Anxiety in children and adolescents with chronic physical illnesses: a meta-analysis.
Pinquart, Martin, Shen, Yuhui·Acta paediatrica (Oslo, Norway : 1992)·2011
A large review of 332 studies found that children with chronic illnesses reported higher levels of anxiety compared to healthy peers, with an average difference of 0.18 standard deviation units. Children with chronic fatigue syndrome, migraine, hearing or vision problems, and epilepsy showed the strongest associations with elevated anxiety. However, this review combined results from many different studies using varying methods, so the strength of these associations may differ depending on how each study measured anxiety and illness.
