Using a sensitive new testing method that looked for multiple signs of XMRV infection, they found no difference in viral markers between the two groups, suggesting XMRV is not associated with ME/CFS.

The researchers found that about 65% of ME/CFS patients had active viral infections compared to only 13% of healthy people. Patients with active viral infections showed higher levels of inflammatory markers and experienced more severe symptoms, especially when infected with multiple viruses at once.

In this study, the same scientists who originally reported finding these viruses carefully re-examined blood samples from 147 ME/CFS patients and 146 healthy people without knowing which samples came from which group. They found no evidence that either virus was present in any of the samples, meaning the original finding could not be confirmed.

This study looked at fatigue in people who had been infected with Q fever (a bacterial infection) compared to people who hadn't had it. Researchers found that Q fever survivors reported much more fatigue than the control group, but very few met the strict criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). People with Q fever who had fatigue also reported more health worries, physical symptoms, and emotional stress than those without fatigue.

Data mining: comparing the empiric CFS to the Canadian ME/CFS case definition.

This study compared two different sets of diagnostic criteria used to identify ME/CFS patients. Researchers used a computer-based analysis technique to test which questions from patient surveys were most helpful in accurately diagnosing the illness. They found that the Canadian criteria correctly identified 87% of ME/CFS patients, while the older empiric criteria identified about 79%, suggesting the Canadian approach may be more effective for diagnosis.

Understanding long-term outcomes of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study followed people who were diagnosed with ME/CFS 25 years earlier and compared them to healthy people. Most participants (20 out of 25) no longer had an ME/CFS diagnosis, but surprisingly, they still experienced significantly more health problems and limitations than healthy controls. This suggests that even when people stop meeting the criteria for ME/CFS, they may not fully recover to their previous level of health.

This suggests that the words doctors use to describe an illness can influence how seriously it is viewed, even when describing the exact same condition.

Researchers measured multiple immune molecules called cytokines in the blood to see if they could identify a pattern that distinguishes people with post-infectious ME/CFS from those who fully recovered.

A simpler version of the tool designed for primary care settings worked better for this group.

Researchers tested 36 teens with ME/CFS and 43 recovered teens, all about 6 months after having infectious mononucleosis. Surprisingly, they found that similar numbers of both groups had difficulty with standing tolerance, suggesting this may not be a key difference between those who recover and those who develop ME/CFS.
