Secretion of growth hormone in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at growth hormone levels in people with ME/CFS, because low growth hormone has been seen in related conditions like fibromyalgia. Researchers tested 20 ME/CFS patients and compared them to healthy controls, measuring growth hormone in different ways. They found that ME/CFS patients had lower levels of a growth hormone marker (IGF-I) and tended to produce less growth hormone at night, though other growth hormone tests were similar between groups.

Researchers found that ME/CFS patients and Addison's disease patients organize their illness experiences differently—what matters most to one group may not matter as much to the other. For ME/CFS patients, the key factors were how manageable the disease feels, how serious it is, whether they feel personally responsible, and whether they see external causes as responsible.

Researchers followed people with chronic fatigue for 2.5 years to see what changes were linked to getting better. They found that improvements in mood, reduction in psychiatric symptoms, and disappearance of physical examination findings were connected to people feeling less fatigued, functioning better, and returning to work. People who either never had chronic fatigue syndrome or only had it at the start of the study showed the most improvement.

This study looked at how people with ME/CFS walk compared to healthy people. Researchers used specialized movement analysis tools to measure walking patterns in 12 patients and found clear differences in how smoothly and symmetrically they walked. Interestingly, these walking problems appeared right from the start of walking, not after fatigue set in, suggesting the issue may be related to how the brain controls movement rather than muscle tiredness.

This study tested whether a comprehensive treatment program combining medical care, psychiatric treatment, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (talk therapy focusing on thoughts and behaviors) could help people with ME/CFS. Fifty-one patients received this treatment, which included supervised exercise, sleep strategies, activity planning, and therapy. The results showed that about 61% returned to work or functioned at a work-like level, while 33 months later, those who completed treatment maintained their improvements, whereas untreated patients rarely improved.

Sleep abnormalities demonstrated by home polysomnography in teenagers with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Researchers used home sleep monitoring equipment to measure sleep quality in 18 teenagers with ME/CFS compared to healthy teens of the same age and gender. They found that teenagers with ME/CFS woke up much more frequently during the night—both for brief moments and longer periods—compared to the healthy group. These frequent sleep disruptions could help explain why young people with ME/CFS feel so exhausted during the day.

Medical evaluation of Persian Gulf veterans with fatigue and/or chemical sensitivity.

This study looked at 72 Gulf War veterans who reported severe fatigue and/or chemical sensitivity to see if they had ME/CFS or multiple chemical sensitivity. The researchers found that 33 veterans met the criteria for ME/CFS, and compared them to 95 non-veterans who also had ME/CFS. Interestingly, the veterans' ME/CFS appeared to be milder than the civilians' version, based on symptom severity, activity levels, and ability to work.

The relationship between temporomandibular disorders and stress-associated syndromes.

This study looked at how often jaw joint problems (temporomandibular disorder) occur together with ME/CFS and fibromyalgia. Researchers found that 42% of patients with these conditions also had jaw problems, and most of these patients had developed their general symptoms before their jaw pain started. Interestingly, most were treated only for the jaw problem with bite splints, even though they had multiple related conditions.

They found that when fatigue lasts 6 months or longer, it tends to occur alongside three groups of symptoms: mood and thinking problems, flu-like symptoms, and vision problems. This pattern of symptoms matches what doctors use to diagnose ME/CFS, suggesting these conditions share common features.

However, these findings did not fully explain why ME/CFS patients experience fatigue and problems with exercise.

The researchers found that when given naloxone, ME/CFS patients had a blunted response in one stress hormone (ACTH) compared to healthy controls, suggesting that excess opioids are not the primary cause of the stress hormone problems seen in ME/CFS.

This study looked at whether women with chemical sensitivity (difficulty tolerating everyday chemicals) had experienced more childhood stress or difficult relationships with their fathers compared to women with depression alone or women without these conditions. The researchers found that women with chemical sensitivity had weaker relationships with their fathers and showed signs of nervous system overactivity. The study suggests that repeated exposure to stress early in life might train the nervous system to react more strongly to chemicals and other triggers.

Researchers asked 110 ME/CFS patients about their symptoms in summer and winter, and found that about one-third showed a seasonal pattern with winter worsening. This suggests that some ME/CFS patients might benefit from light therapy, a treatment commonly used for seasonal depression.

Phosphate diabetes in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study explored whether some ME/CFS patients might actually have a rare kidney condition called phosphate diabetes, which prevents the kidneys from properly reabsorbing phosphate. Phosphate is important for muscle and nerve function, and low levels can cause fatigue, muscle pain, and depression—symptoms that overlap with ME/CFS. The researchers tested 87 ME/CFS patients and found that 9 of them also had phosphate diabetes.

Researchers followed 44 patients who had been treated for a tick-borne brain infection caused by Borrelia bacteria. Even though the patients' neurological symptoms improved after antibiotics, more than half continued to experience ongoing fatigue and other non-specific symptoms similar to chronic fatigue syndrome years later. Some patients also continued to show signs of Borrelia infection in their blood tests.

Chronic fatigue syndrome in psychiatric patients: lifetime and premorbid personal history of physical health.

This study compared 46 ME/CFS patients with two groups of psychiatric patients without ME/CFS to see if there were differences in their past physical health histories. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients reported more lifetime infections (including repeated mono-like illnesses), irritable bowel syndrome, and allergies before developing ME/CFS than the comparison groups. This suggests that a pattern of poor overall physical health earlier in life may play a role in developing ME/CFS.

This study compared how people with Parkinson's disease and ME/CFS cope with the challenges their illnesses create and how this affects their quality of life. Researchers found that while both groups face similar types of challenges (like managing symptoms and adjusting daily life), the way these challenges affect quality of life differs between the two diseases. For people with ME/CFS, how patients think about and evaluate their illness challenges was more important in predicting their quality of life than the actual severity of their symptoms.

Physical activity before and after exercise in women with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tracked the physical activity of 20 women with ME/CFS and 20 healthy volunteers for two weeks using a movement monitor worn at the waist. After all participants did a strenuous treadmill exercise test, researchers measured how their activity changed. Women with ME/CFS showed a noticeable drop in activity levels after the exercise, with the biggest decrease happening around days 12-14, and they took more rest breaks during the day.

Reproductive correlates of chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study compared reproductive and menstrual histories in women with ME/CFS to healthy women without the condition. Women with ME/CFS reported more gynecologic problems and irregular menstrual cycles, and researchers found signs suggesting ovarian dysfunction—such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)—occurred more often in the ME/CFS group. The authors propose that hormonal imbalances affecting egg release may contribute to ME/CFS by reducing protective immune effects from certain hormones.
