Researchers tested milk samples from 316 dairy farms in Indiana to see how common a bacterium called Coxiella burnetii is in cattle herds. This bacterium causes Q fever, which can lead to chronic fatigue in people. They found that over 61% of Indiana dairy herds had evidence of this bacterium in their milk, suggesting it is widespread among cattle.

Many people with ME/CFS struggle with memory and thinking problems. This small study tested whether spending 30-45 minutes a day for 5 weeks doing computerized memory exercises on a computer could help. Nine out of eleven patients who completed the training showed real improvements in working memory and attention, while a control group of patients who didn't do the training showed no improvement.

This finding could help guide rehabilitation programs that focus on movement quality rather than just building strength.

This study tested how automatically women with ME/CFS can walk while doing other things at the same time. Researchers asked women with ME/CFS and healthy women to walk, close their eyes, and solve a math problem. Most women with ME/CFS stopped walking when they had to do the math problem with their eyes closed, while most healthy women kept walking. This suggests that walking requires more conscious effort and attention in ME/CFS patients than in healthy people.

Researchers surveyed over 59,000 Canadians and found that about 1.4% have ME/CFS and 1.5% have fibromyalgia, with some people having both conditions. People with these conditions reported significantly worse health than those without them, especially when they had other illnesses at the same time.

Plasma cytokine expression in adolescent chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study measured inflammation markers called cytokines in the blood of 120 adolescents with ME/CFS and compared them to 68 healthy young people. Despite CFS patients reporting significantly more fatigue and symptoms suggesting inflammation, the researchers found no differences in cytokine levels or inflammation patterns between the two groups. This suggests that the fatigue and symptoms in adolescent ME/CFS may not be caused by the type of low-grade inflammation in the blood that researchers had previously suspected.

This study found that fatigue is very common and severely disabling in people with mitochondrial disease. About 62% of patients reported excessive fatigue, and 32% experienced severe fatigue that significantly limited their daily activities—levels comparable to fatigue in ME/CFS patients. The researchers surveyed 132 patients and compared their fatigue levels to healthy people and ME/CFS patients to understand how widespread and serious this problem is.

Associations Between Cognitive Performance and Pain in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Comorbidity with Fibromyalgia Does Matter.

They found that the type of pain problem matters: in patients with both conditions, a specific pain-processing difference predicted thinking problems, while in ME/CFS-only patients, reported pain levels predicted thinking problems.

Researchers found that patients showed slightly delayed brain responses to cognitive tasks, and these delays were linked to how long they'd had the disease and how inflamed their salivary glands were. Patients with both Sjögren's syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome showed different patterns than those with Sjögren's syndrome alone.

The Self beyond Somatic Symptoms: A Narrative Approach to Self-Experience in Adolescent Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Researchers compared 42 teenagers with ME/CFS to teenagers with arthritis and healthy peers, and found that those with ME/CFS reported feeling more powerless, isolated, and unable to achieve their goals, while also having lower self-esteem and mental health scores. The findings suggest that ME/CFS deeply affects not just the body, but how young people see and value themselves.

Childhood trauma in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: focus on personality disorders and psychopathology.

Researchers surveyed 166 ME/CFS patients using questionnaires about their childhood experiences and current mental health. They found that about one-third had experienced childhood trauma, and nearly half had signs of a personality disorder. Importantly, emotional trauma (like neglect or abuse) was more strongly connected to personality disorders than physical trauma.

ME/CFS patients had the highest rates of mood and anxiety problems among the three conditions studied.

This study tracked over 200,000 people for 4-6 years to see if allergies and atopic conditions (like asthma, eczema, and hay fever) increase the risk of developing ME/CFS. This suggests a possible link between the body's allergic responses and the development of ME/CFS.

This study compared 16 people with ME/CFS to 14 healthy controls to understand fatigue better. Researchers measured attention, reaction time, muscle strength, sleep patterns, and immune markers (cytokines). They found that people with ME/CFS had cognitive problems, slower reactions, weaker grip strength, and higher levels of certain inflammatory markers—but their sleep time was actually similar to controls.
