Researchers found that about 26 people per 100,000 develop ME/CFS each year, and women are diagnosed about three times more often than men. Interestingly, the disease peaks twice: once in teenagers and again in people in their 30s, which suggests that different life stages or age-related factors may influence who gets ME/CFS.

This study looked at whether high-dose vitamin C given through an IV might help people with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, including those with ME/CFS. Researchers reviewed medical records of 178 patients who received vitamin C infusions and had elevated EBV antibodies. They found that patients who received these treatments showed lower levels of EBV antibodies over time, and that higher vitamin C levels in the blood were associated with lower viral markers.

Adolescent chronic fatigue syndrome and somatoform disorders: a prospective clinical study.

This study followed 50 teenagers with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or similar conditions for one year while they received treatment from a team of different specialists. Both groups of teens improved in their physical abilities and emotional well-being over the first 4 months, and these improvements lasted through 12 months. Teenagers with CFS had more persistent physical limitations than those with other similar conditions, especially if their illness started after a physical trigger like an infection.

Cognitive functioning in people with chronic fatigue syndrome: a comparison between subjective and objective measures.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS who report memory and concentration problems actually perform worse on cognitive tests. Fifty people with ME/CFS and 50 healthy controls completed questionnaires about their cognitive difficulties and took standardized memory and attention tests. Surprisingly, while people with ME/CFS reported significantly more cognitive problems in daily life, both groups performed similarly on the objective tests, and reported problems didn't match test results in either group.

Researchers found that about 1 in 6 IBS patients had a family history suggesting maternal inheritance, and certain DNA variations were more common in these patients. This suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction may explain IBS symptoms in some people.

This study looked at 136 people in the UK with postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS)—a condition where your heart rate increases too much when you stand up—and found that it causes serious tiredness and functional problems, especially in young women. The researchers compared two groups of PoTS patients and found their symptoms and quality-of-life impacts were similar to those in people with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Importantly, there was no consistent treatment approach across patients, with some taking no medication and others on different drug combinations.

They found that nearly 58% of MS patients experienced severe fatigue, and these patients had lower serotonin levels that seemed connected to their MS symptoms.

This study tested a new automated machine system that measures antinuclear antibodies (ANA)—proteins the immune system sometimes makes that can indicate autoimmune diseases. Researchers found that the machine's measurement of fluorescence brightness (how bright the antibody signals are) correlates with disease likelihood: brighter signals were more likely to indicate rheumatic diseases like lupus or Sjögren's syndrome. This automated brightness measurement could help doctors better interpret ANA test results.

Short-term effect of aerobic exercise on symptoms in multiple sclerosis and chronic fatigue syndrome: a pilot study.

Researchers wanted to see if 15 minutes of moderate cycling exercise would worsen symptoms in people with ME/CFS or MS. They compared 8 people with each condition to 8 healthy volunteers, measuring pain, fatigue, and physical function before exercise and at several time points up to 24 hours after. The good news: a single 15-minute cycling session did not cause lasting increases in pain or worsening of physical function in either patient group.

Increased risk of chronic fatigue syndrome following herpes zoster: a population-based study.

This study found that people who had shingles (herpes zoster) had a higher risk of developing ME/CFS compared to people who didn't have shingles. Researchers followed thousands of people over several years and found that those with a history of shingles were about 29% more likely to develop chronic fatigue syndrome, suggesting that viral infections like shingles may trigger ME/CFS in some people.

Improved management of primary chronic fatigue syndrome with the supplement French oak wood extract (Robuvit®): a pilot, registry evaluation.

This small study tested whether a supplement made from French oak wood extract (Robuvit®) could help people with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) when combined with a structured management plan. About half of the 91 participants received the supplement for 6 months while the other half followed the management plan alone. The supplement group showed greater improvements in fatigue symptoms and mood compared to the management-only group, and no side effects were reported.

Researchers gave them a supplement called idebenon for 6 months and found it reduced their fatigue, tiredness, and depression. While this is interesting, it's important to note this study focused on MS patients, not ME/CFS patients, though both conditions involve fatigue.

This study looked at patients with ME/CFS to see how many also have POTS (a condition where heart rate increases too much when standing). The researchers found that about 1 in 9 ME/CFS patients also had POTS, and these patients were younger, got sick more recently, and found it much harder to stand for long periods compared to ME/CFS patients without POTS.

Researchers measured attention, reaction time, muscle strength, sleep patterns, and immune markers (cytokines). They found that people with ME/CFS had cognitive problems, slower reactions, weaker grip strength, and higher levels of certain inflammatory markers—but their sleep time was actually similar to controls.

This study looked at whether community mental health centres could successfully offer cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) to ME/CFS patients using a training manual and support. Three centres treated over 40 patients each, with good results—most patients improved in fatigue and physical functioning. The research found that while the manual was helpful, therapists still needed direct support from experts when starting out.
