Neurally mediated hypotension in fatigued Gulf War veterans: a preliminary report.

This study tested whether fatigued Gulf War veterans have problems with blood pressure control when standing up quickly (a condition called neurally mediated hypotension), similar to what researchers have seen in ME/CFS patients. The researchers tilted 14 fatigued Gulf War veterans on a special table and compared their responses to two groups of unfatigued veterans and non-veterans. They found that fatigued veterans were more likely to experience dangerous drops in blood pressure during the test, suggesting their autonomic nervous system (the part that automatically controls heart rate and blood pressure) may not be working properly.

Screening for prolonged fatigue syndromes: validation of the SOFA scale.

This study developed and tested two screening tools (called SOFA/CFS and SOFA/GP) to help doctors identify patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and prolonged fatigue conditions. Researchers tested these tools with 770 CFS patients in specialist clinics and 1,593 people in regular primary care settings, and found that both instruments could reliably spot these fatigue syndromes. The study also showed that fatigue syndromes have distinct patterns that are separate from anxiety and depression, and these patterns remained stable over a 12-month follow-up.

Cerebral perfusion in chronic fatigue syndrome and depression.

Researchers used brain imaging to measure blood flow in different areas of the brain in people with ME/CFS, people with depression, and healthy volunteers. They found that people with ME/CFS had increased blood flow in certain deep brain structures (the thalamus and related areas), which was similar to what they saw in depressed patients. However, people with ME/CFS had a different pattern than depressed patients in other brain regions, suggesting these are related but distinct conditions.

Human herpesviruses 6 and 7 in chronic fatigue syndrome: a case-control study.

Researchers tested whether three common viruses (HHV-6A, HHV-6B, and HHV-7) might be linked to ME/CFS. They compared blood samples from 26 ME/CFS patients with 52 healthy people and looked for signs of active or dormant virus infection. The study found no meaningful differences between the two groups, suggesting these particular viruses are not associated with ME/CFS.

Salivary gland changes in chronic fatigue syndrome: a case-controlled preliminary histologic study.

Researchers examined tiny salivary glands in the lips of 11 ME/CFS patients and compared them to healthy controls. They found that ME/CFS patients had various changes in these glands, including swelling, scarring, and immune cell infiltration. Most notably, ME/CFS patients had significantly more mast cells (immune cells) in their salivary glands than controls, suggesting these glands may be damaged in ME/CFS.

The role of personality in the development and perpetuation of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study compared personality traits between 44 people with ME/CFS and 44 healthy people without the illness. Researchers measured perfectionism (setting very high standards), self-esteem (how people value themselves), and emotional control. People with ME/CFS showed higher levels of perfectionism and lower self-esteem, but emotional control was similar between groups.

This study examined hormone levels in 73 people with ME/CFS compared to 21 healthy people. Researchers found that people with ME/CFS had lower growth hormone (GH) levels, especially at night and when their body was stressed by low blood sugar. They also had higher levels of prolactin and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), suggesting their brain chemistry may be imbalanced. These hormone changes were associated with increased belly fat in ME/CFS patients.

Chronic fatigue syndrome: a woman's dilemma.

This study looked at how ME/CFS affects women's lives by interviewing 22 women and surveying 42 others about their experiences. The researchers found that the illness significantly disrupts women's work, relationships, and how they see themselves. The study highlights that living with ME/CFS and managing its symptoms has a major impact on quality of life beyond just the medical aspects of the disease.

Co-existence of chronic fatigue syndrome with fibromyalgia syndrome in the general population. A controlled study.

This study looked at how often fibromyalgia and ME/CFS occur together in people from the general population. Researchers found that about 58% of women with fibromyalgia also met the criteria for ME/CFS, compared to much lower rates in people with other types of pain. People who had both conditions reported worse overall health and more symptoms than those with fibromyalgia alone.

Magnesium status and parameters of the oxidant-antioxidant balance in patients with chronic fatigue: effects of supplementation with magnesium.

This study looked at whether magnesium deficiency and oxidative stress (cellular damage from unstable molecules) are connected in people with chronic fatigue. When these patients took magnesium supplements, some improved antioxidant markers and vitamin E levels, suggesting magnesium may help protect cells from damage.

While the size of the hippocampus was normal in ME/CFS patients, a specific chemical marker called N-acetylaspartate was significantly lower in the right side of the hippocampus compared to healthy people. This suggests there may be subtle differences in how brain cells are functioning in ME/CFS, even when the brain structure looks normal.

The study suggests these conditions may be connected in some way we don't yet fully understand.
