This study surveyed over 3,000 people in a Seattle health plan to find out how common ME/CFS and chronic fatigue are in the community. Researchers found that about 19% of people reported chronic fatigue, but only a tiny fraction actually met the strict diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS. Those with ME/CFS or chronic fatigue had worse physical health, more difficulty with daily activities, and more emotional stress compared to healthy people without fatigue.

This 1995 study compared 47 people with ME/CFS to 30 healthy controls to understand how the condition affects daily life and well-being. Using surveys and interviews, researchers found that ME/CFS patients experienced significantly worse quality of life, particularly in social activities and relationships. The findings showed that isolation and loss of ability to work or participate in hobbies were major impacts that deserved more clinical attention.

Comparison of coxsackie B neutralisation and enteroviral PCR in chronic fatigue patients.

Researchers tested whether two different methods of detecting enterovirus (a type of virus) could identify it in ME/CFS patients. One method looked for antibodies (immune proteins) the body makes against Coxsackie B virus, while the other used PCR to directly detect viral genetic material. They found that the PCR test was better at distinguishing ME/CFS patients from healthy people, but the antibody test could not tell the two groups apart.

This suggests that having a naturally 'busy' or hyperactive lifestyle before becoming ill might play a role in developing ME/CFS.

This study looked at sleep problems in women with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Researchers found that both groups had significant sleep difficulties, and that trouble staying asleep was the most common sleep problem reported. There was a clear link between poor sleep and fatigue—women who slept poorly felt more tired.

This study looked at whether how people think about ME/CFS affects how disabled they become. Researchers asked 282 people with ME/CFS what they thought would happen if they pushed themselves too hard, and sorted their answers into catastrophic (very negative) or non-catastrophic thinking. People who had catastrophic thoughts about pushing themselves were significantly more fatigued and more disabled in work, household tasks, sleep, socializing, and hobbies—even though they had been sick for similar lengths of time as others.

This study looked at 64 ME/CFS patients to understand whether psychiatric conditions (like depression or anxiety) are part of ME/CFS itself or develop separately. Researchers found that patients without pre-existing psychiatric disorders had milder illness overall, suggesting that ME/CFS can occur on its own. Most patients improved with counseling and by staying within their energy limits.

About 62% of ME/CFS patients and 73% of FMS patients had antibodies against serotonin, a chemical important for mood and pain regulation. Interestingly, these antibodies were also found in family members of affected patients, suggesting a genetic component may play a role.

Understanding these separate aspects could help doctors better assess and treat ME/CFS in individual patients.

Researchers found that people with all three conditions experienced much higher levels of fatigue than healthy people, and those with ME/CFS and MS also had greater difficulty doing everyday activities. The study highlights how serious and disabling fatigue can be across these different conditions.

Researchers found that abnormal levels of these antibodies were twice as common in ME/CFS patients, and the effect was even stronger in sicker patients. This suggests these antibodies might help doctors identify which ME/CFS patients have more severe illness.

They found that while some people initially thought to have ME/CFS actually had other conditions (like a rare enzyme deficiency or inflammation), the muscle changes in alcohol misuse were quite distinct and recognizable through muscle biopsies.

Researchers tested blood samples from 13 ME/CFS patients and 13 healthy people to see if they carried human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), a common virus that most people encounter in childhood. They found that over half of the ME/CFS patients had active HHV-6 in their blood, while none of the healthy controls did. The patients also had higher antibody levels, suggesting their immune systems were actively fighting the virus.

Researchers used a specialized test called single fibre EMG to examine how well the muscles and nerves work together in people with ME/CFS. They tested 30 patients with ME/CFS and compared them to 30 healthy controls. While they found some minor differences, the differences were so small that the researchers concluded problems with nerve-muscle communication are unlikely to be a main cause of ME/CFS.

Primary juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome in adolescents.

This study looked at whether children diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) also had fibromyalgia, a condition involving widespread muscle pain and tender points. Researchers found that about 30% of children with CFS met the criteria for fibromyalgia, and these children experienced more muscle pain, sleep problems, and neurological symptoms than those without fibromyalgia. The study suggests that CFS and fibromyalgia in children may be closely related or even the same condition.
