Researchers tested a traditional Chinese herbal treatment called Jingfang Granules on mice with fatigue symptoms similar to ME/CFS. The treatment improved the mice's physical endurance, reduced markers of exhaustion and inflammation in the blood and tissues, and appeared to work by restoring healthy gut bacteria and adjusting how the body processes certain amino acids.
This study explores a potential mechanistic link between gut dysbiosis, immune activation, and fatigue in CFS through both microbiota and metabolite analysis. Understanding the role of histidine metabolism and specific bacterial changes may identify biomarkers and new therapeutic targets for ME/CFS patients.
This animal study does not prove that Jingfang Granules is effective in human ME/CFS patients; mouse fatigue models do not fully replicate human disease pathophysiology. The correlations between metabolites and bacterial taxa do not establish causation. Results cannot be generalized to human populations without clinical trials.
About the PEM badge: “PEM required” means post-exertional malaise was an explicit required diagnostic criterion for participant inclusion in this study — not that PEM was studied, observed, or discussed. Studies using criteria that do not require PEM (e.g. Fukuda, Oxford) are tagged “PEM not required”. How the atlas works →
