No findings of enteroviruses in Swedish patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested 34 Swedish patients with ME/CFS to see if a virus called enterovirus might be causing their illness. They looked for the virus in stool samples, blood, spinal fluid, and muscle tissue using several different detection methods. The study found no evidence of enterovirus infection in any of the patients tested.

Researchers surveyed hospitals across Japan in 1992 to understand how many people have ME/CFS and how it spreads. They found that about 0.85 cases per 100,000 people were diagnosed that year, with slightly more women affected than men. The number of cases appeared to be growing from 1992 to 1993, and a small percentage of cases started after an infection.

This study examined whether certain chemicals in urine could be linked to the different symptoms ME/CFS patients experience, such as fatigue, cognitive problems, muscle pain, and digestive issues. They discovered that two specific urine metabolites—CFSUM1 and beta-alanine—were strongly associated with symptom severity, suggesting these could eventually be used as biological markers for diagnosing ME/CFS.

This study followed over 1,900 people in primary care and found that most individuals with ME/CFS also had a current mental health condition like depression or anxiety. The researchers discovered that people with chronic fatigue were much more likely to have psychiatric disorders (60-78%) compared to those without fatigue (19-31%). While the study suggests a strong link between psychiatric conditions and ME/CFS, it does not explain whether one causes the other.

Researchers found that all groups struggled with unemployment and visited many doctors, but people with both ME/CFS and fibromyalgia together had the hardest time staying employed. The results show that these conditions cause serious disruption to people's lives and lead to significant healthcare costs.

Researchers tested the urine of 20 ME/CFS patients and 45 healthy controls to look for chemical differences. They found that ME/CFS patients had different levels of several substances in their urine, particularly one called CFSUM1 and beta-alanine, which were higher in patients with more severe symptoms. These findings suggest ME/CFS may have measurable biological markers that could help identify the condition.

This study looked at 71 people with chronic fatigue to understand how anxiety about health (hypochondriasis) affects their quality of life. The researchers found that people who worried more about their health and had more physical symptoms reported worse quality of life, especially those diagnosed with ME/CFS. Depression also played a role in this relationship.

This study looked at whether the internal body clocks of ME/CFS patients work normally. Researchers measured body temperature and melatonin (a sleep hormone) rhythms in 20 ME/CFS patients and 17 healthy people. They found that in healthy people, body temperature and melatonin rhythms are normally synchronized, but in ME/CFS patients, these two rhythms were disconnected from each other—like two clocks running at different times.

Psychosocial risk factors for chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome following presumed viral illness: a case-control study.

This study looked at 64 people who either developed lasting fatigue or didn't after a viral illness, examining their mental health, stress levels, and coping strategies. The researchers found that people who developed chronic fatigue were more likely to have had past mental health problems and used avoidance-based coping methods. Interestingly, those who met the full criteria for ME/CFS had severe fatigue but didn't necessarily have more psychiatric issues than others with chronic fatigue.

Insulin-like growth factor-I (somatomedin C) levels in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Researchers tested whether people with ME/CFS have lower levels of a growth hormone called IGF-I, which had previously been found to be low in fibromyalgia patients. They measured IGF-I levels in 15 people with ME/CFS, 15 with both ME/CFS and fibromyalgia, 27 with fibromyalgia alone, and 15 healthy volunteers. The study found no significant differences in IGF-I levels between any of the patient groups and healthy controls, suggesting that low IGF-I may not be a key feature of ME/CFS.

Chronic fatigue complaints in primary care: incidence and diagnostic patterns.

This study looked at how doctors in a primary care clinic evaluate patients who complain of chronic fatigue. Researchers reviewed 425 patient charts and found that when patients mentioned chronic fatigue, doctors often did not perform complete evaluations—skipping important tests, mental health screening, and sleep history questions. Most doctors diagnosed patients with depression or general fatigue rather than investigating the chronic fatigue complaint thoroughly.

Researchers found that ME patients wanted four main things: a clear medical diagnosis, time to rest, specific treatments, and social support. However, the study found that there was no agreement among doctors and experts about what ME is, making it very difficult for the health system to plan appropriate care.

This 1996 study examined whether high-dose vitamin C infusions, with or without a hormone called DHEA added, could help treat ME/CFS. Researchers treated 313 patients with chronic pneumonia-like illness that matched ME/CFS symptoms, often combined with antibiotics. The authors found that the combination of two types of vitamin C infusions worked better than one type alone, suggesting that low levels of certain body hormones might play a role in ME/CFS.

This study looked at people who had Lyme disease and continued to have fatigue, joint pain, and memory problems even after antibiotic treatment. Researchers compared 23 of these patients to 23 people who recovered fully from Lyme disease. The group with ongoing symptoms performed worse on memory and concentration tests, reported more sleep and mood problems, and showed signs of greater emotional distress.

Chronic fatigue and minor psychiatric morbidity after viral meningitis: a controlled study.

Researchers followed 83 patients who had viral meningitis and compared them to 76 people who had other viral infections. They found that about 12.6% of all participants developed chronic fatigue after their illness—higher than expected. Interestingly, having meningitis specifically was not a stronger risk factor than other viral infections; instead, people who took longer to recover and those with a history of psychiatric illness were more likely to develop chronic fatigue.

Viral serologies in patients with chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers tested 548 people with chronic fatigue to see if they had unusually high levels of antibodies to 13 common viruses, since ME/CFS often starts suddenly after a viral illness. They compared antibody levels in patients with chronic fatigue to healthy controls and found no consistent differences between the groups, suggesting these particular virus tests are not helpful in diagnosing or understanding chronic fatigue.

This study compared fatigue in three groups: people with MS, people with ME/CFS, and healthy people. The researchers found that both MS and ME/CFS patients experienced severe fatigue that affected their daily life. Interestingly, psychological factors like how much someone focuses on their body sensations and whether they feel in control of their symptoms seemed to influence fatigue severity in both diseases.

Chronic fatigue in the community: 'a question of attribution'.

This study looked at 38 people with chronic fatigue who believed they had ME, comparing them to two similar groups who attributed their tiredness to psychological or social causes. After 18 months, people who believed they had ME were more disabled in daily activities like work and socializing, even though they were less emotionally distressed. Interestingly, people who attributed their fatigue to social reasons seemed to do better overall.
