Screening instruments for psychiatric morbidity in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study measured cortisol (a stress hormone) in saliva from women with ME/CFS, women with depression, and healthy women to see if cortisol levels differed between groups. Researchers found that women with ME/CFS had lower cortisol levels, especially in the evening and morning, compared to both depressed and healthy women. This suggests that ME/CFS involves different biological changes than depression.

Many people with ME/CFS report feeling like they have a low body temperature or mild fever, but this study found that their actual core body temperature is normal. Researchers continuously measured body temperature every 5 minutes for 24 hours in people with ME/CFS and compared them to healthy people, those with allergies, and those with depression. All groups had similar normal temperatures and similar daily temperature patterns.

This study tested whether a comprehensive treatment program combining medical care, psychiatric treatment, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (talk therapy focusing on thoughts and behaviors) could help people with ME/CFS. Fifty-one patients received this treatment, which included supervised exercise, sleep strategies, activity planning, and therapy. The results showed that about 61% returned to work or functioned at a work-like level, while 33 months later, those who completed treatment maintained their improvements, whereas untreated patients rarely improved.

Reproductive correlates of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study compared reproductive and menstrual histories in women with ME/CFS to healthy women without the condition. Women with ME/CFS reported more gynecologic problems and irregular menstrual cycles, and researchers found signs suggesting ovarian dysfunction—such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)—occurred more often in the ME/CFS group. The authors propose that hormonal imbalances affecting egg release may contribute to ME/CFS by reducing protective immune effects from certain hormones.

This study looked at whether certain antibodies (proteins the immune system makes) are found more often in people with sudden or progressive hearing loss. Researchers found that about half of hearing loss patients had antibodies against phospholipids and about half to two-thirds had antibodies against serotonin and gangliosides. Interestingly, some patients with hearing loss also had symptoms of ME/CFS and fibromyalgia, suggesting these conditions may be connected through shared immune system abnormalities.

Researchers found that ME/CFS patients and Addison's disease patients organize their illness experiences differently—what matters most to one group may not matter as much to the other. For ME/CFS patients, the key factors were how manageable the disease feels, how serious it is, whether they feel personally responsible, and whether they see external causes as responsible.

Researchers examined muscle samples from 105 ME/CFS patients to understand why they have abnormal responses to exercise, particularly high lactate levels. They found that patients with high lactate responses had fewer type 1 muscle fibres (which are energy-efficient), but this wasn't because they were inactive—it appeared to be a specific muscle problem related to ME/CFS itself.

Many people with ME/CFS experience nasal congestion and rhinitis symptoms, but don't test positive for allergies. This study analyzed nasal fluid from ME/CFS patients and compared it to people with allergies, cystic fibrosis, and healthy controls to understand what might be causing these symptoms. The researchers found that ME/CFS patients' nasal fluid looked similar to healthy controls, suggesting that the constant baseline secretion processes in the nose are not abnormal in ME/CFS.

Researchers asked people about their symptoms when they started taking supplements and again nine months later. The people taking supplements reported significant improvement in their symptoms, with continued progress over the nine-month period.

This study looked at insurance records from nearly 1,700 people who started taking antidepressants for depression in the early 1990s. The researchers wanted to understand whether treating depression could also reduce overall healthcare costs. They found that patients with certain conditions—including chronic fatigue syndrome, anxiety, heart disease, and cancer—who stayed on antidepressants for at least 6 months tended to have lower medical bills overall.

They found that healthy people used two different types of energy pathways during exercise, while people with ME/CFS showed unusual resting energy levels but normal recovery after exercise—unlike patients with genetic metabolic disorders, whose muscles recovered very slowly.

Researchers used home sleep monitoring equipment to measure sleep quality in 18 teenagers with ME/CFS compared to healthy teens of the same age and gender. They found that teenagers with ME/CFS woke up much more frequently during the night—both for brief moments and longer periods—compared to the healthy group. These frequent sleep disruptions could help explain why young people with ME/CFS feel so exhausted during the day.

Attention and verbal learning in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested thinking and memory skills in 20 people with ME/CFS and compared them to 22 healthy people. The researchers found that people with ME/CFS had difficulty with attention tasks that required handling multiple pieces of information at once, and they performed worse on remembering spoken information. However, their ability to focus on a single thing while ignoring distractions appeared to work normally.

Researchers surveyed over 1,500 people to understand how severe fatigue and related symptoms cluster together. They found that when fatigue lasts 6 months or longer, it tends to occur alongside three groups of symptoms: mood and thinking problems, flu-like symptoms, and vision problems. This pattern of symptoms matches what doctors use to diagnose ME/CFS, suggesting these conditions share common features.

Medical evaluation of Persian Gulf veterans with fatigue and/or chemical sensitivity.

This study looked at 72 Gulf War veterans who reported severe fatigue and/or chemical sensitivity to see if they had ME/CFS or multiple chemical sensitivity. The researchers found that 33 veterans met the criteria for ME/CFS, and compared them to 95 non-veterans who also had ME/CFS. Interestingly, the veterans' ME/CFS appeared to be milder than the civilians' version, based on symptom severity, activity levels, and ability to work.

Relation between neuropsychological impairment and functional disability in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Importantly, this connection held true even when accounting for depression, suggesting the cognitive problems themselves—not just mood—contribute to disability.

The low dose ACTH test in chronic fatigue syndrome and in health.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have a subtle problem with their stress hormone system, specifically the pituitary gland's ability to signal the adrenal glands to release cortisol. Using a sensitive test with a very small dose of ACTH (a hormone that triggers cortisol release), researchers found that people with ME/CFS showed a weaker cortisol response than healthy people, suggesting their adrenal system may not be functioning optimally.

This study tested whether thoughts, behaviors, and emotions affect how severe fatigue becomes and stays in ME/CFS patients. Researchers found that when patients believe their symptoms are purely physical, they tend to be less active, which makes fatigue worse. They also found that how much control patients felt they had over symptoms and how much they focused on body sensations directly affected fatigue levels. Importantly, the patterns that explained fatigue in ME/CFS were different from those in MS patients.

[Risk factors for ischemic heart disease in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome].

This study compared heart disease risk factors between people with ME/CFS and healthy controls. Researchers found that despite ME/CFS patients exercising less overall, they had no higher risk for heart disease than the control group. This suggests that reduced exercise activity in ME/CFS does not appear to increase cardiovascular risk in the way it might in other conditions.
