This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have reduced oxygen processing ability compared to healthy people. Researchers had 33 ME/CFS patients and 33 matched healthy controls perform exercise tests on stationary bikes while measuring heart rate and oxygen use. The results showed that ME/CFS patients had normal oxygen uptake capacity similar to sedentary healthy people of the same age and gender, contrary to what some earlier studies had reported.

The study suggests that increased attention to the body may be partly responsible for the cognitive slowing that people with ME/CFS experience.

When asked directly, people with ME/CFS reported lower self-esteem than healthy people and those with other chronic illnesses. Researchers followed up with people from a large community study to see which factors predict whether chronic fatigue gets better or worse over time. Hemodynamic and neurohumoral responses to head-up tilt in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether ME/CFS patients have problems with blood pressure and heart rate control when standing up or tilting upright. About 28% of ME/CFS patients had abnormal responses (like fainting symptoms or rapid heart rate), compared to 17% of healthy controls, though this difference was not statistically significant.

The findings showed that on actual cognitive tests, people with ME/CFS performed just as well as healthy controls, though they reported feeling that their thinking was worse.

The results suggest this questionnaire might be useful for screening young people who could develop ME/CFS-like conditions.

Researchers tested blood samples from ME/CFS patients and healthy controls for specific antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV), a common virus. They found that 16 ME/CFS patients had unique antibodies to two CMV proteins (p52 and CM2) that were not found in 77 control subjects, including other ME/CFS patients and healthy people. This suggests these antibodies might be a specific marker for a subset of ME/CFS patients and could indicate an ongoing or incomplete CMV infection in this group.

Intraindividual variability in cognitive performance in persons with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested how well 14 people with ME/CFS and 16 healthy people could perform thinking tasks over 10 weeks. While the ME/CFS group completed tasks more slowly, they were just as accurate. The key finding was that people with ME/CFS showed much more inconsistency in their performance from week to week—sometimes doing better, sometimes worse—even when doing the same type of task.

The effect of exercise on gait and balance in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether people with ME/CFS have problems with walking and balance, and whether light exercise makes these problems worse. Researchers compared 11 ME/CFS patients with 11 healthy people and found that while ME/CFS patients did show different walking patterns, their balance was similar to healthy controls, and the exercise test did not worsen either group's balance or gait.

Patients' perceptions of medical care in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study asked 68 ME/CFS patients about their experiences with medical care. Two-thirds of patients were unhappy with the care they received. Patients felt most satisfied when doctors listened, showed genuine interest, and communicated clearly—not necessarily when doctors could cure the illness. Patients were most frustrated when doctors were dismissive, confused about ME/CFS, or gave conflicting advice.

Discriminating between chronic fatigue syndrome and depression: a cognitive analysis.

This study compared how people with ME/CFS think and feel about their illness compared to people with depression and healthy people. The researchers found that people with ME/CFS and people with depression have different thought patterns: people with depression tend to blame themselves and doubt their worth, while people with ME/CFS focus on their physical symptoms, see themselves as sick, and tend to rest more to manage their condition. These different thinking patterns stayed consistent over 6 months and were linked to how much disability and fatigue people experienced.

A twin study of chronic fatigue.

This study looked at whether chronic fatigue runs in families by comparing identical twins to fraternal twins. Researchers found that identical twins were more likely to both have chronic fatigue than fraternal twins, suggesting that genes play a role in who develops the condition. The findings suggest that genetics may account for about half of the reason some people develop chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether oxidative stress—a type of cellular damage—might contribute to ME/CFS. Researchers compared 33 people with ME/CFS to 28 people with similar symptoms who didn't meet ME/CFS criteria. They found that people with ME/CFS had higher levels of fat damage in their blood particles and lower levels of a protective protein called transferrin, suggesting their bodies may be more vulnerable to oxidative damage.
