The Impact of a Structured Exercise Programme upon Cognitive Function in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients.

This study looked at people visiting sleep clinics who reported excessive daytime sleepiness and found that 21% of them also met criteria for ME/CFS (systemic exertion intolerance disease). People with both conditions reported more severe fatigue and were less likely to benefit from standard wake-promoting medications compared to those with only sleep disorders. The findings suggest that ME/CFS frequently occurs alongside sleep disorders and may make treatment more difficult.

Increased risk of chronic fatigue syndrome following psoriasis: a nationwide population-based cohort study.

This study found that people with psoriasis (a skin condition involving immune system dysfunction) have a higher chance of developing ME/CFS compared to people without psoriasis. Researchers followed over 13,000 people in Taiwan for several years and found that those with psoriasis were about 1.5 times more likely to develop ME/CFS. Interestingly, people who received certain psoriasis treatments appeared to have a lower risk of developing ME/CFS.

This study looked at what happens in the body during post-exertional malaise (PEM)—the exhaustion and worsening of symptoms that ME/CFS patients experience after physical or mental activity. Researchers measured chemical changes in blood and urine over 7 days in 35 ME/CFS patients who reported PEM and compared them to healthy controls. They found that during PEM, the body shows signs of increased metabolism (burning energy faster), low levels of a molecule called hypoxanthine, and problems with how cells use and process energy, along with evidence that the body is breaking down muscle protein.

Treatment Avenues in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Split-gender Pharmacogenomic Study of Gene-expression Modules.

Researchers studied blood samples from 33 ME/CFS patients and 21 healthy people to look for differences in how their genes were working. They found that ME/CFS appears to involve problems with the immune system (the body's defense mechanism) and how cells produce energy. By matching these gene differences with existing FDA-approved drugs, they identified immunosuppressant medications as potential candidates that might help reduce ME/CFS symptoms.

This study tested whether a 4-day treatment program combining education, cognitive therapy, mindfulness, physical activity, and writing could help people with ME/CFS. Over 300 patients participated and were followed for one year. About 80% of patients showed meaningful improvement in fatigue and physical functioning that lasted throughout the year, and nearly all patients were satisfied with the program.

People with unexplained fatigue reported significantly lower quality of life, especially in physical functioning, compared to those with explained fatigue.

Researchers found that about one-fourth of Gulf War Illness patients developed an unusual heart rate response after exercise: their heart raced when they stood up, even though this didn't happen before exercise. This temporary condition, called the START phenotype, appeared around 2 hours after exercise and was different from a similar condition called POTS that some patients had continuously. This discovery suggests that exercise can trigger a specific cardiovascular problem in some Gulf War Illness patients.

Physical Examination for Men and Women With Urologic Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome: A MAPP (Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain) Network Study.

Researchers tested whether hand grip strength could be a useful tool for diagnosing ME/CFS and measuring how severe the condition is. This simple, objective test may help doctors better diagnose ME/CFS and track how patients are doing over time.

The findings suggest that ME/CFS may work differently than this model assumes.

The researchers discovered that poor sleep was strongly linked to worse pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and lower quality of life overall. Several factors—including pain intensity, mood problems, fibromyalgia, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction—were particularly associated with sleep difficulties.

Researchers used insurance billing records and computer analysis to estimate how many Americans have ME/CFS. They found that between 1.7 and 3.4 million people in the U.S. may have been diagnosed with ME/CFS, making it more common than many people realize. The study also showed that ME/CFS costs patients far more in medical expenses than other serious diseases like lupus or multiple sclerosis.

Restricted Spatial Windows of Visibility in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME).

This study looked at how ME affects vision by testing how well people can see contrast (the difference between light and dark areas). Researchers tested 19 people with ME and 19 healthy people by asking them to identify faint striped patterns. People with ME had more difficulty seeing these patterns, especially at lower levels of detail, suggesting that ME may affect how the eyes and brain process visual information.
