This study looked at the deepest, most restorative type of sleep in people with ME/CFS and primary insomnia to understand why both groups feel tired and don't feel rested despite sleeping. Researchers used special brain wave measurements during sleep and found that both groups had unusual patterns of very slow brain waves during deep sleep, even though they were getting normal or sometimes even extra amounts of deep sleep. The findings suggest that the problem may not be getting enough deep sleep, but rather that the quality or type of brain activity during that sleep is different.

Researchers tested 564 fibromyalgia patients for specific genetic markers and then checked their findings in a second group of 397 patients. They found that people carrying a particular genetic variant had lower chances of developing sicca syndrome alongside their fibromyalgia.

This study used brain imaging to compare how the brains of breast cancer survivors with fatigue differ from those without fatigue. Researchers found that people experiencing persistent cancer-related fatigue showed different patterns of communication between brain regions, particularly involving areas linked to thinking about oneself and regulating sleep. These brain connectivity differences were associated with worse physical fatigue and poor sleep quality.

Comorbid personality disorders in chronic fatigue syndrome patients: a marker of psychopathological severity.

Patients with these personality traits also reported more depression, irritability, and guilt.

The study found that the two groups were nearly identical in most disease markers and how they recovered over time, suggesting the criteria may not be capturing important real-world differences between patients.

This study tested how automatically women with ME/CFS can walk while doing other things at the same time. Researchers asked women with ME/CFS and healthy women to walk, close their eyes, and solve a math problem. Most women with ME/CFS stopped walking when they had to do the math problem with their eyes closed, while most healthy women kept walking. This suggests that walking requires more conscious effort and attention in ME/CFS patients than in healthy people.

This study tested whether a natural plant extract called Robuvit (made from oak wood) might help people with ME/CFS who had signs of increased oxidative stress—a type of cellular damage. Thirty-eight people with ME/CFS took Robuvit supplements for 6 months while also following a structured lifestyle plan (better sleep, exercise, diet, and relaxation), and they were compared to 42 similar people who followed the plan without the supplement. The group taking Robuvit reported more improvement in fatigue symptoms and had lower markers of oxidative stress in their blood.

Women with ME/CFS performed significantly worse than healthy women and even worse than older women with osteoporosis, suggesting a specific weakness pattern in ME/CFS. This finding could help guide rehabilitation programs that focus on movement quality rather than just building strength.

The Process of Change in Pain During Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Researchers tested milk samples from 316 dairy farms in Indiana to see how common a bacterium called Coxiella burnetii is in cattle herds. This bacterium causes Q fever, which can lead to chronic fatigue in people. They found that over 61% of Indiana dairy herds had evidence of this bacterium in their milk, suggesting it is widespread among cattle.

Frequency of Migraine Headaches in Patients With Fibromyalgia.

This study examined how often people with fibromyalgia experience migraine headaches. Researchers surveyed over 1,700 fibromyalgia patients and found that about 56% met the criteria for migraines. People with both conditions were more likely to also have depression, anxiety, IBS, and chronic fatigue syndrome, suggesting these overlapping conditions increase overall burden on patients.

Researchers collected stool and blood samples from 10 ME/CFS patients and 10 healthy controls before and after an intense exercise test. They found that after exercise, ME/CFS patients showed unusual changes in their gut bacteria and had more bacterial DNA circulating in their blood 72 hours later—something that didn't happen in healthy people.

The Self beyond Somatic Symptoms: A Narrative Approach to Self-Experience in Adolescent Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The findings suggest that ME/CFS deeply affects not just the body, but how young people see and value themselves.
