A Disease Register for ME/CFS: Report of a Pilot Study.

Researchers created a disease register (a database) to identify and track people with ME/CFS in a fair and systematic way. They searched GP records in three regions of England and found 510 patients with unexplained chronic fatigue, of which 160 agreed to join the register. By following these patients over time, researchers can better understand how ME/CFS progresses and use this group for future studies.

They found that ME/CFS was responsible for about 1 in 100 cases of unexplained school absence. Students identified through this school-based approach were less severely ill than those who went to specialist clinics through typical healthcare pathways, and many improved quickly once they received appropriate care.

Premorbid risk markers for chronic fatigue syndrome in the 1958 British birth cohort.

This study followed over 11,000 British children from birth until age 42 to identify early warning signs of ME/CFS. Researchers found that people who experienced physical abuse from parents, had frequent stomach problems as children, or caught many colds were more likely to develop ME/CFS later in life. The study also confirmed that mood and mental health problems occurring before ME/CFS developed played an important role in the condition's development.

This study followed over 11,000 people born in 1958 in Britain to see whether emotional or mental health problems, and physical activity levels before they got sick, were connected to developing ME/CFS later in life. Researchers found that people who had psychological difficulties in their twenties and thirties were more likely to later develop ME/CFS, but childhood emotional problems or exercise habits didn't show this connection.

Characteristics of chronic fatigue syndrome in a Japanese community population : chronic fatigue syndrome in Japan.

This Japanese study looked at how many people have ME/CFS in the general population and what their daily habits are like. Researchers found that about 1 in 100 people in Japan have ME/CFS, and people with the condition slept significantly less (about 5.5 hours per night) compared to people without it (about 6.3 hours). The symptom of unrefreshing sleep was particularly useful for identifying who has ME/CFS.

Researchers found that ME/CFS patients had significantly higher levels of plasma peroxides—harmful molecules that damage cells. These findings suggest that oxidative stress may play a role in ME/CFS, which could help explain some of the illness's symptoms.

Researchers tested whether a virus called XMRV was present in people with ME/CFS by comparing identical twins where one had the illness and one didn't. They found no evidence of XMRV in any of the people with ME/CFS, suggesting this virus is not likely a cause of the disease.

Thirty-two CFS patients received 20 days of Tuina treatment, and researchers found that the treatment reduced fatigue symptoms on a standard questionnaire, though the electrical patterns in muscles did not change noticeably.

This study compared how fatigue and sleepiness affect thinking and memory. Researchers tested 15 people with ME/CFS, 15 people with sleep apnea, and 16 healthy controls using memory tests, attention tasks, and brain wave measurements. Both patient groups showed cognitive problems, though people with sleep apnea had slightly more difficulty with certain thinking tasks and movement speed.

Researchers tested whether a virus called XMRV, which had been proposed as a possible cause of ME/CFS, was present in HIV-positive patients who developed lymphoma (a type of cancer). They checked blood samples from 26 patients using three different detection methods, but did not find any evidence of XMRV. This suggests that XMRV is not associated with lymphomas that develop in people with HIV.

This suggests the virus is either not present or extremely rare in the population studied.

Assessment of a 44 gene classifier for the evaluation of chronic fatigue syndrome from peripheral blood mononuclear cell gene expression.

Researchers tested whether 44 genes could be used together to diagnose ME/CFS by measuring their activity in blood samples from patients and healthy people. While the combination of genes worked well when tested on the original group, it failed when applied to a new group of patients, correctly identifying only about two-thirds of cases. This suggests that a simple blood test using these genes is not yet ready for diagnosing ME/CFS in everyday medical practice.

Researchers found that both patient groups had more difficulty tolerating emotional distress, tended to suppress their own needs for others, and held more negative beliefs about experiencing and expressing emotions. These emotional processing difficulties may play a role in how these illnesses develop and persist.

Long-term sickness absence among patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at ME/CFS patients who were on long-term sick leave from work and compared them to those still working. Patients taking sick leave had more severe physical fatigue and sleep problems than other patients. Interestingly, those on sick leave also tended to avoid situations they found embarrassing and rested more often as a coping strategy. The researchers suggest that helping patients manage embarrassment-related thoughts and avoidance behaviors might help them return to work.

Cognitive behavioural treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome in a rehabilitation setting: effectiveness and predictors of outcome.

This study tested whether combining cognitive behavioural therapy (a type of talking therapy that addresses thought patterns and behaviours) with graded exercise therapy (gradually increasing physical activity) helps people with ME/CFS. About one-third of patients experienced meaningful improvement in fatigue and physical function. The study found that patients who were more physically active before treatment, felt more in control of their symptoms, and had been unwell for a shorter time tended to do better.

A brain MRI study of chronic fatigue syndrome: evidence of brainstem dysfunction and altered homeostasis.

This study used specialized brain imaging (MRI) to compare 25 people with ME/CFS to 25 healthy controls, looking at brain structure and how it related to fatigue severity and other symptoms. Researchers found that people with ME/CFS showed differences in brainstem volume (a critical part of the brain controlling basic functions) that correlated with how long fatigue had lasted, and unusual patterns in how blood pressure related to brainstem structure. These findings suggest ME/CFS may involve damage to a specific brain region that disrupts the body's automatic control systems.
