Researchers tested blood samples from 500 healthy people, 67 prostate cancer patients, and 100 ME/CFS patients in Japan to see if a virus called XMRV was linked to these conditions. They found some antibodies to XMRV in a small number of people (1.6-3.0%), but no clear evidence of active infection in any group, suggesting XMRV is not a cause of ME/CFS in Japan.

Migraine headaches in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS): comparison of two prospective cross-sectional studies.

This study found that headaches—especially migraines—are much more common in people with ME/CFS than in healthy people. Researchers studied two groups and found that 84% of people with ME/CFS experienced migraines, compared to only 5% of healthy controls. People with ME/CFS who had migraines with visual symptoms (aura) showed more severe dizziness, memory problems, and heart-related symptoms than those without aura.

Chronic fatigue syndrome: labels, meanings and consequences.

This study surveyed British neurologists to understand how they view ME/CFS and whether they consider it a neurological condition. The results revealed that 84% of neurologists did not view ME/CFS as a neurological disorder, even though it is officially classified as one in the ICD-10 medical coding system. The researchers discuss how the way we label and classify ME/CFS affects how doctors treat patients and how patients understand their own illness.

Sleep-stage dynamics in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome with or without fibromyalgia.

This study looked at sleep patterns in women with ME/CFS, comparing those with ME/CFS alone to those who also have fibromyalgia (FM). Researchers found that people with ME/CFS alone had trouble staying asleep and waking up too often from REM sleep, while those with both conditions showed different sleep problems including difficulty maintaining deeper sleep stages. These findings suggest that ME/CFS and fibromyalgia may involve different types of sleep disturbances.

Toxicokinetics of mercury after long-term repeated exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccine.

This study looked at whether mercury from a vaccine preservative (thimerosal) builds up in the blood of adults receiving repeated vaccine injections over weeks. Researchers found that while mercury levels briefly increased 1 day after each injection, they returned to normal within a few weeks and did not accumulate over time. The mercury was cleared from the body relatively quickly, similar to how the body handles other forms of mercury.

Cognitive impairment in fatigue and sleepiness associated conditions.

This study compared how fatigue and sleepiness affect thinking and memory. Researchers tested 15 people with ME/CFS, 15 people with sleep apnea, and 16 healthy controls using memory tests, attention tasks, and brain wave measurements. Both patient groups showed cognitive problems, though people with sleep apnea had slightly more difficulty with certain thinking tasks and movement speed.

An Italian study on health-related quality of life and fatigue in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and patients with chronic HCV virus infection: similarities and differences.

This Italian study compared fatigue and quality of life in 39 ME/CFS patients versus 49 people with chronic hepatitis C. Using standard questionnaires, researchers found that ME/CFS patients experienced significantly more severe fatigue and lower quality of life than hepatitis C patients. The study concludes that managing fatigue should be a priority for ME/CFS patients to help improve their overall well-being.

A natural history study of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This 10-year study followed 32 people from the community who had been diagnosed with ME/CFS to see how their condition changed over time. Researchers found that most people with ME/CFS remained quite ill, though a few improved or developed other conditions. A key symptom called post-exertional malaise—where physical activity makes symptoms much worse—was the best marker that distinguished people with ME/CFS from others.

This study looked at people who had severe SARS infection and were unable to return to work for over a year afterward. These patients experienced long-lasting fatigue, widespread muscle pain, weakness, depression, and poor sleep quality. Researchers found that their sleep patterns and symptoms were very similar to those seen in fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Symptom fluctuations and daily physical activity in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome: a case-control study.

This study tracked physical activity and daily symptoms in 67 women with ME/CFS compared to healthy women who were not very active. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients were generally less active overall, but surprisingly, on days when patients were more active, they experienced more symptoms and greater symptom fluctuations the same day and the next day. Conversely, patients had fewer symptom changes on days when they stayed more sedentary and spread their limited activity throughout the day.

This study looked at how common chronic illnesses and depression are together in older adults in Canada. Researchers found that people over 50 with long-term health conditions are much more likely to also have depression. Interestingly, conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, fibromyalgia, and migraines showed the strongest link with depression in seniors.

This study helps clarify whether XMRV is actually linked to disease or if earlier findings might have been false alarms.

Mitochondrial enzymes discriminate between mitochondrial disorders and chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether measurements of mitochondria (the energy-producing parts of cells) can help distinguish ME/CFS from true mitochondrial diseases. The researchers found that while people with ME/CFS have fewer mitochondria overall, the mitochondria that are present work normally. In contrast, people with actual mitochondrial disorders have mitochondria that don't function well, even when mitochondrial numbers are considered.

Researchers found that people with ME/CFS do less intense physical activity (like brisk walking or exercise) than healthy controls, even though they spend similar amounts of time sitting. The study also found that reduced physical activity was linked to problems with heart rate regulation in ME/CFS patients.

This study tested whether a virus called XMRV could be found in people with ME/CFS. Researchers used the same methods from earlier studies that had suggested a link between this virus and ME/CFS. They checked patient blood samples for the virus itself and for antibodies (immune response markers) to the virus. Their results found no evidence that XMRV is associated with ME/CFS in UK patients.

Therapist effects in routine psychotherapy practice: an account from chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether it matters which therapist treats patients with ME/CFS when they receive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Researchers tracked 374 ME/CFS patients treated by 12 different therapists in a specialized clinic and measured changes in fatigue and disability. They found that while patients improved overall, the individual therapist made almost no difference in outcomes—the patients' improvements were similar regardless of which qualified therapist treated them.

This study looked at perfectionism in ME/CFS patients and found that there are two different types: one that involves setting high personal standards (which wasn't harmful) and another involving excessive worry about mistakes and self-doubt (which was harmful). The harmful type of perfectionism was linked to worse fatigue and depression symptoms. Interestingly, depression appeared to be the main pathway through which this harmful perfectionism made fatigue worse.

The effect of exercise cessation on non-articular tenderness measures and quality of life in well-trained athletes.

This study looked at what happens to healthy athletes when they stop exercising for just one week. Researchers found that after 7 days without exercise, athletes developed increased body tenderness (similar to fibromyalgia pain) and reported lower quality of life. The findings suggest that lack of exercise might trigger symptoms similar to those seen in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

The relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder, illness cognitions, defence styles, fatigue severity and psychological well-being in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS have higher rates of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and whether trauma-related stress affects fatigue levels. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients did experience more PTSD symptoms and traumatic life events than healthy controls, but surprisingly, the severity of PTSD symptoms did not directly predict how severe their fatigue was. Instead, a sense of helplessness was more strongly linked to both fatigue and mental health problems.

Lack of Detection of Xenotropic Murine Leukemia Virus-Related Virus in HIV-1 Lymphoma Patients.

Researchers tested whether a virus called XMRV, which had been proposed as a possible cause of ME/CFS, was present in HIV-positive patients who developed lymphoma (a type of cancer). They checked blood samples from 26 patients using three different detection methods, but did not find any evidence of XMRV. This suggests that XMRV is not associated with lymphomas that develop in people with HIV.
