This report describes one woman who developed ME/CFS symptoms after receiving hepatitis-B vaccine doses, with her condition worsening after the third dose. Around the time of her vaccinations, she also discovered a silicone leak from breast implants she had received years earlier. The authors suggest that the combination of the vaccine's immune-stimulating ingredient (adjuvant) and leaking silicone may have together triggered her illness.
This case raises important questions about potential interactions between multiple immune stressors in triggering ME/CFS, and highlights the need for safety surveillance in patients with implanted medical devices receiving vaccines. It underscores that ME/CFS may have multiple pathways to onset and that individual susceptibility factors warrant investigation.
This single case report cannot establish causation or prove that vaccines or silicone implants cause ME/CFS. It does not demonstrate that this outcome is common or that it would occur in other individuals with similar exposures. Temporal association (timing) does not equal causation, and other unidentified factors could have contributed to this patient's illness.
