[Relationship between fatigue in multiple sclerosis and the chronic fatigue syndrome].

Chronic fatigue syndrome: an examination of the phases.

This study tested a tool called the Fennell Phase Inventory, which measures four distinct phases that people with ME/CFS typically go through: Crisis, Stabilization, Resolution, and Integration. Researchers gave 65 patients diagnosed by doctors the inventory along with other questionnaires about their symptoms, daily functioning, and coping strategies. The results supported the theory that ME/CFS patients progress through these predictable phases, with each phase showing different levels of disability and different ways of coping.

Use of alternative treatments by chronic fatigue syndrome discordant twins.

This study looked at how often people with ME/CFS use alternative treatments compared to their identical twins who don't have the illness. Researchers surveyed 63 twin pairs and found that 91% of people with ME/CFS had tried at least one alternative therapy (such as herbs, vitamins, massage, or meditation), compared to 71% of their healthy twins. While many people found these treatments helpful, most didn't tell their doctors they were using them.

They found that people with ME/CFS differed significantly from each other in how sick they were, when their illness started, and whether a stressful event triggered it.

Antibodies to parvovirus B19 non-structural protein are associated with chronic but not acute arthritis following B19 infection.

This study tracked people who had parvovirus B19 infection to see if certain antibodies (immune proteins) in their blood were linked to lasting joint pain and arthritis. Researchers found that antibodies to a specific viral protein called NS1 were more common in people who developed chronic arthritis months or years after the infection, but were not associated with arthritis during the acute illness itself.

This study looked at 100 people in Hong Kong who had severe tiredness lasting at least 6 months to understand how common mental health conditions like depression and anxiety were in this group. Researchers found that over half of these patients had experienced depression or anxiety at some point in their lives, and about a quarter had these conditions at the time of the study. Interestingly, patients' main complaints were often pain, sleep problems, and worry—not just fatigue—and most believed their illness started from stressful life events.

Human herpesviruses 6 and 7 in chronic fatigue syndrome: a case-control study.

Researchers tested whether three common viruses (HHV-6A, HHV-6B, and HHV-7) might be linked to ME/CFS. They compared blood samples from 26 ME/CFS patients with 52 healthy people and looked for signs of active or dormant virus infection. The study found no meaningful differences between the two groups, suggesting these particular viruses are not associated with ME/CFS.

Salivary gland changes in chronic fatigue syndrome: a case-controlled preliminary histologic study.

Researchers examined tiny salivary glands in the lips of 11 ME/CFS patients and compared them to healthy controls. They found that ME/CFS patients had various changes in these glands, including swelling, scarring, and immune cell infiltration. Most notably, ME/CFS patients had significantly more mast cells (immune cells) in their salivary glands than controls, suggesting these glands may be damaged in ME/CFS.

Strength and physiological response to exercise in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study compared muscle strength and exercise capacity in people with ME/CFS to healthy sedentary people and people with depression. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients were weaker and could not exercise as long, even though they were as physically deconditioned as the sedentary controls. After exercise therapy, patients improved—mainly by having lower heart rate responses during activity—suggesting that rebuilding physical fitness can help restore function.

The genetic aetiology of somatic distress.

This study looked at whether the physical and mental exhaustion seen in chronic fatigue syndrome runs in families and whether it's genetically distinct from depression and anxiety. Researchers surveyed nearly 3,500 Australian twins and found that about one-third of the genetic factors affecting somatic distress (physical symptoms and fatigue) are unique to those symptoms and not shared with depression or anxiety, suggesting these are separate conditions with different causes.

The course of severe chronic fatigue syndrome in childhood.

This study followed 25 children with severe chronic fatigue syndrome for about 3.5 years after their illness began. Most children (two-thirds) eventually recovered and returned to normal activities, though the illness caused serious problems during its worst phases, including extended time out of school. The researchers found that children who had a clear physical trigger for their illness, started feeling sick in the autumn, or came from higher-income families were more likely to recover.

This study surveyed Australian doctors about what they think and do regarding ME/CFS. Most doctors who diagnose ME/CFS agreed on six key symptoms, including long-lasting fatigue that doesn't improve with rest and exhaustion after minor activity. However, nearly one-third of doctors didn't believe ME/CFS was a real condition and thought depression was the actual cause instead.

This study looked at whether depression makes ME/CFS symptoms worse. Researchers compared three groups: ME/CFS patients without depression, ME/CFS patients with depression, and people with depression alone. This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have lower levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) or weaker adrenal gland responses compared to healthy people. Researchers gave small doses of a hormone called Synacthen to 20 ME/CFS patients and 20 healthy controls, then measured cortisol levels over an hour. They found no significant differences between the two groups, suggesting that reduced adrenal reserve may not explain ME/CFS symptoms.

Absence of evidence of Borna disease virus infection in Swedish patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Researchers tested whether a virus called Borna disease virus (BDV) might be causing ME/CFS in Swedish patients. They examined blood samples from 169 patients and 62 healthy controls using two different detection methods—one looking for antibodies (immune system markers) and another looking for viral genetic material. They found no evidence of BDV in any of the patient samples, suggesting this particular virus is not responsible for ME/CFS.

Chronic fatigue syndrome in private practice psychiatry: family history of physical and mental health.

This study looked at 45 psychiatric patients with ME/CFS and compared their family medical histories to two similar groups of psychiatric patients without ME/CFS. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients' parents tended to die younger and had more cancer, autoimmune disorders, and ME/CFS-like illnesses compared to the families of control patients. There were no significant differences in mental health conditions between the families.

Personality and social attitudes in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study compared personality traits and attitudes between people with ME/CFS and people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to see if ME/CFS patients have distinctive personality characteristics. Researchers found that ME/CFS patients and RA patients were actually quite similar in most personality measures, and the common stereotype that ME/CFS patients are perfectionists with negative views about psychiatry was not supported.

Vitamin B status in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS have lower levels of three B vitamins (B6, B2, and B1) compared to healthy people. Researchers measured how well these vitamins work in red blood cells from 12 ME/CFS patients and 18 healthy controls. They found that all three B vitamins appeared to be functioning less effectively in ME/CFS patients, suggesting a possible vitamin deficiency that might contribute to symptoms.
