Researchers tested whether a virus called XMRV might be causing various childhood illnesses and respiratory diseases. They checked samples from 151 children and adults with different conditions, but found no evidence that XMRV was present in any of them. Comorbid health conditions in women with syncope.

This study looked at hospital records of over 305,000 patients admitted for fainting (syncope) to see which health conditions were more common in women versus men. Researchers found that women were more likely to have several conditions related to nervous system problems that control blood pressure and heart rate, including chronic fatigue syndrome, migraines, and postural tachycardia syndrome (a condition where heart rate increases abnormally when standing). These autonomic conditions were especially common in women of reproductive age.

Treatment of the narcoleptiform sleep disorder in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia with sodium oxybate.

Researchers looked at 118 patients with ME/CFS or fibromyalgia who had sleep problems similar to narcolepsy. When these patients were treated with a medication called sodium oxybate, 75% reported significant improvement in fatigue and 60% reported significant improvement in pain. This suggests that fixing the underlying sleep disorder might help relieve both conditions.

Classification of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome by types of fatigue.

Researchers used a questionnaire to measure five different types of fatigue and found that patients naturally fell into distinct groups based on their fatigue patterns. Researchers measured a hormone called alpha-MSH in the blood of 55 ME/CFS patients and compared it to 30 healthy people. They found that patients diagnosed within the last 5 years had significantly higher alpha-MSH levels than healthy controls, but this difference disappeared in patients who had been ill longer. This suggests alpha-MSH might be a useful blood test for identifying ME/CFS in newly diagnosed patients.

This study tested whether people with ME/CFS feel pain more intensely than healthy people, even in areas where they don't typically experience pain. Researchers measured how much pressure patients and healthy volunteers could tolerate before feeling pain. They found that ME/CFS patients with chronic pain had significantly lower pain thresholds everywhere on their body, suggesting their nervous system may be in a heightened state of sensitivity.

Fatigue status in relation to lifestyle in healthy Japanese adolescents.

This study looked at fatigue in over 1,200 healthy Japanese teenagers aged 11–16 to see how common different types of fatigue were and whether lifestyle habits made a difference. Researchers found that girls reported higher fatigue scores related to ME/CFS-type symptoms than boys, and fatigue increased as teenagers got older. Sleep, exercise, diet quality, and sugary drinks were all linked to how tired teenagers felt.

Researchers used blood tests and antibody checks on over 400 participants and found no evidence that XMRV is linked to autism. Researchers used a specialized brain-wave test (EEG) to compare 61 women with ME/CFS to 80 healthy women. The brain activity patterns were different between the two groups, especially when the women were doing mental tasks. This study looked at 128 patients with ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, or multiple chemical sensitivity seen at a Toronto clinic to understand how much these illnesses affect daily life. Compared to healthy Canadians, these patients had significantly lower ability to work, care for themselves, and function in their homes—with 69% having stopped working an average of 3 years after becoming ill. The study found that having fibromyalgia, becoming ill at a younger age, and lower income were linked to worse functional outcomes.

Psychiatric misdiagnoses in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

This study looked at whether doctors in ME/CFS clinics were accurately diagnosing psychiatric conditions like depression and anxiety in their ME/CFS patients. Researchers compared diagnoses made by clinic doctors with diagnoses made using a standardized psychiatric interview on 135 patients. They found that doctors missed psychiatric diagnoses in about 22% of patients, but incorrectly diagnosed them in only 10%—meaning missed diagnoses were more than twice as common as false diagnoses.

This study followed young people aged 12-18 who had glandular fever to see what happened after infection. Most recovered normally, but 39 developed ME/CFS. Compared to those who recovered, young people with ME/CFS reported feeling less confident in their abilities, had more difficulty with physical activities, and experienced worse overall health—affecting school, friendships, and emotional wellbeing.

Personality and perfectionism in chronic fatigue syndrome: a closer look.

This study compared personality traits in 27 women with ME/CFS to 30 healthy women. People with ME/CFS scored higher on neuroticism (tendency to experience negative emotions) and unhealthy perfectionism (setting unrealistic standards and being self-critical). Interestingly, the combination of these traits appeared to be particularly problematic in the fatigued group, suggesting that personality patterns that might seem positive in healthy people can sometimes be harmful when someone has ME/CFS.

Antibody to parvovirus B19 nonstructural protein is associated with chronic arthralgia in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis.

This study looked at whether parvovirus B19 (a common virus) plays a role in ME/CFS, particularly in patients with joint pain. While ME/CFS patients and healthy people had similar rates of past B19 infection, researchers found that ME/CFS patients were much more likely to have specific antibodies suggesting the virus wasn't being cleared properly from their body. Interestingly, patients with these antibodies were more likely to report chronic joint pain.

Fibromyalgia and related conditions: electromyogram profile during isometric muscle contraction.

This study measured how muscles work during sustained effort by recording electrical signals from shoulder muscles in people with fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, depression, and healthy controls. People with fibromyalgia stopped their muscle contraction much earlier than others and showed a distinctive electrical pattern suggesting their muscles gave up prematurely. Importantly, ME/CFS patients showed muscle patterns very similar to healthy people, not the abnormal pattern seen in fibromyalgia.

Researchers in the Netherlands tested whether a virus called XMRV, which had been reported in ME/CFS patients in other studies, was present in blood samples from Dutch ME/CFS patients. Using sensitive laboratory tests, they found no trace of this virus in any of the patients or healthy control participants. This challenges earlier claims that XMRV might be connected to ME/CFS.

Reduced heart rate variability predicts poor sleep quality in a case-control study of chronic fatigue syndrome.

People with ME/CFS often report poor sleep quality. This study measured heart rate patterns during sleep in 20 patients with ME/CFS and 20 healthy controls, finding that ME/CFS patients had much lower heart rate variability (natural changes in heart rate) during sleep. The researchers concluded that this reduced variability—suggesting the nervous system stays "on high alert" even at night—is closely linked to their sleep problems.

Phenotypes of chronic fatigue syndrome in children and young people.

Researchers studied 333 children and young people with ME/CFS to see if the illness presents differently in different people. They found three main patterns: one involving muscle and joint pain, another involving migraine-like symptoms with sensitivity to light and sound, and a third involving sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. These different patterns were linked to varying levels of severity, suggesting that ME/CFS affects children in different ways.

A national cross-sectional survey of diagnosed sufferers of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome: pathways to diagnosis, changes in quality of life and service priorities.

This study surveyed 211 people in Ireland with a diagnosed ME/CFS to understand their journey to diagnosis and how the illness affected their lives. On average, people visited 4-5 different healthcare services before being diagnosed, and it took nearly 4 years to get a diagnosis (though some waited much longer). Patients reported that their quality of life got significantly worse after developing ME/CFS, and they strongly asked for doctors to have better training and understanding of the condition.
