Neurocognitive and functional outcomes in persons recovering from West Nile virus illness.

This study looked at 54 people who had recovered from West Nile virus infection about 1.5 years after getting sick. Researchers tested their memory, thinking skills, and quality of life. They found that half of the mildly ill patients and three-quarters of those with more severe illness still had ongoing symptoms and problems with daily functioning, even though most performed normally on formal cognitive tests.

This study looked at data from over 40,000 Canadian adults to understand how anxiety disorders affect people with chronic illnesses, particularly women. The researchers found that women with chronic physical illnesses—including ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and digestive problems—are much more likely to also experience anxiety disorders. When anxiety and physical illness occur together, people report more disability in daily activities and higher rates of suicidal thoughts.

Among patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), about 59% reported meaningful improvements in their daily functioning after 6 or more appointments.

People with ME/CFS became exhausted much faster, at lower exercise levels, and showed lower oxygen and blood volume in their brain during and after exercise, suggesting that reduced blood flow to the brain may be part of what causes exercise problems in ME/CFS.

This study looked at a specific genetic variation in the serotonin transporter gene in people with temporomandibular disorder (TMD)—a condition affecting the jaw joint. Researchers compared the genes of 36 patients with TMD to healthy controls and found that people with TMD were more likely to carry certain genetic variants related to serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain. Since serotonin problems have been linked to chronic fatigue syndrome and similar conditions, this finding suggests genetics may play a role in TMD development.

Researchers tested whether measurements taken during moderate-intensity exercise could predict how much energy a person with ME/CFS could produce during their maximum effort. In 222 women with ME/CFS, oxygen use at moderate intensity correlated well with peak oxygen use, but the prediction had too much variation to be reliable for individual patients.

Alexithymia in adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether adolescents with ME/CFS have difficulty identifying and describing their emotions (a trait called alexithymia) more often than healthy teenagers. Researchers found that while some teens with ME/CFS did have this trait, it wasn't significantly different from healthy controls, and it didn't predict who would recover. The study suggests that difficulty with emotions is not a unique feature of ME/CFS in young people.

Perception versus polysomnographic assessment of sleep in CFS and non-fatigued control subjects: results from a population-based study.

People with ME/CFS commonly report that their sleep doesn't feel refreshing and that they have trouble sleeping, even though standard sleep tests don't always show obvious sleep problems. This study compared how 35 people with ME/CFS and 40 healthy people described their sleep quality against what their actual sleep looked like on overnight sleep monitoring. Interestingly, the sleep recordings looked similar between both groups, but ME/CFS patients were more accurate at noticing their actual sleep behavior, while healthy controls tended to overestimate how long it took them to fall asleep.

This study looked at whether fatigue and ME/CFS run in families by studying twins. Researchers asked over 1,000 pairs of identical twins and 800 pairs of fraternal twins about their fatigue symptoms. They found that in men, genetics played a bigger role in fatigue, while in women, life circumstances and personal experiences were more important.

ME/CFS patients often report feeling like they have poor sleep quality, even though doctors cannot always find obvious problems when measuring sleep objectively. This study compared how ME/CFS patients and healthy people rated their own sleep quality and found that ME/CFS patients consistently reported worse sleep, despite having similar sleep efficiency measurements. The poor sleep quality perception was somewhat linked to fatigue severity but not related to depression or anxiety symptoms.

This study examined whether a combination of acupuncture, moxibustion (a traditional Chinese medicine technique using heat), and psychological support could help people with chronic fatigue syndrome. Researchers treated 310 patients with this combined approach and found that most patients reported significant improvement in their symptoms. The results suggest this traditional medicine approach may be helpful for managing ME/CFS.

This study surveyed 156 women about persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD), a condition involving unwanted arousal sensations. Women with full PGAD were more likely to experience depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and chronic fatigue compared to women with milder symptoms or no condition. The researchers suggest that anxiety and worry about these sensations may play a role in making PGAD worse.

This suggests that immune cells in ME/CFS may have trouble becoming activated properly in response to challenges.

This study tested how the hearts of adolescents with ME/CFS respond to mild physical stress (tilting the body slightly upright for 15 minutes) compared to healthy teenagers. Researchers found that young people with ME/CFS had abnormal heart and blood vessel responses during this test—their hearts beat faster, their blood pressure increased more, and their stroke volume (amount of blood pumped per heartbeat) decreased more than in healthy controls. These differences suggest that ME/CFS involves problems with how the body regulates blood flow and heart function during even mild stress.

Researchers found that about 2.5% of adults aged 18-59 have the condition, which is higher than estimates from other parts of the United States. Interestingly, the disease affected men and women very differently depending on whether they lived in cities or rural areas.

A twin study of cognitive function in chronic fatigue syndrome: the effects of sudden illness onset.

This study compared 22 pairs of identical twins where one had ME/CFS and the other was healthy. Researchers gave both twins thinking and memory tests to see if ME/CFS affects the brain. Twins with ME/CFS had slower processing speed, weaker verbal memory, slower motor responses, and more difficulty with complex thinking tasks, even though they had the same genetic background as their healthy twin.

This suggests ME/CFS involves real inflammation in the body, not just psychological factors.

Researchers measured blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, and carbon dioxide levels in the blood. ME/CFS patients were more likely than healthy people to have abnormal responses, particularly low carbon dioxide levels (hypocapnia), which was linked to feeling more ill and short of breath.
