Longitudinal follow-up of employment status in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome after mononucleosis.

This study followed young patients with ME/CFS (triggered by mononucleosis) over 13 years to see how many could return to work. Surprisingly, about half of patients who initially couldn't work were able to return to part-time or full-time employment by the follow-up. The study found that depression, joint pain, and how long someone has been sick were linked to staying unable to work.

This study looked at whether specific genetic differences might explain why some people with Sjögren's syndrome experience severe fatigue while others don't. Researchers compared the genes of 193 Sjögren's patients with high and low fatigue levels to 376 healthy people. They found hints that variations in two genes (SLC25A40 and PKN1) might be linked to fatigue, particularly severe fatigue, but the findings were preliminary and need to be confirmed in larger studies.

Prevalence and predictors of recovery from chronic fatigue syndrome in a routine clinical practice.

This study looked at how many people with ME/CFS improved after receiving cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in a regular medical clinic. About 37.5% of patients no longer met the criteria for ME/CFS after 6 months, and 18.3% experienced full recovery. The researchers found that people were less likely to recover if they were older, had higher depression, struggled with work and social activities, or had unhelpful beliefs about their emotions.

Fatigue and depression in sick-listed chronic low back pain patients.

This study looked at 569 people with chronic lower back pain who were off work, and found that about 70% of them experienced severe fatigue. People with more fatigue also reported more pain, depression, and disability. Importantly, fatigue was able to predict who would have more difficulty functioning 6 to 12 months later, even after accounting for pain and depression.

They tested this survey with over 3,400 people in China and found that answers to the survey were connected to blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.

Improved management of primary chronic fatigue syndrome with the supplement French oak wood extract (Robuvit®): a pilot, registry evaluation.

This small study tested whether a supplement made from French oak wood extract (Robuvit®) could help people with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) when combined with a structured management plan. About half of the 91 participants received the supplement for 6 months while the other half followed the management plan alone. The supplement group showed greater improvements in fatigue symptoms and mood compared to the management-only group, and no side effects were reported.

Researchers gave this questionnaire to 675 people—some healthy and some with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, chronic pain, or ME/CFS—and checked it again after 3 and 12 months. The questionnaire performed reasonably well and remained fairly stable over time.

This study looked at whether irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) runs in families through the mother's side, and whether this pattern is linked to variations in mitochondrial DNA (the energy-producing structures in our cells). Researchers found that about 1 in 6 IBS patients had a family history suggesting maternal inheritance, and certain DNA variations were more common in these patients. This suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction may explain IBS symptoms in some people.

This study asked Australian pediatricians how they diagnose and treat children with ME/CFS. Only 39% of the doctors who responded said they actually diagnose and manage this condition, and they used very different approaches from each other. The doctors found that children with ME/CFS often also have anxiety, depression, and other conditions, and most used a team approach involving teachers, physiotherapists, and psychologists.

Three centres treated over 40 patients each, with good results—most patients improved in fatigue and physical functioning. The research found that while the manual was helpful, therapists still needed direct support from experts when starting out.

This study found that people who had shingles (herpes zoster) had a higher risk of developing ME/CFS compared to people who didn't have shingles. Researchers followed thousands of people over several years and found that those with a history of shingles were about 29% more likely to develop chronic fatigue syndrome, suggesting that viral infections like shingles may trigger ME/CFS in some people.

This study compared two different sets of criteria used to diagnose ME/CFS and looked at how severely the disease affected patients who met each definition. Researchers found that patients meeting the stricter International Consensus Criteria (ICC) definition had worse physical functioning, more pain, and greater disability than those who only met the older CDC criteria. This suggests that the ICC criteria identify a more severely affected group of patients within the broader ME/CFS population.

Cognitive functioning in people with chronic fatigue syndrome: a comparison between subjective and objective measures.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS who report memory and concentration problems actually perform worse on cognitive tests. Fifty people with ME/CFS and 50 healthy controls completed questionnaires about their cognitive difficulties and took standardized memory and attention tests. Surprisingly, while people with ME/CFS reported significantly more cognitive problems in daily life, both groups performed similarly on the objective tests, and reported problems didn't match test results in either group.

The researchers found that about 1 in 9 ME/CFS patients also had POTS, and these patients were younger, got sick more recently, and found it much harder to stand for long periods compared to ME/CFS patients without POTS.

Researchers measured attention, reaction time, muscle strength, sleep patterns, and immune markers (cytokines). They found that people with ME/CFS had cognitive problems, slower reactions, weaker grip strength, and higher levels of certain inflammatory markers—but their sleep time was actually similar to controls.

Researchers found that about half of patients had difficulties with attention and motor skills, while 40% struggled with processing information quickly and with executive functions like planning. The severity of fatigue and emotional factors were linked to some of these cognitive difficulties.

Researchers investigated whether two viruses (XMRV and pMLV) were present in people with ME/CFS, as had been suggested by earlier studies. They collected blood samples from people with ME/CFS and healthy people across five different U.S. locations and used sensitive testing methods to look for these viruses. They found no meaningful difference in virus detection between the two groups, and the virus sequences they did find appeared to be contamination from lab materials rather than real infections.

Effect of high dose vitamin C on Epstein-Barr viral infection.

This study looked at whether high-dose vitamin C given through an IV might help people with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, including those with ME/CFS. Researchers reviewed medical records of 178 patients who received vitamin C infusions and had elevated EBV antibodies. They found that patients who received these treatments showed lower levels of EBV antibodies over time, and that higher vitamin C levels in the blood were associated with lower viral markers.

They found significantly elevated neuroinflammation signals across multiple brain regions in ME/CFS patients, particularly in the cingulate cortex, thalamus, and brainstem — areas regulating fatigue and cognition.
