Fatigue after breast cancer and in chronic fatigue syndrome: similarities and differences.

This study compared 57 women with ME/CFS to 57 women who had breast cancer and were experiencing severe fatigue after treatment. Researchers measured fatigue, physical activity, mood, sleep, and concentration using questionnaires, tests, and activity monitors worn for 12 days. While both groups experienced significant fatigue, ME/CFS patients generally had more severe symptoms overall, though some breast cancer survivors reported similar problems with sleep and concentration.

Chronic fatigue following infection by Coxiella burnetii (Q fever): ten-year follow-up of the 1989 UK outbreak cohort.

This study followed people who were exposed to Q fever (a bacterial infection) during an outbreak in the UK in 1989 and checked on them 10 years later. Compared to people who were never exposed to Q fever, those who had been infected were much more likely to experience ongoing fatigue and to meet criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome. However, the study couldn't determine whether this fatigue was caused by the infection still being present in their bodies or by psychological effects from years of medical follow-up.

Perception of cognitive performance in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at how accurately people with ME/CFS judge their own mental performance. When patients with ME/CFS completed a challenging thinking task, they consistently thought they did worse than they actually did, even though their actual performance matched healthy people's performance. This gap between what they thought they could do and what they actually accomplished was linked to how mentally tired and fatigued the task made them feel.

The Mid-Atlantic Twin Registry.

The Mid-Atlantic Twin Registry is a large database of over 51,000 twin pairs born in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina between 1913 and 2000. Researchers use this registry to study many health conditions, including chronic fatigue syndrome, by comparing identical and fraternal twins to understand which health problems may run in families or be inherited. The registry carefully protects participant privacy and allows qualified researchers to recruit twins for specific studies.

After multidisciplinary treatment, patients who developed ME/CFS after infection showed better improvement in symptoms and were more likely to return to work. Importantly, a marker of immune function called NK cell activity also showed more improvement in the post-infectious group, suggesting their bodies may respond differently to treatment.

This small study tested whether an antiviral medication called valacyclovir could help ME/CFS patients who had persistent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Researchers gave 25 patients valacyclovir for 6 months and found that those with only EBV infection showed improvement in heart function and energy levels, but those with both EBV and cytomegalovirus infections did not improve.

Researchers tested whether bacteria in the bloodstream might be linked to ME/CFS by analyzing blood samples from people with ME/CFS and healthy controls. They found that healthy people had more detectable bacterial DNA in their blood than ME/CFS patients did, and no unique or unusual bacteria were found in either group. This suggests that a specific bacterial infection is unlikely to be a primary cause of ME/CFS.

Blood volume and its relation to peak O(2) consumption and physical activity in patients with chronic fatigue.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS have lower blood volume (the amount of fluid circulating in their bodies) and whether this might explain their exercise problems. Researchers compared 17 ME/CFS patients with 17 healthy controls, measuring blood volume and fitness capacity. They found that ME/CFS patients had significantly reduced exercise capacity and a trend toward lower blood volume, and these two measurements were strongly related to each other.

Illness experience, depression, and anxiety in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at depression and anxiety in people with ME/CFS and found two important factors. When doctors didn't believe in or validate patients' illness, patients had higher depression and anxiety. Interestingly, patients who believed that resting and limiting physical activity would help them recover had lower depression and anxiety scores, possibly because they felt more in control of their condition.

Caring for a relative with chronic fatigue syndrome: difficulties, cognition and acceptance over time.

This study spoke with 17 family members who care for people with ME/CFS to understand how the illness affects their lives. Surprisingly, many caregivers said their own daily lives weren't drastically changed, even though they all developed specific ways to cope and manage stress. Over time, caregivers learned to accept the illness, though this acceptance felt more like resignation than genuine understanding or appreciation of what the illness truly means.

Prevalence of allergen-specific IgE among patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested 50 ME/CFS patients for allergies by measuring specific immune proteins called allergen-specific IgE in their blood. Contrary to earlier patient surveys suggesting very high allergy rates, only 36% of ME/CFS patients had detectable allergic antibodies to common allergens like dust mites, pollen, and foods. This rate was similar to what researchers find in the general healthy population, suggesting that allergies may not be uniquely associated with ME/CFS.

This study measured how blood flow to the brain changes when young people with ME/CFS stand up, compared to healthy controls. Researchers found that many ME/CFS patients—especially those who feel dizzy or have a racing heart when standing—did not get the normal quick boost of oxygen to their brain that healthy people do. This suggests that problems with brain blood flow during position changes may be connected to ME/CFS symptoms.

This study measured how sensitive people's sinuses and skin are to pressure pain across different groups: healthy people, those with sinus infections or allergies, and people with ME/CFS. The researchers found that people with ME/CFS had much more sensitive sinuses and skin overall compared to healthy people, suggesting that ME/CFS causes widespread pain sensitivity rather than actual sinus infection.

Researchers tested blood samples from ME/CFS patients and healthy controls for specific antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV), a common virus. They found that 16 ME/CFS patients had unique antibodies to two CMV proteins (p52 and CM2) that were not found in 77 control subjects, including other ME/CFS patients and healthy people. This suggests these antibodies might be a specific marker for a subset of ME/CFS patients and could indicate an ongoing or incomplete CMV infection in this group.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have reduced oxygen processing ability compared to healthy people. Researchers had 33 ME/CFS patients and 33 matched healthy controls perform exercise tests on stationary bikes while measuring heart rate and oxygen use. The results showed that ME/CFS patients had normal oxygen uptake capacity similar to sedentary healthy people of the same age and gender, contrary to what some earlier studies had reported.

This study looked at whether paying too much attention to bodily sensations and reporting many physical symptoms might slow down how quickly people with ME/CFS can process information and react to tasks. Researchers measured how fast patients could respond to simple tests and found that people who were highly aware of their body sensations reported more symptoms and performed more slowly on reaction time tests. The study suggests that increased attention to the body may be partly responsible for the cognitive slowing that people with ME/CFS experience.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have actual problems with memory and thinking skills, or whether the difficulty they experience is mainly related to depression, anxiety, or fatigue. Researchers compared 23 people with ME/CFS to 23 healthy people using both objective tests (like memory tasks) and subjective reports (how people felt their thinking was affected). The findings showed that on actual cognitive tests, people with ME/CFS performed just as well as healthy controls, though they reported feeling that their thinking was worse.

Prognosis of chronic fatigue in a community-based sample.

Researchers followed up with people from a large community study to see which factors predict whether chronic fatigue gets better or worse over time. They found that how severe fatigue was at the start, and especially whether exercise made symptoms worse for 24 hours or more (a symptom called postexertional malaise), were the strongest predictors of whether someone would still have chronic fatigue years later.

[Utilization of national insurance in connection with functional somatic disorders].

This study looked at how much money Norway's national insurance system spent on people with chronic fatigue syndrome and other similar long-term conditions in the year 2000. Researchers found that these conditions caused about 3% of all sick leave taken by workers and affected about 6% of people newly approved for disability payments. The study shows that these conditions, particularly fibromyalgia, have a significant financial impact on healthcare systems.

Symptom occurrence in persons with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study compared symptoms between people with ME/CFS, people with depression, and healthy controls to understand which symptoms are specific to ME/CFS. The researchers found that certain pain symptoms (headaches, sore throat, joint and muscle pain) were common in ME/CFS but also appeared in depression. However, ME/CFS patients uniquely experienced widespread muscle weakness and various heart, lung, and nervous system symptoms that weren't seen in the other groups.
