The role of hypocortisolism in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at stress hormone levels (cortisol) in adolescents with ME/CFS by measuring saliva samples. Teenagers with ME/CFS had lower cortisol levels than healthy peers, and those who improved with treatment showed their cortisol levels normalize, while those who didn't recover showed little change. The findings suggest that restoration of normal cortisol production during treatment may be linked to better outcomes.

This study tested whether taking a multivitamin and mineral supplement could help women with ME/CFS feel better. Thirty-eight women took the supplement for 2 months, and researchers measured changes in fatigue, sleep, headaches, and other symptoms. Most symptoms improved notably, including less fatigue and better sleep, though overall quality of life scores did not change.

This study measured stress hormone (cortisol) levels in teenagers with ME/CFS compared to healthy teenagers. Teenagers with ME/CFS had lower cortisol levels throughout the day than healthy peers. After cognitive behavioural treatment, cortisol levels in the ME/CFS group returned to normal, suggesting the hormonal difference may be reversible.

Neuropsychological impairment in female patients with chronic fatigue syndrome: a preliminary study.

This study looked at thinking and memory problems in 68 women with ME/CFS using standardized cognitive tests. Researchers found that about half of patients had difficulties with attention and motor skills, while 40% struggled with processing information quickly and with executive functions like planning. The severity of fatigue and emotional factors were linked to some of these cognitive difficulties.

After a large bacterial infection outbreak in Germany in 2011, researchers followed patients for 6 months to see how they recovered emotionally and physically. They found that nearly half of the patients experienced persistent, significant fatigue, and many reported depression, trauma-related symptoms, and lower quality of life than healthy people. Patients who had experienced previous trauma, had anxious personalities, or lacked social support were most likely to have ongoing problems.

Cognitive functioning in people with chronic fatigue syndrome: a comparison between subjective and objective measures.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS who report memory and concentration problems actually perform worse on cognitive tests. Fifty people with ME/CFS and 50 healthy controls completed questionnaires about their cognitive difficulties and took standardized memory and attention tests. Surprisingly, while people with ME/CFS reported significantly more cognitive problems in daily life, both groups performed similarly on the objective tests, and reported problems didn't match test results in either group.

Increased risk of chronic fatigue syndrome following herpes zoster: a population-based study.

This study found that people who had shingles (herpes zoster) had a higher risk of developing ME/CFS compared to people who didn't have shingles. Researchers followed thousands of people over several years and found that those with a history of shingles were about 29% more likely to develop chronic fatigue syndrome, suggesting that viral infections like shingles may trigger ME/CFS in some people.

This study looked at whether certain harmful substances in the blood of ME/CFS patients were linked to how sick they felt. Researchers gave 76 patients with ME/CFS supplements designed to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, and found that patients whose levels of these harmful substances decreased the most—particularly those related to fat oxidation—reported feeling better. However, another type of harmful substance (related to nitrosative stress) didn't show this same connection to improvement.

This study asked Australian pediatricians how they diagnose and treat children with ME/CFS. Only 39% of the doctors who responded said they actually diagnose and manage this condition, and they used very different approaches from each other. The doctors found that children with ME/CFS often also have anxiety, depression, and other conditions, and most used a team approach involving teachers, physiotherapists, and psychologists.

This study examined nearly 5,300 patients with suspected immune problems and found that 7% had abnormally low levels of IgE, an antibody that normally helps fight infections. Among patients with this IgE deficiency, the most common symptoms were recurrent respiratory infections (63%), followed by digestive problems (13%), autoimmune conditions (10%), allergies (7%), and chronic fatigue (7%). The researchers concluded that IgE deficiency is more common than previously recognized and may contribute to various health problems.

Researchers compared three groups: people with ME/CFS alone, people with ME/CFS plus fibromyalgia, and healthy controls. They found that people with both ME/CFS and fibromyalgia had slower muscle recovery than healthy people, but those with ME/CFS alone did not show this difference. This suggests ME/CFS may affect people differently depending on whether they also have fibromyalgia.

This study compared two different sets of criteria used to diagnose ME/CFS and looked at how severely the disease affected patients who met each definition. Researchers found that patients meeting the stricter International Consensus Criteria (ICC) definition had worse physical functioning, more pain, and greater disability than those who only met the older CDC criteria. This suggests that the ICC criteria identify a more severely affected group of patients within the broader ME/CFS population.

Influence of graded exercise therapy on anxiety levels and health-related quality of life in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested whether graded exercise therapy (GET)—a program of gradually increasing physical activity—could help 26 ME/CFS patients feel better and worry less. After 12 weeks of GET, patients reported improved energy levels and reduced anxiety, particularly trait anxiety (how anxious people generally feel). The study also found that anxiety and quality of life are closely connected: patients with higher anxiety had lower quality of life, and vice versa.

Predictors of Post-Infectious Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Adolescents.

This study followed over 300 teenagers who had infectious mononucleosis to see which ones developed ME/CFS afterward. Researchers measured various factors at baseline, including how tired the teens felt, how many days they spent in bed, stress levels, and mood. The key finding was that the severity of the initial mono illness—particularly how long teens stayed in bed—was the strongest predictor of who would develop ME/CFS within 6 months.

Improved management of primary chronic fatigue syndrome with the supplement French oak wood extract (Robuvit®): a pilot, registry evaluation.

This small study tested whether a supplement made from French oak wood extract (Robuvit®) could help people with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) when combined with a structured management plan. About half of the 91 participants received the supplement for 6 months while the other half followed the management plan alone. The supplement group showed greater improvements in fatigue symptoms and mood compared to the management-only group, and no side effects were reported.
